Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop has identified a pair of new Volunteers who should play this fall: JUCO transfer DL Jonathan Kongbo and freshman DB Nigel Warrior.

“Heading into fall camp those two would be the most likely of the newcomers to play,” Shoop told SEC Country. “Kongbo is physically very imposing, he’s eager and he’s done a great job the past two months getting stronger and faster.

“Remember, football is still fairly new to him. He played high school football in British Columbia for a year, went to Wyoming and then a junior college in Yuma (Arizona Western), so it’s not like he’s a 19-year veteran.”

Warrior, on the other hand, has grown up with football as the son of former UT DB Dale Carter. He frequently demonstrates that familiarity with the game.

“Warrior is very natural, and the game seems to come easy to him in that he’s very fluid in his movements,” Shoop said. “I feel like with all of the different packages we have, featuring multiple defensive backs, it will be hard to keep him off the field when all is said and done.”

Shoop essentially confirms what Saturday Down South’s Dan Harralson predicted when he named Kongbo and Warrior to his list of three summer arrivals who could help Tennessee this fall. has identified a pair of new Volunteers who should play this fall: JUCO transfer DL Jonathan Kongbo and freshman DB Nigel Warrior."

If Nigel balls out as a FR do you think it opens D. Gibbs eyes up? "It don't matter if I'm a freshmen. If I'm good they will play me."

Asked this in the Brandon Johnson thread iirc. How exactly is it that Shoop is making player evaluations when no practices are going on?

They get to have some number of "skill development" practices during the summer where they install and practice scheme a bit (sans pads and whatnot).

Probably that in addition to strength and conditioning.

SDS has a picture of Warrior in full gear saying first interception for Warrior at Tennessee. So he got to see something.

I think we will also see a couple of guys on offense make the grade. I realize that a lot will be red shirted unless there are some major injuries. At this level of play, a first year red shirt year benefits almost all freshmen and therefore the team this year and in the future. The infusion of talent over the last 3 years is very impressive.

I would think from workouts, tapes, conversations with players, reports from summer workouts, etc. I can bet you the coaches are not sitting on their butts drinking beer all Summer.

Im not sure we will see very often Barnett with his hand in the dirt inside as a NG. I do see him always as a DE and however running a stunt inside on occasion. Barnett is an equally skilled run defender as well as pass rusher and I don't see this defensive staff allowing a talent like that getting trapped inside with a double team to often which happens easily if he gets stuck at NG. It weakens the perimeter of half our defense sticking him inside at the snap, I just dont see that happening.
