1. First 3 drives aside, did the Oline look that bad? From reading everyone’s opinions, it seems like they must have been terrible. But I thought that JG had all day to throw and our back up RB averaged 6 yds/carry. Legit, I was drinking and am curious if i just wasn’t paying attention to how bad it was. But I only saw him get hit once after the first couple drives.

To me, it wasn’t elite play (way to many times the d was unblocked and our RBs ran strait into them), but something decent enough to build off of considering it was the first game of the season with a brand new offensive scheme. Assuming JG was accurate (he was) and had plenty of time to throw (I thought he did)... why didn’t helton have him throw more? Were we just trying to slow the game down? Or am I wrong about this...? To me, JG wasn’t Grier, but he was right on the mark and our receivers were making all the catches and getting YAC

I can’t stomach rewatching the game with a sober mind so relying on VN to help me out here... I would like to think it will get better by game 4 vs UF, but I also remember the 45-14 (could have been worse too) shellacking that ole miss handed Kirby smart at UGA on game 4 of his first year so I’m trying to temper myself.

The first two drives were absymal. After that I thought they looked much better. The pass protection was actually significantly improved over what we've seen the last 4 or 5 years. I think the run blocking still needs some work. Most of our big runs were on plays that bounced to the outside. I think using a FB/HB as a lead blocker would help with that tremendously. I thought that's what we were going to.

i think this is real offensive identity vs actual offensive identity. pruitt and helton gotta realize we are a pass to set up the run type team this year. once our passing game got going, the running lanes opened up some for the rbs. at times where the passing game was working, we got conservative. on blitzes, they didnt seem to trust taking shots deep, which we should have

We looked soft as hell in the middle. Center and guards got manhandled especially early on. It did get better as the game went on

not sure play calling was an issue. i think they started off with an aggressive mindset. but 2nd and 9+ that leads to 3rd and 9+ hamstrings play calling quite a bit.

i heard so many fans in the stands bemoaning hte draw on 3rd and 22 from the 10. just dumb fans.

to me, i think you saw what this offense was all about in the 2nd qtr. that's what they want it to look like.

stay on schedule, get 1st downs, and make the defense back off a little bit. can't do that if you're behind the chains on early downs.

saip, but i also think the O line was taken off guard by the looks/stunts WVU's front made early on. we had no idea who to block, and no way to get ouf what we were in. that's just inexperience on the OLine and qb. they'll have to get better at all the pre snap stuff.

Agreed ,that wss the one part early on had me banging my head on the tv.Seems we kept running the same run play rite at the same hole and get stuffed every single time.Would have liked to see sum outside stuff etc.3 n 4 I remember them running a draw rite smack dab thru the middle for nothing.Frustrating but those are just growing pains, hopefully they learn from it and move on.

It certainly didn't help that Jordan looked like he was running for the dog pile instead of around it. I guess a disadvantage of being short is you can't always see the holes and squirt through them. He had some nice runs though. I just remember a time or two that he just seemed to have no ability to cut back and find another gap.

In the first quarter, our line looked as bad as last season. Couldn't pass-protect, and couldn't establish any running lanes. Couldn't stop WVU's nose tackle from joining our huddle. Couldn't keep edge rushers (particularly on the right side of our line) from turning the corner.

The pass protection improved significantly in the 2nd quarter and through the rest of the game. Their DLine was still collapsing our OLine back, so the line of contact was usually a good two yards on our side of the line of scrimmage. But the pocket held from that point, most of the time. And I even saw good, established running lanes twice in the second half.

So it got better. It never got great. But it got better.

We'll need more against SEC defenses.

Helton was really bad in both halfs, imo. We shouldn't have given the ball back to them at the end of the 2nd quarter without going for it, b/c we had the MO, their D was gassed, couldn't cover Callaway...and they were gonna have the ball back to start the 3rd.

Then later the 3rd and 4 where we shoulda passed it and we ran it?

Then the 4th and 2 debacle thrown out of the end zone? We had to score at least 3 there, because we woulda been down 16 and would have been in an onsides kick mode at that point...

BUT givng the ball back at the end of the 2nd--that is where we lost the game. Momentum is college football.

They still likely woulda lost it with their Ofensive talent, but that is where it ended...then the weather gods frowned on us, they came out of the delay on fire, game over, donezo.

Side note: Do we ever play a big game without some kind of special circumstance?
