I was hoping for a huge improvement over Shoop 1 but it looks like to me we have the same old defense we had last season. Whatever he did at Vandy and Penn State has totally disappeared at Tennessee.
We gave it up to injuries last season and we've had a few key defensive injuries this season. Still no reason to be gashed for 535 yards rushing by any team. So happy we won the game but we can't ever be an elite team with this very poor defense. We can't outscore everybody.
Hopefully this was just a bad game for the defense but I am worried that this defense will keep us from having a great season. I'll totally enjoy this win and hope that in two weeks we can get a lot better that what we showed tonight.

Too soon.

I'm no Shoop advocate at this point by any means but let's get a few more games under us before we hang him out to dry.

Shoops faced 2 problems:
GaTech ran 96 plays
UT ran less than 50 plays

It is another case of offense failing the defense.

I think Shoop is an overrated fraud. Hope I'm wrong but I've seen little to be impressed with so far. We looked soft against the run even before injuries last year.

they have a lot to work on that's for sure. can't really judge much after playing that offense.

Shoop is my biggest disappointment. D line play was atrocious, lb play was bad except Bituli. For goodness sake watch the damn film and watch Bambi Jumper get blown up. I mean a blind man can see this. Shoop is poop.

Jumper is smart but he is a liability sideline to sideline. Our tackles also played really really bad. Justin Martin was like watching one of us out there.

Hopefully we have players step up for more traditional offenses but teams will target jumper all day. They will abuse Martin if he plays man.

It's early but I liked Mosleys play, he looks improved in both size and skill. I've been hard on him but I hope he steps up this year. I also didn't remember hearing tkjrs name at all. I assumed with run heavy he would have really helped.

His defense just gave up 650+ yards....after allowing 600+ to Vandy last year....and 700+ to Missouri last year.....and 600+ to Kentucky last year....and nearly 600 to Alabama last year....and 600 to TAM last year.

What more do we need to see?

If he had full control of hiring his assistants, we would have an entire different defensive staff than we do now.

Exactly. Can't burn it down after one game, that'd be insane.

More than one game. Go look at his last year at Penn State. His defenses have given up over 200 yards per game rushing for more than 2 years now. He's a bust

And boom goes the dynamite. Not to mention how bad he was his last year at Penn State

Wasn't his statement when he was hired that NO ONE was going to run against TN, he was going to shut it down??

Our D is still horrible. Something is bad wrong with our D. I hope they get it fixed but they obviously didn't fix it during the off season, what makes us think they will get it fixed now.

I don't think you can judge based on this game. Their offensive scheme is too different from most other teams. I think it's still wait and see.

Too early to tell.

I was frustrated with our defense last night, too, but we simply don't know enough yet. Judging them against just one team, and that team was the best triple-option offense in the nation. It's gonna throw off your ability to gauge our abilities. Like having a yardstick in the shape of an 'S'. It's just gonna be wonky if you look too hard at it.

So I'm gonna withhold judgment for 2-4 more weeks. Florida will be a big test. And then Georgia. For now, what we know for certain is that we eke'd out a 'W' against a hella-good and quirky football team.

Go Vols!

No push up front by Hoke's DL. All i saw was guys getting blown off the ball 3 yards all night. They physically whooped our defense. Not the best team or offense we're going to play..

I know one thing. Jumper can't shed a block to save his life....
