Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Yeah I’m stuck on him too.

He’s the first 3-phase boss of the game. You have to go through 2 deathblows, then he turns into a god-like version of himself that hurls lighting bolts.

Crazy.
Yeah when I saw that he only had 2 deathblows at the beginning I was like I don't believe you lol. I got to his second phase and got him to half health, but I need to get better at timing during phase 1 and then redirecting the lightening in phase 2.

I don’t know how I’m ever going to beat Genichiro. I can get to his 3rd phase, but when I do my resources are all dried up and I get wrecked.

I’m at a loss here.

No but I think I may just go grind until I can get it. Seems to be the most effective way to beat him.

Get it. He never blocks it so you just need to learn at what points in time during the fight it is good to use so you don't get hit by him. You can also try to do a parry battle with him where you attack, parry his attack, attack, parry his attack, etc. A friend told me that's how he did it and it skyrockets his posture really quickly. I'm also going to try using the sugars. I haven't used them yet so I have some to burn.

Also, I've heard that having one of the big skills (like Shadow Rush) will help you with getting another skill tree later on in the game.

I don’t notice hardly any difference when I use the sugars.

Parry battle is how I’ve been trying to beat him, but to no avail. I can use that technique to get through his two phases, but by the time I’ve gotten to the third phase I’ve used my healing gourds and I get destroyed.

How many gourd uses do you have? I have 6.

Yeah I typically can get through his first phase with just 2 gourd drinks. But, his second phase with the lightening...lets just say that phase is really frustrating. Last night I parried his lightening 3 times in a row and neither hit him even though I was locked on to him. I may just try to dodge him from here on out during that phase.

After another 1.5 hours of trying I finally beat him! Holy crap that was so satisfying lol

Genichiro?

Yeah. I got close a few times beforehand. I just decided to go on the offensive and stop playing too defensive. Getting better at parrying really helped out. I also decided to stop trying to deflect his lightening attacks and just dodge them.

Did you use shadow rush?

I used both tricks. The first two deathblows I relied more on being aggressive while parrying everything he does excluding arrow shots. When I stayed up on him he did his jump-then-thrust move a lot which allows you to mikiri counter during the thrust part bringing a good chunk of posture damage to him each time. Then, when he goes lighting I just did the same thing while including as much shadowrush as possible (when I know I could hit him with it) while also dodging his lightening attacks. I also got some successful mikiri counters on him when he would do his large jump thrust move.

This video really helped me with the parry trick:

Sweet mother of God I pulled it off.

Great call on shadow rush, though I was roasting through spirit emblems using it with the jump attack so I just saved them for his 3rd phase (I literally had to go remove it from my inventory so I didn’t accidentally use it).

Man my adrenaline was through the roof. He and I were both down to a sliver of health.

Bring on the rest of the game, I’m fired up now :)

Haha I probably jumped in the air about 10 times when I beat him. Yeah, I'm man enough to admit that lol. My adrenaline was high as well (hands were shaking a little at the end).

The game really opens up now. Where are you headed? I'm at the Buddha Temple region right now.

Y’all are so far ahead of me lol. I just got excited because I beat Lady Butterfly and Gyoubu the Demon. My adrenaline was high as well. Right at the end when you know you’re a few hits away.. you really start praying they don't land a ko on ya lol.

Hah when I dealt the second deathblow to Gyoubu I didn't know you had to press the attack button again. He got out of it because I put the controller down lol.

I spammed r1 until he was dead. Lmao. I was making sure nothing happened. I beat the blazing bull. Actually wasn’t bad if you just chase him in a circle and wait for an opening with the firecrackers.

When you all come across O’rin of the Water, let me know. I’ve got the cheesiest cheese that ever cheesed for her 😁😁😁

Man the bull gave me fits. That's when I played way more defensively.

And I have no idea where O'rin is, but will let you know lol. Just beat Senpou Temple last night and am now in the Sunken Valley.

Evidently there's a lot of scuttle-butt about the difficulty. Gamers are crying that From Software needs to include an "easy mode." Is this game any harder than the Souls game or Bloodborne? I don't remember so many people whining about how hard those games were.

Maybe they should get better? Every boss has a weakness and you have to figure it out. I have gotten stuck so many times yet I think the game can be pretty fluid once you grab a hold of how the game should be played. Plus, most (if not all) of them can be cheesed in some way or another.

From Software did this game just right, though.

Edit: Also, I don't mean any of this at you. Just those whining about the difficulty.

Time to buy it, then.

How many gigantic bosses are in it? I do so poorly against them in the Dark Souls games (Midir and Demon in Pain/Demon From Below took me probably 40 tries combined) while humanoid bosses were always easy for me. Got Sir Alonne, Gael, and Soul of Cinder on my first tries.
