I am considering going to the Vandy series this year, but my question is just how bad is the annoying "Vandy Whistler" in person ? It's pretty bad on tv, but maybe not as bad in person ?

Just as bad in person; maybe worse. Honestly, though, I find the other smug Vandy fans even more annoying. Not a reason to skip it, though!

I assure you @JustDave45 he is just as bad or worse. When wife had season tickets to vandie baseball games (she worked there), I went to several games at field. It's ear-splitting & obnoxious...so is the whistler.
