I really hope he is right because we actually need those guys plus a few more to contribute. The defensive line needs to dominate.

ANY depth on the DL will be welcomed this year.

MUST get Shy and K-Mac healthy and playing on the regular, too!

Yea, that was really ugly, and it's not like Vandy was a powerhouse on offense last season either. Whatever the coaching problem may have been let's hope they can correct it this year.

I'm not 100% sold on him either, but last year he tried to keep Jancek's terminology, and translate it into his own system so the veterans wouldn't struggle with communication. It's safe to say that turned out to be a poor choice, and probably played into some of the defensive staff changes that occurred at the end of 2016.

One mitigating reminder about Shoop's carefully worded response: "most" ready is Shoop comparing Butler only to the other freshmen, not necessarily to his standard for a DL he can count on against the SEC.

“He’s kind of come in on a mission. He’s very mature, very driven, has a mindset as if he wants to — it’s not in his mindset to redshirt. That’s not part of his vocabulary. He’d like to compete with these guys and see what happens.”

Maybe Shoop was not talking to us fans as much as to the other freshmen, setting a marker for the attitude he wants them all to assume.

Similarly, it's interesting that he cited Crosby as a probable redshirt because he "needs to lose a little bit of weight and put himself in position to be able to play at this level."

Not sure if that's intended to motivate Crosby to work harder this summer and prove Shoop wrong, or if that's accurate because they prefer to have players lose weight on a programmed schedule, rather than just drop pounds quickly. UT has earned a reputation for teaching players to own their health as a long-term lifeskill.

“When he introduced himself to the team the other day, he said, ‘My name is Matt Butler. I can play anywhere on the D-line,’” Shoop said. “And the guys kind of busted his chops, but that’s his mindset. That’s how he is. He’s really a great kid.”

Looking at this recent pic, he appears to have the upper body of a DE and the legs of a strong safety. He'll get there but it may not be this year; fantastic prospect who may've been the most underrated DL around.

How does even a high school S&C coach let him skip leg days, every time?!

Wasn't that Butch's idea?

I like Butch and Shoop but all the discussions about QB, Scott, offensive scheme, and Butch's ability don't matter if they don't solve the D from back end half of LY. Granted, injuries played a part, but if 600-700 allowed yards creeps into this year we are toast.

I think these comments by Shoop are significant. I realize it was in response to a direct question and only pertains to the newbies. But it's still unusual for a coach to single-out a young player with this kind of praise, unless he sees something really special in that player.

It's far too easy for a coach to deflect questions like this or just decline to be specific. So I take this as a very encouraging sign.

Another FAHR Butch post.

Not really. I'm one of the few UT fans that thinks Butch has done a decent job at UT. He's certainly NOT perfect, and blown games that he could have easily won, but considering the performance of the last two coaches at UT, he's done a decent job. If it was his idea to keep the old terminology and marry it with Schoop's schemes then it wasn't his best.

Lack of speed at safety and la k of depth at LB had more to do with stats than terminology.

Actually, terminology looked like it worked pretty well vs Fla and Ga except for DBs getting balls thrown over their head in those games. Sorry, not buying the terminology bull****. Coaches will say anything except 1) we got outcoached or 2) these guys we recruited can't play at this level.

Yea, lets turn every positive thread into a coach bashing party.

Didn't sound like "bashing" to me. I think people had lofty (and maybe unreal) expectations for last year based on Shoop's prior coaching stops. Injuries contributed to much of this situation. The jury is out on this coach and others. Hopefully the addition of new blood to the d line and d backfield will provide some good chemistry, and with better luck in regards to injuries, who knows. Some people doubt the existence of an 8 foot primate prowling the Pacific NW due to the lack of a body. Some fans might need a body of evidence trending toward success before they crown Shoop as the best thing since sliced bread. Experience will tell.
