Between 9-4 and 15-0 this year. Debord in his first year had some tough early tests and sometimes we needed our defense to bail us out, because they were the more veteran group.

They dropped the ball on that too often in key moments.
Some of it was youth. Some of it was not lining up right (discipline).

Overall... we had a decent to good defense. They played lights out sometimes! Sometimes. Jancek fielded a good aggressive unit.

I still think we could have won an SEC title with Jancek at DC. But with Shoop I feel it's damn near assured now.

You can't win EVERY game with a perfect balance of good offense and good defense and special teams over the course of the season.

There is a reason they say DEFENSE wins championships. Defense keeps points off the board. Defense through turnovers can even put points on the board. We need to be great, not good, but great defensively to take it to the next level! I believe Butch as just made the best hire of his career..

Having a great defense can carry a team a long way..

I'm excited about Shoop, but not ready to crown him the savior of UT football yet. I hope you are proven right!

Have a better chance of landing a head coaching job after he leaves here.

GO VOLS!

College Football has changed soooo much that there is no such thing as a 5 year plan. Schools need to progress in year 2 and 3 or it time to pack your bags. I miss the old days of knowing all the coaching staff, but it is what it is, I hope these hires brings UT to national prominence vs. just the SEC.

Go Vols!!

This is a really good thing because now buTch has many more years of knowledge and experience he can rely on.

During the week or during a game buTch can now ask opinions of others he respects and that have been there before to help him make the tough adjustments or decisions.

Adding these 2 new coaches is a HUGE Win for our footVol team in many ways.

Now they need to get busy recruiting, coaching the kids up and get ready for lots of WINS next season.

Team 120 has all the potential to become really special.

Building a Champion #BrickbyBrick & Coach by Coach...VFL...GBO!!!

Being a Program again is becoming the Savior of TN football....from Boosters, Administration, Coaches, Players and to some degree fans that bleed orange, thru thick and thin !

How much of a difference is it to have three former HC's now on staff? How many other SEC schools can say this? Bama has Kiffin, Cristobal and Bobby Williams, correct? Pretty impressive by CBJ to have three on staff now.
https://www.football.com/en-us/big-...atest-former-head-coach-on-butch-jones-staff/

The staff DJ Durkin assembled at Maryland this year had that many if not more former HC's on it. I think it's becoming more of a trend for P5 schools to hire HC's from lower tier schools in non-P5 conferences to coordinator and other staff positions

In the SEC, is Bama the only other school with three former HC's?

O.K. people, I'm excited to see what this guy can do, but what the freak makes you think it's going to work out yet? I haven't seen ANYTHING that says he is better than Jancek was. I'm not against the guy, but posting we are going 15-0 because we have a guy that , personally I don't know WHAT this guy is yet, and then to say it's all going to be roses his FIRST year, it takes coaches a few years ya know? Debord worked out because he and Jones have worked together so long there was no learning curve... I have NO IDEA about this guy yet. Get A Grip people.

I don't see issue with this. I see the issue of a new scheme. Does he evolve the current defense or install his own now. What do you do? What do you do? This is the year of possibly a NC why install change no matter how good you are..

The 49-year-old Shoop, who is well-regarded for his in-game adjustments and as a play-caller, led the nation's No. 2 defense in his first season at Penn State in 2014, and ranked No. 14 this season.

Shoop also was instrumental in Vandy making the Top 25 in 2012 and 2013. While running the defense at Vanderbilt for three years before coming to Penn State, Shoop directed the Commodores to Top 25 finishes in total defense every season: 18th (2011), 19th (2012) and 23rd (2013). His knowledge of the SEC is seen as a big plus for the Vols, as is his knowledge of the Vols' roster, as he knows many of the UT players from his time recruiting in the conference.

As FOX Sports reported Friday, Shoop visited Knoxville and spent the day around the Vols' staff. Getting a feel for the way he connected with UT’s assistants convinced Shoop, Butch Jones and his staff that it would be a good fit.

In the past year, he has turned down opportunities to become the DC at both Auburn and LSU.

You're right. Let's lose more games in the final minute and a half on 4th and 14 conversions for a touchdown.

The guy has cautiously announced his involvement in the program yet and you guys got us going 15-0 and winning it all.. come on man. You have NO IDEA what he is going to do in the SEC. If he is a bust and we suck next year will you eat your shorts?

Fair point but the counter point is just as fair.
He was the main reason Vandy was a ranked team.
I repeat, Vandy was a ranked team.

Look, the hire has taken place. We can either be excited and hopeful or,,,
Follow your suggestion and wait to see..
This is a web site dedicated to discussion. If we wait till next season happens before discussing, seems things may be a bit boring :hi:

I'm excited about Shoop as much as everyone one else. I believe in this hire because of the high regards he draws from people that know way more about football than myself. However, I am a little concerned that his first year at each stop (Vandy and PSU) is his best year and then his defense's ranking slide a little each following year. Granted they stay good, I would like to think a great coach would showed continued progress from one year to the next. Anyone have some insight that I may be overlooking that would explain this trend at two different stops

Well given the fact that he has already been a coordinator in the league, we have a pretty good idea.
