Setting yourself up to fail

As best I can tell the UT fans have not failed at all. Maybe the title should instead say.. to be disappointed.

I have been at this point for about 5 years now. I used to live and die with every play/every game. When we would lose I would be crushed and very angry. I would never miss a game if I could not make it in person I would for sure plan my day around watching. Now if I am home I will watch but don't plan my whole day around them anymore. Every game where the opponent is average to good I always just assume UT will lose.

Losing causes apathy

We have the luckiest athletic department in the history of college football. No matter how inept they have managed it or how many games we lose 102,000 fans not only show up but paint the damn stadium checkerboard with their shirts! Name a school that would support what we have seen here these last few years the way this fan base has? Go ahead....I'm waiting.....

No kidding. And then soon afterward, when the football team has laid an egg yet again, folks will flood onto volnation to cry about what an awful fanbase our poor coach has to deal with.

For the past several years, especially the last two, I have been like a lot of other Vols fanatics in my wishful thinking. Even though my brain tells me otherwise, I have let my emotions override my common sense and fall into that trap of thinking we can win these games. I get all excited thinking this is the game that we turn it all around, bust that seal and get over the hump! Then bam! I get crushed and wishing that I had never got sucked back in and regretting that I let myself ever get invested in this insane BS again. I go into a funk refuse to watch espn, read anything football related, etc. only to get slowly drawn back in and it starts all over again.

Not any more. I refuse to do it any longer. I'm simply refusing to set myself to fail.

We may or may not win another game this season. Thats the only way I can look at it.

Hi, my name is FLSTF-VOL, and I'm a Tennessee Vol fan....

Yep, but yet people are supposed to be positive when things are going bad. That's not how it should work and it won't with most of the sane UT fans. I'm never alright with a loss, screw the process. This team is plenty good enough to be sitting at 4-1 if not for coaching errors on the offensive side of the ball.

It's funny. Most thought this would be a 5-7 or 6-6. On paper that's what we appeared to be before the season started. Seems like once the season starts we think with our heart more than our head. On paper we're still right were we should be. Defensively we're ahead of where we should be.

There are a lot of teams out there exceeding "expectations". Why can't UT fans be frustrated when we know that there was more than a good shot of exceeding some of our own fans and staring 4-1 in the face? That's why I'm not a fan of preseason predictions. Nobody thought UK, Ole Miss and MSU were gonna be where they're at.

On Sunday through Friday I'm a realist who knows where we are as a team. I know full well that we are a 5-6 win team. However when Saturday comes around I get up all excited and expect that my team will find a way to win. Otherwise there is no point watchingthe game.

Honestly, although there are not as many Ky fans as UT fans, that team has been horrible for decades upon decades and they always draw very well. About 60k per game, 29th in the country last year, won 2 freakin games.

That being said, I'm fully on board with your post.

We honestly had a good shot at winning 7 games this year until the egg they laid in the 4th qtr vs Florida. Now some of the momentum is gone and the math doesn't work.

Pro tip..try not to let a teams performance on the field, good or bad, be a personal reflection of yourself in real life..

In before someone corrects grammar...Well... Well.. said FL neighbor

Did you honestly think that when Vegas set the over/under on the number of wins for us at 5.5 that they did this cause they hate us???

Just curious what did they set Kentucky, both Mississippi' s and Arkansas number to?

Ummmm no. Losing to a very crappy UF team by one and at home is no where near where we should be in our hearts or on paper. Outside of that game you make a good point.

A young, developing O line is the biggest issue, imho. A top-shelf offensive lineman in the S.E.C. is the hardest position on the roster at which to excell. Added strength, timing, and technique all take time. Usually, the top O lines consist of 3rd, 4th, and 5th yr players. These kids are getting their "baptism of fire" early, but, it will pay dividends, sooner rather than later. These young guys are still growing; physically and mentally. Opponents had better beat TN this year 'cause we're going to be hard to handle starting the next year or two. Just wait....

I hear you. I knew coming into the season it would be a rough one. Despite the opinion of many other posters who think we should just smile and clap while we lose, it is hard to watch.

I could seriously get over it if i didnt have to hear all the crap from these in state bandwagon Gator Bama etc. Fans! Thats what drives me crazy! Because i care too much!
