Shoop's Recruiting

Once...you might be able to call a mistake...maybe. Twice...Butch had no choice. Neither he nor the program needs this sort of thing.

True...but I was talking about Kiffin by "both".

Penn St. maybe, but the writing is on the wall for Franklin and UT's program is on a much better trajectory right now.

Agreed. I could've totally seen him at Penn State until the right HC position comes along, but under the circumstances (I.e. - a tool for a head coach and likely overall staff turmoil around the corner), the move to UT is far from lateral.

Even with my East Tennessean bias, our current D roster and him as coordinator seems like a dream sell to a recruit.

This. If he is offered a HC position then it means he has done really well here. This is a great hire and I only see him jumping for a HC job now.

Agreed. If he stays here two (2) years and we get to an SEC Champ game and playoffs during that time, then he's more than done his job and it won't be hard to hire the next one. You want your coaches to leave for HC jobs, it means you're actually winning (see Alabama).

Seems like we just had this conversation concerning Butch.

There are transitional programs, and destination programs. Unless you make the mistake of picking a douche like Lane Kiffin, Tennessee is a destination program.

Even guys who are looking to move up tend to stay longer at destination spots.

Shoop will get back to the head coaching ranks (he was last there at Columbia, where the Harvard-Yale game is considered a mega-match). And he might get back there after just one year at Tennessee. I'm thinking, though, that only happens if we win a championship this fall.

And that seems like a fair trade-off, getting the guy his boost back into HC ranks after him helping get us to the promised land.

He stayed with jimmy terrorist for four or five years.

I think he stays. I think he wasn't a big fan of jancek. It certainly wasn't because of playing time. He was getting solid playing time before his injury.

He was not the only player who did not particularly like CJJ. If he had of stayed there was a good possibility we would have lost maybe 3 players

Penn St fans are pretty butthurt about losing recruits, so I would imagine he has quite a bit of pull.

This is far and away the easiest school to recruit for he has been to, though.

I wonder if they were that indignant about recruits switching when Franklin came to Penn St. and blatantly poached Vanderbilt's entire recruiting class.

With 13 jobs in 26 years, Shoop probably won't be here when recruits are ready to play. I wonder how many potential recruits will recognize this.

Wow. Dude? He elevated to this level and your going to hate. How else did he get to this point? You want him to keep that job making $80k instead of $1.15mil.

Do you think Tyler Shoop will follow Coach Shoop to Tennessee? He was a freshman wide receiver on the 2015 Penn State team.

Shoop is now in a position to be real picky about any next move he might make.

Debord, Scott and buTch can all teach him many things about being a Head Coach so he's in a great position to learn and get better prepared for a HC job.

Shoop and his family are now stable for the next 3 years with this contract with Tennessee and he's earning over $1 Million per year and in a state that does NOT have a state income tax which is also a huge bonus.

As long as buTch stays and Shoop does a good job recruiting, teaching players and getting WINS then Shoop will stay too.

Shoop will certainly get HC offers in the next year or 2 BUT now he's in a solid position to pick and choose exactly where he and his family want to move to next so he just may stay here longer than most think until the perfect HC opportunity that fits exactly what he and his family really wants.

Example is how many years Coach Smart stayed at alaBubba before he took the UGa job and Coach Shoop could do exactly the same thing.

For all we know Shoop may not even want all the headaches, hassles and extra workload of being a HC again for several more years or maybe not at all and if the WINS keep coming with our footVol team and he's having fun with greatly talented kids

He could be like Kirby Smart and stay at Tennessee for many years to come.

As to KP, I think he wants to stay at the DE position forever and with Shoop calling the shots KP could turn into a superstar by the time he graduates and end up as a very high draft pick.

He would be really dumb to leave our footVol team, especially now with Shoop as DC, and both he and his AD Mom should know that.

It's seems kind of weird to have a very talented young man like KP on our team and his Mom being a AD at another school.

To me that's proof of serious love and wanting the very best future for her son and I really respect her for that since she has so much insider information in the college football world.

I would think that she's really impressed by buTch putting this HUGE WIN together to reel in Shoop.

Our coaches and recruits just keep getting better and better and I love it!

I'm not sure why this keeps being brought up.
1989 Yale (GA)
1990 Virginia (GA)
1991–1993 Northeastern (DB)
1994–1996 Yale (DC)
1997 Villanova (DC)
1998 Army (DB)
1999–2002 Boston College (DB)
2003–2005 Columbia
2006 UMass (DB)
2007–2010 William & Mary (DC)
2011–2013 Vanderbilt (DC)
2014–2015 Penn State (DC)
2016–Present Tennessee (DC)

It looks exactly like how you climb the ladder to a top coaching position to me. Can you point to any of those schools and say he should've stayed there longer?

Tennessee may be the exception or another step to a HC position. Either way we win.

I agree with you that this does look like a typical rise of the coaching ladder, but just to debunk any potential claims of being a "short-timer" or "claim-jumper", Coach Shoop probably should stay put this time for 3-5 years, regardless, and/or at least 2 NCs.
