“The fact that you’re thinner inside and deeper outside, I mean, I’m gonna find it hard getting reps for seven guys on the perimeter. But we have packages and we have thoughts to work Derek inside at times. He’s volunteered to do that, and he’s done that in the past in certain packages. Jonathan Kongbo … we had a kid at Penn State named Anthony Zettel. He was a rotational D-end, and we moved him to three-technique, and then he’s the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2014. You transition a guy into a big three-technique who’s explosive and dynamic and all those things, and he might have a bright future.

“There’s seven D-ends right there that I’ve got to find reps for at some particular point,” he said.

So he's referring to those "seven D-ends right there" as Barnett, Vereen, Phillips, Kongbo, Lewis, Mixon and....Taylor? Austin Smith? Andrew Butcher? My bet is Taylor, but who knows.

If I had to guess, I'd say Taylor since Butcher and Smith are both somewhat limited due to injury ATM.

Butcher is limited due to being recruited over.

He's a RS FR. If he can manage to get healthy and stay healthy, I'm not ready to close the door on him contributing in some manner at UT. 4 years is a lot of time to improve UT is set to lose 3-4 of those 7 DEs after this season.

Link to Anthony Zettel's stats and NFL draft analysis. At 6'4" 277 he was All-Big-Ten in 2014 when he rotated inside and out on the line, but was less successful in 2015 when moved to interior full time. Bottom line, I think Barnett and Kongbo are probably the only ends on our roster with the size to play in the middle, but both would still be vulnerable to the run. This approach would also likely eliminate either from playing any reps in dime packages with 3 DLs. Barring injury, Shoop is right that he will be challenged to keep all the DEs happy with their playing time. This actually could result in a decision to redshirt Tuttle this season.

A lot of it may depend on how we are doing as a team. Once Tuttle becomes 100%, if we are in the hunt for an SEC or National Championship, I'd say Butch absolutely will play him. He'll want every advantage he can get to get us to Atlanta or a playoff berth.

Undersized for a true SEC DE. Look at Kongbo - that's what you want.

I'll trust Shoop's ability to evaluate an opponents OL and put folks on the inside that can exploit a weaker player. If he sees someone that he believes Barnett or Kongbo can get around and disrupt the QB, I could see special packages designed for that kind of thing.

C'mon man...we haven't had a DE the size of Kongbo since Shaun Ellis and Ellis wasn't the freak of nature with <10% body fat that Kongbo appears to be.

Butcher is plenty big enough to be an effective DE in the SEC IF he has the talent. Remember 3 time all-American David Pollack at GA? He was 6'-2" and around 250.

The way VN wants to rag on Jumper and Butcher, it makes me wonder if there's not a "white player" bias on here with many posters?

Pretty sure it has to do with the fact that Jumper plays like the walk on that he is/was, not because he's white. Get out of here with that crap.

Jumper isn't good. I don't need to go into any further detail. I'm sure he's a great kid, he's doing something most of us dreamed of, but he's not sec caliber.

Butcher may or may not be but I don't know because he hasn't played. I think volnation has "high expectation" bias because we expect to win. For the first time since fulmer we have legit pre season hype.

:pepper: Finally we have depth on the O-Line and D-Line so the guys can get some plays off, if you played you know going 100% for the pull game never happen last year, now we can expect to see close to 100% out of our ends most of the game...:cheer:

When players are wearing Orange & White they're all the same color. GBO!

I like Butcher, but I have to agree with you here at least to a degree. There have been successful ends at his size, but I don't recall a ton of them.

EDIT:

butcher.jpg

Not trying to say that Butcher is going to be as good as Barnett, but there is literally zero reason to doubt this guy. If anyone watched the spring game from his first spring on campus (he was an EE btw..knows the defense better than most by now I'd say, etc.), but in the Circle of Life drill he won his battle against Jack Jones who stands at 6'4, 307 lbs, outweighing butcher by 50+ lbs. The same Jack Jones who played in 9 games last year, started against Bama and didn't allow a sack against UGA.

He's fast and mean, and clearly talented. Plus he's got some crazy in him which I like a lot. I like Darrell Taylor, but he hasn't given a reason for people to think he's better than Butcher. Same for Austin Smith, who has barely practiced the position of DE. Haters gonna hate, but give this kid a chance before you crucify him.
