Should Butch issue statement?

Looking solely at win % over short periods of time (less than 3 years, say) is shoddy homework, unless you throw in some trend analysis to fill it out.

Okay, so in purely percentage terms, Butch is poised to pass Kiffin by the end of the year (21-17 = 55%). That would put him smack dab in the middle of that list.

But trend analysis says even more: 5 wins ... 7 wins ... 9 wins ... (slope = +2 wins/year). that's a trend that has no top end, and is a pretty healthy rate of climb.

Compare that to Bill Battle's trend line: 11 ... 10 ... 10 ... 8 ... 7 ... 7 ... 6 (slope = -1 win/year).

Or to Johnny Majors: 4 ... 5 ... 7 ... 5 ... 8 ... 6 ... 9 ... 7 (slope = +0.5 win/year).

Butch looking healthy to me. Not sure I'd join GlockVol (yet) in saying Butch is one of the two best coaches we've had in the past 45 years, but he has a WHOLE lot more promise than you're giving him credit for. Assuming he wins out, of course.

JP you're not feeding the hate so you are wrong.... beside that you can't use ideas like trending and slope analysis with some on these pages. Unless of course it feeds their agenda.

No. Hart should NOT offer Butch more money.

If Butch wants to go somewhere else....he should go.

We are Tennessee. We were Tennessee before Butch and will be Tennessee after Butch.

Butch has not proven himself to be worth more than he is currently making.

If...and that's a BIG if....he get's to 9 this year....give him a small raise since it would be the first time we have won 9 or more since Phil was here.

8 wins DOES NOT get you a raise at Tennessee.

If he would rather go to VT....I'm sure we could get a crew of folks together to help him pack.

This. Exactly THIS.

I doubt Butch is going anywhere. But, giving him a raise could also present an opportunity to renegotiate his buyout. I would trade a small raise for a significantly lower buyout if we need to fire him, and a higher buyout for him if he leaves on his own. His agent is probably just using this as a way to angle for a raise. Why not give it to him if we can improve our long term situation in the process? Going to the negotiating table is a chance to improve Tennessee's situation too. Just a thought.

If anyone thinks Butch wouldn't leave for a nice raise, they are smoking crack. Coaches are like everyone else...you are loyal to the company until you leave for a better job, more pay, better location, etc.

I live in Blacksburg. I work for virginia tech. Butchs name is not being mentioned up here on local sports radio. Everyone. Calm. Down.

What are you UP TO? :glare:

Its not all about money. I have turned down offers making 3-4x what I earn now and would not consider it but it is more about location and I have no interest in moving anywhere north of Tennessee.

I agree people generally go where the money is, but long term expectation should override short term gains.

With the talent coming back, injured players healing, and another year of progress wiyh player development, Tennessee is really set up to make national noise next year.

If Butch thinks he is a great coach, and I believe he does, then he knows the next few years could be a very special time for Tennessee football. He has a much greater chance to win a major SEC title and be mentioned in a NC discussion with some good wins. Add to that continued solid recruiting and he could have a great future here.

Go to VT, restart the process, ceiling is lower. ..will take much more to get to a NC at VT than here. One loss at VT and you are out. A one loss SEC school still has a great chance to play in the playoff.

They say coaches want to prove themselves at the highest level. That is the SEC in college football.

Only way I see he leaves us if he feels this is as good as he can do at UT, and he knows 7-8 wins will not be enough.

This thread is ridiculous......#1 Virginia Tech isn't near an attractive job....not even close. #2 they will never pay what we are paying for Butch #3 Butch has everything going in the right direction here and knows he can succeed in sustaining long term success.

Tennessee losing a head football coach to Virginia Tech will not happen in my lifetime. Unless you idiots start a petition to hire Bruce Pearl back and run Butch off. :lolabove:

LOL...what? You idiots? I think the idiot would be someone getting their panties in a bunch over an internet thread about a metaphorical coaching change. You think if Bruce Pearl came back, Butch would leave?

Absolutely no sense.

VA Tech, USC, USCjr, Miami, UGA, Hawaii, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland, UVA, Etc.

Lots of coaches going to be moving around, lots of attractive locations.

Yes, he should issue a statement rescinding the ridiculous, asinine statement last night about needing 6-7 years to rebuild the program.

1. VT wouldn't offer more than he currently gets 2. Plenty of coaches turn down more money. You don't think Saban was offered more by Texas, or Strong offered more $ by Tennessee?

Think about it.......if that is possible for you to do.

USC is arguably the top program in football.

Says who? They play in a weaker conference. UCLA, Oregon, AZ State, Utah, and Cal have all been on the rise and are getting top players from USC's territory. Georgia is in a much better state right now and honestly speaking, the recruits are better in the south. It's been a shame the amount of talent UGA always has and they just don't have the right coach to get them to the top like Saban has done at Bama.
