i dont know maybe the lawmakers in each state are starting to see their power slipping away. i believe there is a little selfishness involved.i agree with the premise but it is nothing more than a dog and pony show until they decline federal money.

There is a certain irony that the last time states actually seceeded was to some degree based on the slavery issue and an African-American is now president and at least a couple are making the symbolic statement of sovereignty.

Go ahead and say it - it's racism.

got to try the racist angle even though replacing African-American with Socialist would have made more sense

I believe the count is now at 30. I assume math isn't your strong point.

I would feel better if I thought these symbolic statements were more about regaining states rights rather than state politicians feeling the erosion of their power.

Who in these states is making that claim?

Somehow I saw this coming.

This is nothing but stupid political BS.

Does anyone take this seriously?

If it were just one state alone it would mean very little. The fact is that government is expanding at an astounding rate and has been for some time. Our federal government over the years has made it a common practice to step over the line our constitution has set for it. This is jsut another state to send the message that the people and states are watching and not impressed.

I would agree that this posturing means little unless the states themselves are ready to back up the rhetoric with action. In light of recent events I would say that action such as this is needed if we want our union to remain strong.

What do you mean?

What do you mean?

I in no way meant "action" to involve any kind of armed conflict, only that these states will need to back up their rhetoric by refusing federal money and rejecting government regulation. Until a state takes it to this level it really means nothing.

I don't understand your question.

I will give you an example. In Texas I am required to wear a seat belt while driving my 7,500 lb truck. However, I can ride my 600 lb motorcycle without any protective gear whatsoever. The reason for this, other than the idiot lawyers meeting in Austin, is that the feds threatened to cut off federal highway funds for any state that did not enact a seat belt law.

They may tell you to wear a seat belt but do they describe the penalty? The Feds did the same thing with speed limits during the Carter years. The great state of Tennessee mandated that it was a two dollar fine that would not be placed on your record if you were caught speeding in excess of 55 mph but less than 76mph. Honor was served, the damn yankee law was observed, and the highway funds kept flowing.

They do. Not less than $100 nor more than $200.
