The continual slide toward mediocrity at UT under this regime could not be more stark to all observers as we wake up on the morning after. The talent just isn't there like it used to be. The coaching, for some reason, has regressed at a steady clip for 7 years, to the inexcusable debacle we watched last night.

All the while, Fulmer and his minions hatched a new deal which leaves Volnation no options. Imagine this scenario for the remainder of the season: go on to lose to Fla, Aub, UGA, and Bama, to close October at 3-5, 1-4 in league play. Then, like always, Fulmer "recovers" to beat the hapless of the East, goes to the Music City to beat a midling Big10 team, and finishes 8-5. Amazingly, he will receive an extension for this "quality season" by Mr. Hamilton.

This is the new reality at UT....while Florida, Georgia, and Bama all continue to strengthen and separate.

I think that's a powerfully truthful statement that was hard to read, even harder to accept, but couldn't have been more right.

I have only one problem with this post...we'll beat a middling ACC team, not Big Ten.

Makes me freaking sick to think about it. Fulmer needs to leave. Yes, he's been a great coach for us and Im not denying that. The game has passed him up, and he sucks.

I watched both teams play this weekend and I do not get that same warm fuzzy feeling you do. At this point, Bama by 21+.

i know what your saying, surely we'll beat one those four teams, bama, gators, AU, GA. i'm looking at bama since they probably have the weakest QB and it's at home. that and i think clemson was soooo overrated. but you're probably right, if our DB's play 12 yards from the receivers again, they'll make JP wilson look like a heisman canidate again.

True...I mean, I'd throw him a party. I'm not mad considering what he's done. But if last night was any indicator, Fulmer's like that uncle that you see around the holidays that drinks too much that everyone tries to avoid and he won't take the hint

I agree with most of this post. I do, however see alot of talent on this team. I've seen alot of talent on some of the past teams. I really do not believe the coaching staff has been able to get the most out of the players. It looks like the coaching staff has lost a step and that loss has shufflued the Vols from a top tier SEC team to a middle of the pack team. They tried to revamp the coaching staff this year by bringing in an OC from Richmond. Right now,it looks like they tried to seal the leak in the dam with bubble gum. The main thing that concerned me from the OC was the apparent inability to make adjustments throughout the game. The way the game is played now, this is a necessity especially in close games. When you look at it, where are the strengths of this team? Offense? Defense? QB play? Line play (offense or defense)? Special teams? Based on the UCLA game it does not look like we have strengths we can rely on.
All in all, it looks like another long season for the Volnation with middle of the pack results.

This past week 1/2 the teams lost. This was our first loss and thats always the hardest. They will adjust for the short passing game or we will have a longggg season. The punter being suspended did not help and he is out for the UF game as well. SO get your pens ready for that one.

You just explained to terms of phil's new contract. He might have a hard time getting to those eight wins though.

Welcome to the VN.

Yes, 1/2 the teams lost... but I can't think of one, save maybe Texas A&M, who lost while enjoying such a physical mismatch in talent and athleticism. Cunningham wasn't the problem on the blocked punt, the blocking scheme was.

Sadly, I agree... we have fallen into the mediocrity like michigan, florida st, miami, nebraska, and other once powerhouses of the nation have went. If we are 1-3 after september what happens??? If we have another 05 season does anything happen, or do we continue to slide into mediocrity like we are starting to do.

My observation was that we had plenty of talent, but no ability to execute. That, to me, falls squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff. Who the hell is supposed to be working with Crompton on his mechanics anyway. Oh, and if we can't pass block against UCLA, Crompton's in for a looooooong season in SEC play.

first of many! Crompton evidently has not started the last few years cause he sucks!!!!!!

If Crompton doesn't learn to take a hit or maintain composure when there are defenders coming at you, then the SEC games are going to be tough.

It's going to be another rough year. How are things going to change with the new contract? Above average is not good enough. I want to have hope again!

This morning-after feels like you would after seeing your wife walk down the street with someone else. I think the problem, and it may be inherent in any forum like this, is we sit around and analyze this ad nauseum and we all start to believe our own bullcrap; because we want to believe it. Then the game finally rolls around after 6-8 months of drinking our kool-aid and it's like a baseball bat to the face. Any time we hear anything that doesn't adhere to the party line, i.e. Corso or Herbstreet, we go off about what biased fools they are. The sad truth is they are a lot closer to reality than most of us are. I am right there with everybody. There is a sense of sad resignation now. Does Fulmer need to move on? Yes. Do we as a program need to move on to progress? Definitely. But will that happen? Very unlikely. Hamilton and the big donors are too close to Fulmer personally to do what needs to be done. Making changes in the coaching staff like they have done is like putting a band-aid on when you are having a heart attack. If they had any sense they would offer the job to Norm Chow right now and tell him he could start today. Same story--new year.:cray:

Sorry for your loss, really, I was pulling hard for you guys. My question is Why was there so much pressure on Crompton? You had a line that allowed 4 sacks against the SEC for an entire season last year!!! Not taking anything away from UCLA but surely they aren't any better than some of the teams you guys played last season. Am I offbase here?

You will have to excuse my typing and probably my spelling at this point in time as I will probably miss a couple of mistakes due to extreme anger that is making my body shale right now...first off let me make it clear, I love Tennessee football, It is one of the things in my life that keeps me driven, Like many have said it is a religion...what I saw last night made me sick to my stomach...I wanted and waited for this season to start because of all the excitement surrounding the new offensive cord and the new sets and a nasty defense and yet what I saw was a team that would have struggled with Charlston Southern...I personally have been one of Fulmers biggest defenders but after what I witnessed last night, no more...Thats it, I fully support a change...And not just him, Get Clawson out of there as well and Chavis...These guys have been around long enough to know what to do and they can't do it or won't do it and its making us look like idiots and making a last resort QB who was scared out of his wits look like Joe Montana...This new OC is nothing but smoke and mirrors, Same old plays but different sets...Nothing more nothing less...I sat at a bar with friends who support other teams, Gators, Canes etc and they all felt sorry for me as We watched Fulmer stand there, Chewing his gum with no emotion on his face...Only time was when UCLA scored that late TD...Clawson looked like he had never coached a game in his life...I see one of the biggest massacres in UT history coming in neyland on sept 20th and I can't stand to say that...It's so hard to try and be positive right now, I saw nothing good about this team, the vaunted secondary was torched in the 2nd half...I don't know what else to say, My entire season is completely ruined because of this one game...I just can't ge excited now....Sorry to be so negative but its how I feel...It's time for a change.

To be honest, right now I think every SEC East team can beat this team, and half of the West at least.

Georgia, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama at this point I think are almost definite losses, though obviously anything can happen. South Carolina could definitely be a loss, and who knows at this point about Vandy and Kentucky. Miss. St. doesn't appear to have much but I still think they'll be a tough win.

I think this team is staring straight on at the best ending 7-5.

If it makes you feel any better there's thousands and thousands of Vol fans who feel your pain, self included.

The TN team I saw last night will lose to KY and struggle against Vandy.

Ainge knew when to get rid of the ball. There, I said it.
