I sure hope he's not Butch's "Clawson" on the defensive side! VN will tear him apart if so. Hopefully if Thig, Stripling and Martinez are retained, it will be a smooth transition! Bright days ahead for our D if so.
What will we be? Well be an in-your-face style defense thats built on relentless pursuit and never-ending pressure. But Coach Jones and I talked about this a lot, its techniques over tactics, really coaching fundamentals, really coaching techniques, really coaching Football 101, and I look forward to doing that this spring.
Our formula for success and its stood the test of time, whether its the Tennessee Titans, whether its the Tennessee Vols or whether its the local high school is simple. Stop the run. Were very committed to stopping the run. Eliminate any and all explosive plays. And create takeaways. Thats an area we think we can do better in. We want to be disruptive. We want to get after the quarterback. We want to create tackles for loss. Thats something we were very good at last year at Penn State.
You do not have to worry about that. Shoop has been in the SEC at Vandy and had top 25 defenses all 3 years that he was there. He knows what it's all about. I have no doubt we will beat Alabama next year.
The only thing that has me a little concerned is looking at his defensive ranking trends. They seem to start good and go down from there. Where as JJ started bad and got better. Now Shoops D were still highly ranked so its not that big of a deal. Just an observation![]()

Janzek's ranking improved as the quality of Tennessee's opponents dropped off during the season. More specifically, the quality of our opposition's offense dropped off as the season progressed, especially in the second half of the season.
