It's widely accepted Shoop has had good defenses for his career. I wanted to follow up by looking at the talent he worked with at PSU this year getting there.

All Big Ten nominees:
1st team - 1
Carl Nassib DE (consensus AA)
sacks 15.5
tfl 19.5
tackles 46

2nd team - none

3rd team - 2;
Austin Johnson DT
sacks 6.5
tfl 15
total 78

Anthony Zettel DE/DT hybrid
sacks 4
tfl 11
tackles 46

UT comparables
All SEC nominees
1st team - 0
partly due to SEC talent levels

2nd team
Derek Barnett
sack 10
tfl 12.5
tackles 69

Jaylen Reeves-Maybin
sacks - 6
tfl - 14
tackles - 105

other
Corey Vareen
sacks 3.5
tackles 9.5
tfl 39

DKjr
sacks 3
tfl 6.5
tackles 66

overall UT has a ton of potential but we did not have any production equivalents on the DL outside of Barnett. Our LB's did but that means our line was eating space more than shedding blocks. I have a hard time believing a stronger Tuttle and Khalil under Shoops won't flourish.

Good job OP and THANKS for it.

I also believe that DC Shoop will get our D really rocking.

The best thing on our D is that we finally have good, well talented depth all over most positions so we can rotate more often and not be gassed and dead in the 4th quarter.

That alone should help a lot with Team 120.

I look forward to great things next season.

Also I believe our new DC and our new TE coach will help a great deal in our recruiting.

Shoop's ability to develop talent and the speed and aggressiveness of his defensive schemes are really going to make a huge impact on our guys.

What I am drooling over is how this is going to up Derek Barnett and Kyle Phillips's game. Going to be a horde of turf chewing QBs.

My biggest take away was the DL TFL production under Shoop. It's signifigantly better than ours. With his focus on technique and aggressive style we should see better numbers. Our guys were often in the backfield but it would be only one guy and QB's often avoided them.

I pulled up total defensive stats when his name first started getting thrown around after Jancek departed and this is what Shoop's teams did:

2013 @ Vandy: 23rd ranked total def .... Tenn= 83rd
2014 @ Penn St: 2nd ranked total def .... Tenn=36th
2015 @ Penn St: 14th ranked total def....Tenn=36th

So Idk if this has any true relevance, but I can say that I believe Tenn has had better defensive talent than these teams during these seasons but underperformed

I would agree our DL appeared to be playing as you have suggested, but I think they were being coached to be gap fillers and space eaters as a first responsibility. On many occasions I watched some on our DL hold their positions over rushing when they could have and I have to believe when that happened it was a defensive play call. That strategy actually worked well in that we beat UGA and outrushed Bama with their Heisman RB of which both teams are committed to running the ball. I do expect Shoop to have an overall more aggressive defensive front, no doubt about it, and I think it will produce for us.

Coach Shoop has an eye for talent:rock:

I don't think anyone can deny that.

buTch and our other coaches have pretty good eyes for talent too.

With the additions of Shoop and Scott to our coaching staff and as close as we came to getting the WIN over Oklahoma and alaBummer this past season Tennessee will probably start getting lots of PR hype as a serious potential Playoff contender.

All that great Press plus adding 2 really good recruiters and 1 of them with serious contacts in Florida I think we should start getting more serious interest and closer looks and visits from top 5* and 4* kids to really boost our recruiting.

The 1st time we get the WIN over floriDUHHH and alaBummer our rankings and PR will go through the roof and I think Team 120 will accomplish both next season.

Our players KNOW for a fact just how close they were this season and their attitude for next season will probably be...we will NOT be stopped and denied!

My biggest worry for after next season is how much great talent we'll lose to the big NFL $$$ as well as graduation.

That's why recruiting every year must stay great.

Right you are. Seemed like too many times we'd have a guy roaring in from wide, then get suckered toward the middle as QB escaped to the outside.

I would be interested in seeing the average defensive starter recruiting rankings for the Vandy teams and Penn St. teams for the Shoop years vs. UTs average defensive starter recruiting rankings for the comparable years. Who wants to hook it up?

Shoop makes D's better. He has at his last 3 DC jobs. At Vandy and PSU, his immediate impact was about 100 ypg in total D LESS.

In '10, Vandy had 20 sacks (11th out of 12 SEC teams). In Shoop's first year, they had 27 for 7th in the SEC. In his last season, they recorded 28 for 4th. PSU had 28 in the season before Shoop. He improved sacks to 31 and then 46.

If you look at Penn States overall recruiting ranking in 2011-15 vs ours you can see that indeed, Shoop did a lot more with a lot less in some respects.

If you wanted to look at a more granular level though, you could look at only individual defensive starters to reallly see how the talent lined up. I may tell my boss I have a 2 hour conference call and get to work on it. See you boys on the otherside.
