Shoop: "First no huddle defense"

I believe this is in reference to the amount of plays the VOLS defense expects to see from VT.

85 to 90 plays expected from the Hokies will leave little time for subs and our guys need to be alert. Hope we don't end up gassed.

I think he's saying that they're going to try to out scheme the HUNH offense by getting our guys lined up on the LOS before the offense has a chance to get lined up. That effectively takes away the uptempo advantage the offense has on the defense in HUNH offenses. HUNH is commonly used to line up and get the play off before the defense has the time to sniff out the play. By getting to the line first, especially with a JUCO QB going up against a defense as stout as UT's is, you make the offense second guess the play. This hopefully causes panic and bad reads by the QB and the offensive coordinator, especially if the defense can change reads on the fly.

Proactive vs. reactive. It's been taught in many professions that have to make quick, snap decisions. I like it and am excited to see it in action.

I think it means we're going to be forced into a no defensive huddle situation. IMO based on what he has seen he thinks VT will line up quickly get their play off and hope we screw up an assignment or a mismatch somewhere.

I never thought of the defense being in a "huddle", but do they need to? a lot of paradigms being broken this year.

Go Vols!!

The D can line up all they want but they still must adjust to the offensive formation. Not sure how lining up early really helps that much.

IMO, if Shoop is successful with his game plan scheme, i.e. blitz packages, etc., then hopefully the amount of plays will be limited. If the VOLS can force VT into a few 3 and outs, then we keep their defense on the field longer and increase our chances to wear them down by running the ball successfully.

Considering VT's new coach and his preference for a fast paced offense, I'd be fine if UT doesn't have to throw that often and is able to convert by running the ball on 2nd and 3rd down possessions over and over again. That scenario doesn't fair well for VT, especially if they're playing catch up.

It's either going to be amazing or horrible. I trust Shoop though. DeBord on the other hand...

It's really based off the opposing offense's scheme. If a team's scheme is based off of speed, a lot of times, they're using that speed to confuse the defense into getting lined up quickly and making the MLB, or whoever is in charge of calling reads on the defense, make the right read within a few seconds. By effectively 'flipping the script' and getting lined up prior to the offense, the defense forces the QB, or whoever is in charge of making the offensive reads, to react. So, in theory, this would put the reactive pressure back on the offense. I would say it would be even more effective if the defense has a few base formations that they can use to disguise different blitzes and pressures. It would be especially effective if that same defense was rotating players constantly, which can be used to disguise special blitzing packages that utilize specific personnel.

I'm no football expert, though... So, I could be, and probably am, wrong.

I'm thinking Thursday's performance didn't sit well with the Mad Scientist. He'll release the hounds and bring pressure all night. Barnett and Kongbo each get a sack if not two. Sutton houses one

I think you are right. The fast pace offense is based on catching the defense off guard. If the defense is set, the QB has to evaluate if the defense is lined up in a formation that would diminish the chance of a successful play. Or they take the chance and run the play.
