It was a comparison........

Our defense has looked pathetic so far--except for 2nd half against Fla, who is a very weak offensive team.

UGA is also a very weak offensive team--held to 14 points against Ole Miss--a team that gave up 48 points at home to Alabama--who is a very good offensive team.

Conclusion:

We in serious trouble defensively because the next two games we play are against two of the best offenses in the entire SEC!!!

Trevor knight running would be outside. Alot of our problems early on stopping the run was Georgia trying to establish the run to get to second level up the heart of out defense against back up linebackers. Trevor Knight will be discouraged from running inside. Look for his threats to run causing Barnett to stay home in case to protect the flats.

that was more execution by the players. Jumper bit on the PA on the long touchdown to the TE, and McDowell did not cover the guy. And Foreman, we know what happened with Foreman on the final bomb.

I agree about Florida, but Georgia has quite a good offense (despite the Ole Miss showing) as does Virginia Tech.

Also, A&M's offense scares me a bit more than Alabama. Though both are very good.

Boy, you sure did just pick one stat out, didn't you? That stat alone doesn't tell the whole story.

App State rushed for 184 yards on 43 carries for a 4.3 average. Passed for just 108 yards.

VTech rushed for 186 on 45 carries for a 4.1 average. That includes a 69 yard run and any junk yardage after we go up 45-17.

Ohio rushed for 88 yards on 30 carries for a 2.9 average. Had to throw a lot.

UF rushed for 106 yards on 31 carries for 3.4 average. Beat us with the pass in the first half.

UGA rushed for 181 yards on 46 carries for 3.9 average. Defense did not play well in the first half against the run.

But those numbers aren't nearly as bad as just saying that we are giving up 140 yards rushing per game, especially if the passing numbers aren't very good for the opponent. I am not saying that we have been world beaters, but we are also missing 3 All-SEC players.

Spot on!

If we hold A&M to 4ish yards per carry, I like our chances. I think their running back is averaging something crazy like 8/9 yards per carry.

Jesus, 44, Georgia had a whopping 34 total yards rushing in the 2nd half. What, pray tell, is horrible about that?

The part that worrys me is with a slow start vs aTm I'm afraid they will put 30 on us before halftime which will force Dobbs to pass vs the best pass rush we will face all year.

Teams have shown they can burn us with the deep ball (even Ohio) as long as our pass rush dont get to the qb. aTm has 4 awesome wr's that are more than capable of doing just that.

aTm also has the best rushing Offense in the SEC so you almost have to stack the box to slow it down and that's when those 4 wr's beat you deep.

I just don't like this match up even with our 3 all sec players healthy so I sure don't like it without em. I won't however count these Vols out of any game and I know almost as fact that if they play up to their talent level from kickoff to 00:00 that we can beat ANYBODY including these next 2 opponents. Just have to play a complete game.

Shoop will have his hands full but so will Chavis.

I think Knight will be the second running QB the UT D will be facing. Jerod Evans of VT was the first. The Vols pretty much held him in check with 16 carries for 18 yards.

KEY WORD is AVERAGE!!!

We have played 5 teams--2 SEC teams and our defense is not good enough to stop the run...ON a consistent basis--as evidenced by giving up ON AVERAGE 140 yards of running the ball each game.

We've played one decent half of SEC caliber Defense, and it was against a team that just scored 13 points against Vandy.

Also--UGA's offense is NO WHERE near being good....they had to drive 80 yards against Mizzou just to win the game and put 28 points on the board.

Against a GOOD DEFENSE--UGA could barely put 14 points on the board....

We allowed teams like Appy and Ohio move the ball up and down the field at will....and BENEFITTED from a LOT of turnovers against a VT team....

But, you guys just keep holding on to your illusions...
I know that we have some injuries, but not all of those guys were hurt in the 1st 3 games.

So--say whatever you want--we are getting PATHETIC defensive play.....

And, even though we limited UGA running the ball in the 2nd half--we gave up 81 yards in 4 plays to allow UGA the go-ahead score and almost LOST the game with PATHETIC DEFENSIVE PLAY CALLS....

If you want to express some amazement--go back and watch our entire defensive performance against UGA and see truly how pathetic it really was from start to finish....

And REQUIRED a UGA 15 yd penalty and a MIRACLE hail mary to win.....

And I predict right now that aTm hangs at least 40 on us this Saturday--because they are the most complete offensive team we have faced to date.

If anyone ought to be amazed--it's the ones who know the game and just how pathetic we've been on D all year--except for 2 QTRs against Fla.

Chavis is gonna do to us what Appy State did to us---play gap control to stop us from running the ball and get pressure on Dobbs and force him to make some plays throwing the ball down the field.

And it could get ugly if Dobbs throws a couple of picks in the game. aTm gonna pick our secondary apart with better athletes and receivers than we've seen so far.

We will have to score 45-50 points to have a chance to win the game and I just don't see it happening.

I am impressed with our SR. leadership and the never-say-die attitude of this team, for sure.....

But, make no mistake about it, it ain't fun to watch poor fundamentals and poor performances on both offense and defense.

And that crap catches up with you when you play better competition. VT is not better than we are by any stretch of the imagination--but we benefited from what, 5 turnovers in that game---or that game could've had a very different outcome if VT would've held onto the ball.

You can disagree all you want--it is your right....but I just know what I'm seeing out there on the field right now and it ain't very pretty.

And--based on what I'm seeing so far--I expect both Bama and aTm to score 40+ against us.....and I also seriously doubt this offense's current ability to match them score for score.

Chavis is overrated. Most points allowed EVER in two different games against UF. In 1995, we gave up 62 with a defense full of NFL starters. In 2007 we gave up 59.

I get sick of hearing that he's a "great" defensive coordinator. He's good and that's it. Dime a dozen as far as I am concerned.

Love Chief, nvmd the circumstances under which he left Tennessee, he'll always be a Vol

Shoop's the better tactician, overall I like his game planning and in-game adjustments. Execution hasn't always been there but first year an on-field learning curve is to be expected. Then there's the challenge of playing w/o three of his best thankfully our D-line is in tact

Pathetic, really. Hard to assign that strong of a word to a team that won. D on the last score was weak but the second half we were pretty good as well. I do not know why we are so slow to start in the first half of games but conditioning and depth are more than likely the culprits. Georgia offensively had a bad game against OM, but they did beat NC didn't they? Who did they beat, FSU who beat OM? Your knowledge of football may be extraordinary but you do realize that each game is one of matchups and we have some players that coordinators are going to expose.

I think what shoop has done with the injuries we have is pretty darn good. Hes coaching d with one arm tied behind his back. Not to mention the kids have only had 5 games in his system.

I have a lot of respect for everything Chavis did at UT. His work at LSU and A&M is similarly awesome.

That being said, I'm also amazed by Shoop. His schemes and play calling have been very successful. Unlike Chavis, Shoop's defenses at Vanderbilt and PSU were not full of 4 and 5 star caliber players. Even at UT, we have issues with depth at several defensive positions on account of our injuries. Still, I think many of us have been impressed with his adjustments and how he calls a game.

Overall, I credit Shoop with being the superior tactician, though Chavis knows how to use a talent/depth advantage. I'm hoping Dobbs can do just enough to keep the Chief on his heels. I think Shoop is going to have to be creative with his linebackers this week, and I'm fully confident he'll have our boys ready for Saturday from the first play to the last.

How do you see these two coaches calling the game this weekend? Who calls it better?

Our rushing stats are a red herring basically because we havent forced teams to come from behind very often. If we continue to find ourselves in the hole I would expect teams to continue running the ball. Imo, Shoop has failed in early downs early in the game.

Shoop hands down. Shoop was incredible at Vandy, where players were not highly rated. Chavis was loaded at UT and LSU. I could of been the DC for both those teams and had the same kind of numbers. What did Chavis do during UT down year? Nothing. That's why he is called third and Chavis didn't know how to stop any of the good teams at the end of the game
