Shoop is the difference

This is a great hire!!!! Any coach that can take talent in the #60-100 range and get them in the top 25 has the XO's to blow it up!!! Vandy and PSU would have been dumpster fires with out HIS defense! I look forward to some serious agression on defense this year!

Alright I admit I know little about Shoop. So what will he do that Jancek couldn't?

From what I've read he is very aggressive with blitzes and creative turnovers.

I like the Feldman write up that says he is known for his in game adjustments. Something I think TN has had problems with dating g back to Chavis (who I hated to lose).

The guy has cautiously announced his involvement in the program yet and you guys got us going 15-0 and winning it all.. come on man. You have NO IDEA what he is going to do in the SEC. If he is a bust and we suck next year will you eat your shorts?

He has already coached in the SEC.

I'm hanging with DoubleD on his one - I believe this to be a homerun hire - same with Scott - but to start shouting 15-0 and natty is premature delusion. I think team 120's man focus should be winning the east.

He can anticipate what most offenses will do before they do them.

He had good talent to work with at Penn State
but nothing like what we fielded this year and NEXT year.
His track record speaks for itself. 3 top 25 defenses at Vanderbilt. Top 5 defense 1st year at Penn State. Another top 15 defense this year.

He provided IMMEDIATE results.

Bowling Green ripped us through the air
Arkansas ran at will.
Vanderbilt ran on us the whole first half at will.
UGA torched us with an average QB

Florida converted 5, 4th downs... 5!!

Shoop's ability to anticipate the offensive play calling should eliminate those 4th down collapses. If what Franklin said in that video is true, Shoop was correctly predicting 75% of offensive playcalls. I cannot wait to see what he does with the horsepower he now has with our defensive talent.

Literally makes no sense. He did great at Vandy where it's HARDER to coach because he had less talent and STILL did well in the SEC.

Just stop.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with CB here. If he can get it done at Vandy, I am quite sure he can get it done here.

One could argue that he had success at Vandy in the SEC East when the East was down and for all practical purposes it still is.

On paper with the stats, he looks like a great hire - but that is not a guarantee of success at Tennessee and many of you are way ahead of the season. Coaches have to prepare for opponents. Players have to execute. Players have to be able to play (e.g. limited injuries or deep depth to overcome injuries).

And then you have all the coaching changes that are happening everywhere ... success next year is not a guarantee. A team can have the best coaches and players and still lose. It is something that the coaches and team must continue to work towards.

I sure hope that Tennessee does go undefeated in 2016 because if they lose one game, this place will self-destruct.

VolNation self-destructs after every loss no matter what year it is.

As for hoping we go undefeated, don't we all hope that every year as well? I mean, except for our gator, dawg, bama and kentucky friends who spend time here. Don't we all, otherwise?

O.K. people, I'm excited to see what this guy can do, but what the freak makes you think it's going to work out yet? I haven't seen ANYTHING that says he is better than Jancek was. I'm not against the guy, but posting we are going 15-0 because we have a guy that , personally I don't know WHAT this guy is yet, and then to say it's all going to be roses his FIRST year, it takes coaches a few years ya know? Debord worked out because he and Jones have worked together so long there was no learning curve... I have NO IDEA about this guy yet. Get A Grip people.

Peruse the response of fans from schools that DIDN'T land him (i.e Auburn) vs fans of a school that FIRED Jancek (i.e Georgia). I tended to defend Butch's right to surround himself with those he trusted and give the staff the time they needed to coach up the talent (as it increased). Fact is Elder did FINE at coaching the TEs and Jancek did FINE at coordinating the defense...their replacements are BETTER. Maybe you're not convinced and that's your prerogative but there is a reason that there's a large number that are excited and disagree with you.

One other thing. Not specifically you, but there seems to be a certain segment of our posters that are registering panic over this move. I commend our usual Negavol voices like Wylo and Count who seem genuinely excited about this move. Almost like their fandom overrides their need to be right on the Butch Jones is a failure narrative? I'll issue a mea culpa on my enthusiastic support of the original staff without any outlook on the possibility of failure. :hi:

At some point ALL of us have to decide what's more important...winning or our version of what that is.

Any student of the game understands that when one of the top two ir three defensive coordinators in the country finally gets his hands on superior talent he can develop them--players and units--into a serious powerhouse. There's a reason Vandy had two consecutive ten win seasons and it was NOT Franklin.

Shoops is a huge win for us that will translate into huge wins next fall. And beyond.

If you know nothing about the guy, then look at what people-in-the-know are saying:

1. LSU and Auburn were going to pay him seven digits; LSU "settled" for Kevin Steele, and Auburn "settled" for Muschamp.

2. He's good enough that Dave Hart, who probably dines at Denny's, was willing to shell out 1 million+.

3. Numerous writers and insiders are lauding the hire. Travis Stephens said we now have the tools in place to make a run at a national championship (he probably knows something about what a national championship team looks like).

4. Penn State fans, who have observed his handiwork for two years, are in meltdown mode over losing him.

5. He has relationships with numerous mid-state players. The fact that many of our mid-state players were already following him on Twitter is a testament to this. Jalen Reeves-Maybin supposedly said he would return for his senior season if Shoop were hired. And while it doesn't affect 2016, the 2017 and 2018 classes are loaded with mid-state talent.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed. An undefeated season is statistically improbable, even for a team like Alabama. But suffice to say, we now have the tools in place to make such a run. A faster car doesn't guarantee that you'll win the race, but it increases your chances in a major way.

Vanderbilt never had 10 win seasons. 9-4 was their high water mark against a very weak schedule. How did their defense do against the top half of the SEC? I hope Shoop is great but he doesn't have a proven track record of success against top 25 teams to point to.

I understand what you are saying, but for the talent that Vandy can attract, Shoop's defenses were very good.
