Shoop's D

Aaaaand he was also one of the reasons we were in the mess to begin with. His fumble early on set the tone of the rest of the game. Glad he could make up for it with a pick of his own, but without that fumble I think we go on to win with a little more comfort. Albeit probably still a tougher game then people expected. At least some of us.

We got screwed out of a jaabar gaffney catch, Sutton fumble, all that they dwelt on. The list goes on n on.

The team adjusted. The App. State scheme is unorthodox. No way they got a good look at it in practice. As the game went on, play that were working stopped working. That's coaching, IMO.

I thought the defense played pretty well. App. State's early success was to be expected.

Hit of the game goes to Gaulden. Not bad for the "second string" NB. SMH. He needs to be on the field more IMO

Defense was poor in the first half, much better in the second half--but it is worth noting that we gave up a long AppState drive to end the game that came very close to beating us.

To add, App was number 1 in total o in the sun belt. Their motions and misdirection got us early. No stunts, no blitzes. Pretty vanilla d.

Could not be more pleased with the defense. They came to work and lost the best player on that side to a bogus call

Sutton is the biggest reason we won this game tonight

Cam set the table twice for us. Unfortunately, the miffed punt return fumble seemed like took the air out of our team for awhile. The good news was, his interception turned things around and gave us momentum.

Imagine if App State punched it in on that drive to go up 20-3....ball game.

THIS!!! Our DC made great adjustments as the game wore on. Unfortunately our OC has not a clue how to do that at this point. It's like he learned nothing from last year's OU and UF debacles.

The D played terrible in the first half. They almost cost us the game.
Defensive backs are still NOT being taught to keep their eye on the ball. AS scored a touchdown on us because of this.
Actually, I was disappointed in every aspect of our game plan and execution.
If this is the best Shoop has to offer, then we are in trouble.
Play calling makes me vomit.

You realize the cover man on that play was DE Corey Vereen right? Obviously he is not going to have the cover skills a DB does. Other than that, their passing game produced nothing. So their one big passing play came against a DE. Give me a break.

Corey Vereen is not a defensive back.

They did have some good plays late in the game and App St supposedly has a good O Line, but if we don't get better D-line play during the SEC season we will be in trouble.

This^^. Their small OL was opening up cave sized holes in our DL. Alot of work needs done on both sides of the ball before the B @ B.

The DB who got burned for the TD was actually a DL. He did pretty good even being near the play.

I think an unsung hero for last night's game was Cortez McDowel. No way he was expecting to play that much, but he stepped in and held his own! Good job young man.

App State threw the ball 23 times and ran the ball 43 times. On almost all of their drives we were playing a deep safety in a Tampa 1 style. They were running it on us at will and we kept that safety back there just in case they decided to throw a deep ball. That play calling almost cost us the game. Oh they also out rushed us 184 - 127

I was actually surprised Vereen was as close as he was given it was a RB he was tasked to cover.

Is that the unit you expected to see when Shoop was hired, SLV?

No. I think they'll fly around more moving forward. But, the App. State offense WANTS that aggressive, attacking defense. They depend upon it for their offense to work. The big runs they were getting came mostly from over-pursuit, which comes from aggressiveness absent of discipline.

And, they were certainly flat, no question. But, I also think they were a little shellshocked after getting a three-and-out and giving it back on a muffed punt. Then JRM gets the boot.

Do they have to get mentally tougher? Of course, they'll have plenty more adversity before the season is over.

The whole team was flat. As I said in another post: They may stink, but it's a week-to-week game. They certainly have the potential to be far better.

Either this was a learning opportunity or it wasn't. We'll see.

I am not saying at all that I am not concerned. But, it's a little early for Chicken Little.

I respect what you're saying. In hindsight, I wish we could've used App State's approach when Shoop was D coordinator at Vandy.
