"We've got a couple different things where we may move to a 3-4," Shoop said.

Shoop shared that insight when asked about heralded junior college signee Jonathan Kongbo, 247Sport's No. 1-ranked junior college player in the 2016 signing class. The 6-foot-6, 282-pound Kongbo is being tested by Vols' coaches at both end and sliding down a spot to the line's interior.

"I've tried to show (Kongbo) as a 3-4 we could stem him from an inside guy to an outside guy with he and (Derek) Barnett or he and (Corey) Vereen or he and (LaTroy) Lewis on the same side would make it very difficult."

Shoop touts schematic options, versatility

Related piece: Tennessee has continued to experiment with junior-college transfer Jonathan Kongbo, one of the stars of its 2016 signing class, at both defensive end and defensive tackle throughout preseason practice. But it’s still not clear which position might be his primary home.

First-year Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said Friday that it could “be determined on a weekly basis” whether Kongbo, a redshirt sophomore, will help at defensive tackle on a part-time or full-time basis this season, but he’s working there primarily in “pass-rush situations” right now.

Kongbo's position, role 'to be determined'

Since it's not the BASE scheme, just a defensive package, I can see the potential. Growing pains shifting to a new scheme usually are the result of trying to make ill-fitting players fit into it. In this case it'll be deployed to accentuate some individual strengths. As above posts concerning Kongbo's fit asserted.

This all day long. Switching screwed us once already. Not...this...year...

Take your Midol dude. We are talking about Bob Shoop, we are in good hands. Not to mention we have the perfect personnel to run a 3-4 if we need to, unlike when Sunseri was here.

I interpreted this as Shoop will only make the 3-4 a special package, not our base defense. I'm pretty sure Butch made sure the team would not learn a whole new defense when he hired Shoop, they would keep the same overall scheme. Let's not freak out over this.

Mainly undersized...but they made up for it by being slow. :)

Yes, I think Stoops is only talking third and long. Dime package type situations. With King Kong in the middle, we can line up three speed rushers and they can race to QB. Add in a mix of blitz pressure from wherever and boom....we got a Del Rio sandwich.

Going to look like these three hurdling over slow O-linemen...

Dude can you imagine the feeling as a QB having Barnett, Kongbo and/or Vereen barreling down on you full speed?! I would literally urinate, and potentially excrement, on myself. I would probably look like that Florida RB a couple years ago in the bowl game.

Go back and read the quotes. It's going to be used purely as a pass rush package to get a 3rd DE / Jack on the field to confuse pass protections.

Shoop knows more about football

Then ill ever know....

I'm a charter member of that club. I really believe the guy is so good and so adaptable rather than just running some base defense all season, he very well could wrinkle in our defense each week to exploit personnel weaknesses he sees. Against vanilla opponents, probably runs base but against SEC opposition, he's gonna have fun with 'em. The Kiffin vs Shoop match could be the greatest show on earth this year.

I had forgotten how bad that unit was, Teague and Waggner were horrendous and that d-line got literally no pressure. Coleman and Brewer were way too slow not to mention the lb's couldn't cover a woman in a wheel chair out of the backfield. I believe they are still trying to tackle Trey Burton.
