2) The SEC bias is a little strong in here. No one respects the superiority of the SEC more than me, but the 98 Southern Miss defense was loaded. Adalius Thomas, DeQuincy Scott, Patrick Surtain, TJ Slaughter, Daleroy Stewart and John Nix are were all NFL players.
But this is not Kentucky, its a Rich Rodriguez coached offense. There is no doubt that RR is, 10 years later, considered one of the top offensive coaches in college football.
And for as superior as Tennessees DL was in 98, Rodriguez spread offense would have neutralized it.
Tennesees 98 defense was not as good as Southern Miss defense in 98 or Brigham Youngs 98 defense and Tulane scored plenty on them.
We had 2 futre Pro-Bowlers and too many NFLers to even list on our defense. As many total Pro Bowl appearance as USM had NFLers, LOL.
Excellent, but to be fair no Tennessee QB other than Peyton Manning has had a better NFL career than King.Guys....I know that we all want to defend Tennessee against all manners of insults and put downs but arguing against this one man's comment or anyone who suggests that he may have a point, is as pointless as Shaun King's pro football career.
A couple of things...
1) RR is a big time coach and has been courted everyone from Alabama and Michigan which are elite programs. He played in 4 consecutive New Years Day bowls when he left for Michigan and only USC can match that record during that time.

3) Tulane 98 was (I believe) one of the 20 highest scoring offenses of all-time in D-1A college football. The idea that it is some insult to Tennessee to suggest that Tulane would have been able to put points on the board is not legitimate.
I am quite certain that Oklahoma was similarly as confidant going up against Boise State and Georgia was as confidant going up against West Virginia or as Alabama was last season vs Utah. underdogs do win, and Tulane 98 was as good as any of those teams.

Tulane should just stick to... Oh yeah, they're not good at anything. I think Wofford had a lot of wins last year, maybe they could have beaten UF.But this is not Kentucky, its a Rich Rodriguez coached offense. Sorry man. I've got respect for Wofford...good program.Go easy on my alma mater...we didn't talk any trash here (but we did scare the piss out of Spurrier and co).
Seriously though...the Furman and Citadel defenses that we beat last year were every bit as good as Southern Cal's. Wofford should've had a shot at them in the Rose Bowl...silly classifications keep robbing us of that chance.

I'm well aware of Rich Rodriguez's credentials... I saw my fair share of WVU football games under him, and while the novelty of New Years day bowl games is cute... in 04 the Gator Bowl was about as valid as the Peach Bowl when referencing all January bowl games as big time. Without Pat White and Steve Slaton he has been a slightly above average coach.
I believe someone else already covered the validity of listing all of those players as part of the 98 Southern Miss defense...
The following UT players from the 1998 defense made it to the NFL...
DB Fred White
DB Deon Grant
DL Bill Duff
LB Al Wilson
LB Corey Terry
LB Raynoch Thompson
DE Shaun Ellis
DT Darwin Walker
LB Shane Elam
LB Eric Westmoreland
DE Bernard Jackson
DE Will Overstreet
DT Fred Weary
Tulane would have come in third last year, so I doubt that they are in the top 20 all time... Im sure I could do some research if anyone really wanted to know.
No argument here, but I'm of the opinion that confidence is generally a good thing. And while Zabransky/King is probably a fine comparison, I don't see an Ian Johnson on Tulane's roster.
