Serious question about DW

That’s actually not true. Just seems like it because so many are moving here.

Actually, it is true - the actually negative drops were in drop was in 2021 and 2022, but the yearly growth rate started to decline in 2017. A slight rise started back in 2023. They are still not back to level of growth they were seeing in the 2008 - 2015 where they were adding over 300K folks per year.

You just proved yourself wrong. Growth, no matter how small, is not “leaving in droves”

This is not a pile on post about DW. This is a serious question. Why do so many people feel like he is the best AD we have ever had? I’m not saying he is or isn’t just wondering why so many feel this way.
He’s not. He just followed 3 of the worst AD’s we’ve ever had and hired a football coach that wasn’t totally incompetent like the previous 3.

He somehow gets credit for the men’s basketball and baseball programs.

For sure. Maybe my perception of California is outdated but years ago it seemed like the place people wanted to live.
It still is. Unfortunately, the rest of the state is judged by Los Angeles and San Francisco/Oakland. Southern California is still awesome and so is the Bay Area outside of San Francisco and Oakland. There are also other great areas to live in the state as well.

There are some nuts out there though but there always have been.

That being said, I have been everywhere in the U.S. as well as the rest of North America and some other parts of the world. To me, it doesn’t get any better than TN (not including Memphis).

It is, because those sports pay the bills while you whiners haven’t made the baseball program profitable! Until it is you don’t have much to talk about while the other 2 you mentioned pay for it. Next time call up and tell him you will give a couple of mil and he can maybe stack that on top of the 3 million already being made by TV! God I wished our UT fans weren’t so stupid, maybe I need to stay off here so you all don’t prove how dumb some of our fans or proven today a lot of our fans are.
SYBAU. that is all.

Greatest is yet to be determined but you have a valid point about it being relative.

They actually lost population in 2021 and 2022 - losing 379K in 2021.

All states should be growing due to births and every state except for Vermont, West Virginia and Mississippi have a positive percentage growth each year.

There are trends for growth and California's growth trend implies people were leaving. There were trending well over 300k each year, then the growth rate began to drop ... 244K then to 188K then to 99K then to 147 then to 84K then to -379K, then -151K, then 56K and last year added 233K.

A state with close to 40 million people should be adding a lot of people just due to natural growth.

Edited to add 2020 was the Covid year, that accounts for the 84K. But most states started to rise again in 2021 - California plummeted.

Checked on Tennessee's growth because I was curious - Tennessee actually had its largest growth ever in 2020 when everyone else was seeing a decline in their growth rate.

San Francisco and Oakland are two of my favorite places I have lived. I grew up in Memphis.

You also have to take in effect that hundred of thousands of illegals were dropped into New York, Illinois and California. If all were removed the population for all those states would drop like a rock!

I think this is the answer - everyone is looking at football only.

And because he is good at the "everything school" and taking credit for success where the former ADs actually did make good choices in other sports - it seems like he is responsible for bringing success everywhere.

And a lot of the renovations we are seeing, at least in Neyland, were planned before he arrived.

I think some of the perception of his skill has been distorted by two coaches on campus he did not hire running the most stable and successful programs. Certainly, Danny has had a role to play in helping those programs along the way, so I won’t write him off and say he has had no role in that success.

He’s obviously a great businessman that has exceptional skills in raising money and is probably well-suited to the NIL/rev share era of college athletic where dollars and cents matter the most, but the jury is still out, IMO, on his ability to identify coaching talent.

Danny has been great for Tennessee, but some of his comments in the presser today, his robotic personality, and his challenges with maintaining relationships gives me pause about the future. I think Team Danny has just as much delusion as Team Tony (I include myself in that) because they will excuse everything Danny does.

Good! Excited about the new challenge, quite a bit of traveling and unfortunately not as much time to be a good brethren up in here, but things will slow down ROY, so I’m looking forward to being around for what’s next…where are you these days?
New York. Still trying to get back to CA.

A lot of things one must buy is significantly higher in California. My niece lived out there for a couple of years - when gas was $3 here it was $6 there. Everything costs more.
my wife went to high school in the Bay Area. My in-laws’ 1500 square foot, 1950’s era house sold for $1 million before they even had a sign in the yard. And that was 20 years ago.

Maybe CTV will hire me as an assistant so I can finally get back out there.
