Shoop looking at Kongbo in 3-4 set

I'm picturing Kongbo at DT with Barnett and Vereen on the ends. Lewis and Taylor lined up on the outside rushing from the linebacker spots. Warrior,Kelly,Sutton,Mosley, Gaulden in Coverage with Abernathy playing deep.

3rd and long package.

We're going to have our base D for consistency.

Then we're going to have lots of different "packages" for different things that Shoop believes will come up based on down and distance as well as what he sees in his film study and what he knows about each specific O coordinator he's up against.

He may send in different packages as a way to use a different type of rotation to get players more breathers to keep them fresher for the 4th quarter.

With a 3-4 he can send blitzers from all over the field and he could put 3 or 4 DE's on the field at the same time who are fast and can pressure the QB so fast he can't think straight.

Shoop loves to play head games with the QB and with the O coordinator he's up against.

Get ready folks, the Shoop Troops of the Big Orange Swarm are coming and we're going to love it!

new DC. heralded as a genius.
3-4 scheme. good, sounds novel 😡

worked great for Gawja

As if we don't run 3-4 sets every. Single. Year.

All he's talking about doing is taking a Dtackle out of the 4-3 and putting another DE on the field. It's just not that exotic.

You're wasting your time. Some people see 3-4 and automatically freak out without the context.

I for one would love to see Kongbo coming out of that set after the QB. Imagine trying to stop that 280 lbs freight train...

Kongbo tweeted out last week his frustration with being moved inside. Since, he has deleted the tweet. The switch to 3-4, as everyone should, revolves around a nose-tackle that will essentially attack two offensive linemen simultaneously. Is Kongbo the type of NT to selflessly sacrifice his pursuit of the ball-carrier/QB so that our LBs can rack up their stats? Interestingly and fortunately, the 3-4 scheme is just a situational package that does not reflect our base defense. If Shoop can get Kongbo to buy-in to this defense then look out.

3-4 still gives me nightmares.

Well, we still had the same level of talent as before, we might work together on a consumer study on effective tranquilizers. Ones that just knocks you stone cold and suppresses REM states completely.

And if our DC were Sunseri or Jancek, we might walk up and down Pat Head Summitt St with picket signs that say, "3-4? WTF?" until UT police runs us off. (after they have taken pics of our signs and sent them to Butch.)

However, there are obvious reasons why not to worry. Most obvious is this idea is coming from Bob Shoop. And the fact we are lucky enough to get him tells me we don't need him tying his hands to make us sleep better.

Second point is improved talent and team speed. At first we hope for it in the secondary. Now we have DTs and DEs that can move well. And if Kongbo really is all that and a bag of gourmet chips, I am looking forward to someone trying to defend him in multiple sets.

The final point is for our linebackers. We have several on the roster, but how often do we use them? Last year, Jancek had our D almost exclusively in a 4-2-5. If they mix in 3-4 sets, we give more of these guys playing time.

So, let's bring it on, and if it still worries you, buy a teddy bear. It worked for Mr. Howell.

We aren't going straight 3-4. It is a wrinkle added on passing downs or long yardage situations. Let's more athletic players like Kongbo, Phillips and others to see the field. Shoop has mentioned trying to get everyone on the field that plays Dline because of the talent.

Kongbo is going to have frustrations. But he should stop tweeting it. Kinda silly to show the whole world his weaknesses.

Until he gets some experience, and develops his technique rather than just relying on his amazing raw talent and overwhelming self confidence, he is not going to know his full potential. He isn't in Canada anymore, or Wyoming, or JUCO. This is the SEC, where the big boys play.

Anyone who bought the hype and did not anticipate him having alot of growing pains just need to immigrate to Fantasy Island. I am starting to believe in him, but he is going to need time to learn.

But if he lives up to this challenge, he may not be "selflessly sacrificing his pursuit." He just may habitually shoot the gap, and crush a QB before anyone else gets even close to him. His best shot at living up to being King Kongbo. That ought to make him happy.

I hope they are going to rush some LBs along with the 3 DLs on long passing downs.

I would assume we would at least have 5 DBs instead of 4 LBs on long passing plays. 3-4 doesnt make sense on passing downs

Yeah forgot about Vickers...he's strong enough for the double teams

Mixon will give us a bunch of quality reps as well, he has a great motor. I remember his name being call several times last year... great to have this kind of depth

Good lord. That just hurts to read. I recall reading Waggner was such a ball hawk in practice. And now I see it's because he was the only one that could run under a 4.5! I exclude Coleman from the criticism bc I'm sure he was young here and he turned out to be slightly better than average.

Since it's not the BASE scheme, just a defensive package, I can see the potential. Growing pains shifting to a new scheme usually are the result of trying to make ill-fitting players fit into it. In this case it'll be deployed to accentuate some individual strengths. As above posts concerning Kongbo's fit asserted.

P Swag ran 4.8 at the combine

Coleman 4.5

Teague 4.7

This is pretty exciting stuff. "Not youth league soccer." :eek:lol:

"I've tried to show him as a 3-4 (end), we can stem him from an inside guy to an outside guy and put he and (Derek) Barnett or he and (Corey) Vereen or he and (LaTroy) Lewis on the same side to make it very difficult."

"All (seven) deserve the opportunity to play," Shoop said. "This isn't youth-league soccer. It's not going to be balanced reps, but to get seven defensive ends the reps they deserve is challenging.

"That's why ultimately we're trying to demonstrate to one of the guys why maybe moving to three-technique would be a wise decision for him and for the best interest of the team."
