Shoop vs. Chavis

Pathetic, really. Hard to assign that strong of a word to a team that won.

We won on a prayer and a miracle pass that even Dobbs himself said he did not think would be completed.

D on the last score was weak but the second half we were pretty good as well.

Our D had 2 really bad series in the 2nd half....both resulted in TDs that should've beaten us.

I do not know why we are so slow to start in the first half of games but conditioning and depth are more than likely the culprits.

I don't think it is a matter of conditioning in the first half. We have NOT looked fatigued in any game so far. I don't think it's any single thing--but I do think it's a lack of URGENCY mixed in with a little big of overconfidence that is borderline cockiness....exhibit A = Hurd's carelessness in "trotting" into the end zone.

I also think our opponent's have prepared well to stop our vanilla and generic offensive scheme--as well as poor performances by our OL early on in the game. Conditioning has actually HELPED us in the 2nd half.

Georgia offensively had a bad game against OM, but they did beat NC didn't they? Who did they beat, FSU who beat OM?

This line of reasoning is NEVER VALID...sorry....

Your knowledge of football may be extraordinary

I just have a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of the game because I played for some very good coaches. And I watch a lot of COACHES who explain a lot of stuff as they break down film. Lots of stuff out there on the internet to learn from if you take the time to seek it out.

but you do realize that each game is one of matchups and we have some players that coordinators are going to expose.

This statement is one that I take issue with because it is the most misleading statement made in the press--but it ALWAYS sounds good.

Football in the SEC--and everywhere else--is a game that is won in the trenches. If you lose that battle, it will not matter what happens in the match-ups between the WRs and the DBs--even if you have a match-up advantage out there!

Did you watch last Friday night's game between Stanford and Washington? That's a GREAT example of what I am talking about. Washington DOMINATED Stanford in a shocking display of a VERY DOMINANT Defensive line.

They got PRESSURE and contained Stanford's QB with only 4 DL rushing him--and they honestly rattled his cage so bad that he never recovered over the course of that entire game. He held the ball too long even when he had wide open receivers because of it.

The matchups Stanford could win in that game never materialized because of Washington's DL....

On the other hand--Washington DID take advantage of their matchups with Stanford's substitute DBs because their OL dominated Stanford's DL....and protected their QB. That Washington QB had the game of his life!

I was WRONG and picked Stanford to win...but honestly--after watching the game....it would NOT have mattered if Stanford BOTH of their CBs healthy for that game because Washington was DOMINATING the LOS!!!

To be sure--UGA took advantage of their TE against our sub LB in #20 McDowell to get a TD in the 3rd QTR that was a poor match-up--So, we did have a poor match-up with our LB against their TE....BUT---

IT ALSO happened because we kept running a COVER 2 man under scheme all day with both Safeties providing over the top coverage on the outside. This SCHEME ALWAYS leaves the middle of the field WIDE open for the TE or the slot receiver to exploit our LBs.

Shoop got out-coached here by Chaney in his recognition of Shoop's scheme and called a play to exploit it. Good football on UGA's part, but POOR performance by our alleged GENIUS DC!

You don't have to stay in Cover 2 man under to expose ourselves to this play--You may run Cover 1 man under or even Cover 3 to prevent that play from happening. But we did--and we even continued to run it and gave up ANOTHER TD that should've beaten us!!

And THAT IS WHY I SAY what I have seen from SHOOP so far has not been PRETTY.

I enjoy the conversation--and sometimes go overboard in my statements....but I'm just being honest about what I see out there.

And I capitalize words not to yell, but to emphasize.

We're just not getting it done so far on D--and I firmly believe that aTm is gonna expose us in a very bad way this Saturday. :salute:

GO VOLS!

Chavis (just like a lot of other DCs) has trouble with scrambling QBs.

I do think Shoop is a superior tactician, but there were some elements of "3rd and Chavis" on Georgia's final drive Saturday.

Not Shoop's fault the DB checked up. The play was covered.

KEY WORD is AVERAGE!!!

We have played 5 teams--2 SEC teams and our defense is not good enough to stop the run...ON a consistent basis--as evidenced by giving up ON AVERAGE 140 yards of running the ball each game.

We've played one decent half of SEC caliber Defense, and it was against a team that just scored 13 points against Vandy.

Also--UGA's offense is NO WHERE near being good....they had to drive 80 yards against Mizzou just to win the game and put 28 points on the board.

Against a GOOD DEFENSE--UGA could barely put 14 points on the board....

We allowed teams like Appy and Ohio move the ball up and down the field at will....and BENEFITTED from a LOT of turnovers against a VT team....

But, you guys just keep holding on to your illusions...
I know that we have some injuries, but not all of those guys were hurt in the 1st 3 games.

So--say whatever you want--we are getting PATHETIC defensive play.....

And, even though we limited UGA running the ball in the 2nd half--we gave up 81 yards in 4 plays to allow UGA the go-ahead score and almost LOST the game with PATHETIC DEFENSIVE PLAY CALLS....

If you want to express some amazement--go back and watch our entire defensive performance against UGA and see truly how pathetic it really was from start to finish....

And REQUIRED a UGA 15 yd penalty and a MIRACLE hail mary to win.....

And I predict right now that aTm hangs at least 40 on us this Saturday--because they are the most complete offensive team we have faced to date.

If anyone ought to be amazed--it's the ones who know the game and just how pathetic we've been on D all year--except for 2 QTRs against Fla.

:salute:

Stupid post! You expect TN to hold everyone scoreless obviously. Just because not every team is in a power 5 conference doesn't mean they can't move the ball.

Love Chavis, especially his prowler package in the swamp in 2001. But Chavis also gave us 3rd and Chavis, the mustang package, and the 4th quarter against UCLA in 2008 which was the single biggest Tennessee defensive failure I care to remember.

Shopping makes adjustments like no one I've ever seen at Tennessee. The runner up is what Kiffin did with Crompton.

Where did I say this--ever--in any post that I've ever made? Can you even read??? But, for the record, I do expect our SEC defense to hold App. State and Ohio to less than 100 yds RUNNING the ball....is that too much to expect? You be the judge, genius!

Just because not every team is in a power 5 conference doesn't mean they can't move the ball.

And I didn't say that I expected them to keep every team outside of the SEC from moving the ball.....

But good grief, son--barely beating App. State in OVERTIME...and giving up all those plays to OHIO....and yes--we were dern lucky in that game with VT....if they would have held onto the ball a little--we might not have won that game...

But have you watched ANY GAMES?

SHOOP himself said that NOBODY WOULD be able to move the ball against us by running the ball----so will you please attempt to get your facts straight before you make dumb statements....we giving up an average of 150 yds/game rushing...

let me spell it out slowly for you....that's not G.....o.....o.......d

The Cheif is an excellent D.C. But I never cared for his prevent defense. Also I felt we played man coverage too much under him. In my opinion you must keep the OC guessing what coverage he is going to get. And, make the QB READ IT. Cheif was good at baiting the QB to throw an interception.

You do realize we are missing one of the best tackling LBs in the country right? We are also missing a top 5-7 DB in the country. And missing a very good starting MLB.

Well seeing what you posted, you clearly don't get it.
