Serious Question about the D-Line moving forward.....

A good true freshman can be an immediate help in any position in my opinion.

So true, Clemson, Bama, UF, and UGA routinely start true freshman at positions all over the field, including QB.

Big question mark. Going to be a few years before we can fix that i'm afraid. They will have some bigger bodies in there so we'll see.

@MSME Vol

Harris based on what I’m seeing moved back.

Cox I don’t absolutely see in this class. Could be but idk. For a 3-4 base this is a lot of size and depth for a defense that will line up OLB at de some too.

Anybody see any concerns in the D-Line next year we are taking a big hit. I feel like we are a dominant D-line away from being a top 20 defense next year especially with the potential Linebacker Haul in recruiting. Tell me what you guys think, over and out and Go Vols!!!.
Yes, major concerns. We have only one DT, Golden, that I feel good about. And no stud DEs/OLBs to rush the passer. Taylor is decent but woefully inconsistent and Deandre Johnson has flashed but has a long way to go. We’re gonna have to have 5-6 guys come out of nowhere and suddenly become outstanding SEC defensive players, and that ain’t likely.

Next years DL will surprise a lot of folks. I believe that it will be much better than most think. Gooden has the POTENTIAL to be a 1st round pick. There are others coming in that have plenty of size and ability. It will really depend on if they want to work hard enough to become a solid contributor.
Who? Who are the others? Only Emmitt Gooden showed flashes of very good play last year at DT. There are no other players who have proven anything at DT and our pass rushers at OLB have either shown very little to nothing or great inconsistency.....and that’s beyond concerning. Kinda hard to feel good about hoping guys “surprise people” next year.

3 seniors last year. Leading the charge. We were 53rd in rush defense. Not good...not terrible either!

However, that stat is a skewed.
Offensively...we were ranked 70th in 3rd down conversion! AND...118th in tackles for loss allowed!
That means there were more opportunities to play offense against our defense game to game and that were were losing ground which meant the other team was gaining field position.
What I'm ultimately saying is, last year our defense was considerably better than it showed at times. A BRAND NEW defense at that.

No, I'm not very concerned about the available talent on DL. We have some big bodies there. Gooden, Williams, Emerson, Harris, Solomon are all 300 pounders.
And we have 3 senior LBs that are more familar with our defense.

We have to fix our offense.... And we have average lineman that are made to look worse because of terrible QB play.

Hopefully some of the guys who played sparingly this past fall did so because they had them in a different S&C and diet regimen to be ready this year. That or there was literally nothing behind a pretty weak Sr class.

Total D jumped from the 80's in 2017 to 49 in 2018. Lots of improvement on defense it seems, pretty much nothing on offense. D-line is the least of the teams concerns.
