Rashaan Gaulden calls Bob Shoop "Rain Man."

The Dustin Hoffman movie the 21-year-old Tennessee redshirt sophomore safety references is about seven years older than he is. However, Gaulden knows enough about it to compare Shoop's uncanny ability in film sessions to recall applicable NFL and college football plays from years past to Raymond Babbitt's memory of the placement of blackjack cards.

"That's the way I see it," Gaulden said of Tennessee's first-year defensive coordinator. "I don't understand how someone can have that mental capacity for the game of football and just have that understanding to where a play happened five years ago and you can pull it up and know exactly what play it is and be able to show us. It's just that mental capacity he has that is just ridiculous. I really don't know what to say about it."

...in Shoop, the Vols believe they have a true coaching savant, someone who can take UT to the SEC championship game with the force of his intellect.

"He has a beautiful mind," sophomore linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. said.

A long read but definitely good info. It will be fun to watch this D particularly since we have the experienced people and depth to attack and not always be in prevent mode.

I just hope he isn't doing work for a imaginary CIA operative part time.

Shoop has the potential to be the best hire in modern UT history. I haven't been this excited over a coordinators hire since Cut was brought back.

Same here, there is that part in the back of my mind that worries, but I think he's gonna rock.

Go watch some Penn State highlights and it will put your mind at complete ease. Those PSU defenses barely had half of our talent and he had them playing lights out football.

Shoop is as close to a sure thing homerun hire as you'll get. I can't wait to see how dominant our D is going to be Thursday. I will be shocked if Appy State scores more than 17 on us.

Here's to not being worried about 3rd & long and 4th & 14.

I worry! On the 4Th and 14, the Defensive call was correct, pressured the qb from the pocket, AND had three, 3, THREE!! defenders within 3 yards of the receiver only for ALL 3 , THREE defenders to fall or stumble is something other than coaching.. Football is a weird game man and I will always worry. GBO

I just hope we keep healthy defensive tackles all season. I want Shoop playing with every card in the deck, instead of using his beautiful mind to cover deficiencies due to attrition.
