As I saw this today, with Merriman tackling players from about 8 different teams on the same play to the beat of the Braveheart soundtrack, it occurred to me that there is something a little strange about having a guy who was suspended for taking performance enhancing drugs last year as the shining example of defensive football performance.

Does anybody else see an issue here?

i thought that as well, but then i figured out it was a Nike commercial, so I just changed the channel.

It is pretty funny that Bonds gets blown up for roids, though nothing has been proven. But, Merriman has a positive test and is still a big face for the NFL.

It really is a double standard. I also think it has to do with the fact that public perception of the NFL is more apathetic towards things like cheating, while a lot of MLB fans are traditionalists and purists who like to remember the days when cheating didn't exist, and the game was the game (uh, right).

Merriman and Castillo should be criticized a lot more than they have been. Merriman never even apologized after he tested positive and then talks sh*t about people who criticize him.

People only care about steroids when it comes to baseball players, and even then they really don't care that much until a record is about to be broken.

Merriman's story is well documented, but I guess my problem with it was from an advertising point of view. My initial thought wasn't about his shoes, but rather, "So that's what a little juice can make you do."

Castillo apologized and has a clause in his contract that if he fails another test, he'll pay back a large sum of money. He did the best possible thing one could do (other than not cheating in the first place). Castillo has my respect

Merriman rip away

I know Castillo's story and I guess he has been criticized a fair amount, especially around the combine and draft, but he did what should be done in his situation.

I said the same thing about Merriman in an earlier thread and got blasted for talking like that about him. Joke of a commercial

this may be because merriman doesn't have the all time td record or something ala bonds homerun record. Still, I believe merriman shouldn't be glorified this much...

Thats because I don't think it should be up to you to tell me which commercials I do and don't like. I like the commercial. Not because it has Merriman in it or that he took steroids. I just thought it was a cool commercial.

The idea of the commercial is awesome, the Stephen Jackson one is pretty cool.

The commercial I saw had both of them. Merriman tackled everybody going one direction, then Jackson ran over them coming from the other.

I simply found it odd to choose Merriman as the centerpiece of that marketing campaign given his recent history.

Yeah I've seen them spliced together and then again as two seperate commercials.

It is odd, but in the long run, he was punished by missing 1/4 of the season.

Did anyone else happen to notice how much it seems that Merriman has shrunk since his roids episode???

I think he looks signifigantly less muscular. Still beefed up, but nothing like before, and his play is showing it.

I sorta noticed this, but just dismissed it as skepticism on my part. But now that there is two of us...
