And I am not saying M. Johnson is going to be getting All-SEC nods or anything, but his play is being very poorly evaluated by most posters on here. He has not gotten beat that many times. It was stated earlier, the bust against USM was Berry's fault for being in the wrong coverage. He misplayed Harvin and got beat. But, for all the speed that Harvin has Johnson was with him step for step and Tebow made a great throw and Harvin made a difficult catch. He is going to be a solid CB, maybe never spectacular though.

Agreed. Berry is not catching near as much flak and he gave up a long TD pass by misplaying the ball in the air.

Berry has made just as many if not more mistakes than Johnson.

You bring up a very good point. On that play and the one thrown against Berry, the execution of all of Florida's players was almost perfect. I would put money saying that sort of play will consistently happen until we find ways to make the QBs anxious in throwing by putting pressure on them. I still am baffled as to WHY there seemed to be no pressure on him. We seemed to be perfectly fine sitting back on our heels, playing conservative defense and letting Fla have their way. We weren't pressuring them into mistakes. In all fairness though, there were about 3 plays that UT had that would have been a sack against any non-mobile QB, but Tebow really did play up to his billing.

Marsalous has not been all that bad in my opinion. He and Berry had the communications error against USM (Johnson thought we were playing shell coverage with Berry over the top), but other than that, he's been solid. Nothing great, but solid. Percy Harvin is gonna beat a lot of people deep, so there is no shame in that, and let's be honest, Tebow made a perfect throw because Johnson was not in bad shape there. Considering he's been covering DeSean Jackson and Harvin, it hasn't been near as bad as it could. If I had my choice, I would probably start:

CB - Willingham
CB - Johnson
SS - Berry (with the caveat that he moves back to corner ASAP)
FS - Hefney

But my wrinkle would be to bring in Vinson to match up outside in the Nickel with Marsalous falling down to play in the slot as the fifth DB. Another thing I would love to see is for Art Evans for fit in as a potential FS prospect for next year. He's got some height and good range, which I think is essential for a Safety in today's game.

Let's see, it took the staff 3 games to switch Vinson. Your right though, Robert Meachem was definitely an all american candidate by his 4th game. Some guys just don't grasp the college game that early. That's the great thing about Urb's offense. As complicated as it is for opposing teams, it is incredibly simple for his own players.

My point was that he may not be better than Evans, but replay the Cal and Florida game. He has been beaten, maybe not alot, but it's not a good thing either to see him playing catch up to the opppsing receiver's routes and as well as being the last one to the tackles. He isn't reacting well. Maybe they are keeping him in there so we can recruit his half brother in 08', solid verbal, another WR, ugh!

Agree to disagree. He has been solid and has faced the two fastest/quickest WR's that we will see all year. He has reacted well. Getting his 3-star brother to come to UT is not at all the determing factor for him getting playing time.

To say that his play has been any worse than the rest of secondary would be false, but to call his or anyone elses play solid is just as false. In their defense any hint of a pass rush would certainly help their cause.

What would you define as solid? The QB's have had all day to throw. He has faced two players that will be 1st Rd. NFL DP's and he has covered them both with being burnt too badly. Out of those two games the worst thing he did was get beat on the Harvin deep ball which was pretty well defended. Some times you have to just give credit to the offense. Against the WR's we will face the rest of the way I think he will be fine, especially if we could get some kind of a pass rush and even remotely decent play from our "talented" LB's.

Well as you read I never mentioned that they meant to bury him on the depth chart. Yes he did bury himself and yes he has a speed factor, but when a coach from the team you recruited him from tells you that he is a better corner, then why don't you listen?? Even in fall practice when they moved him back and forth most of the praise came from him being at CB. He got a small compliment from Trooper when they simplified the playbook for both he and Kenny. So obviously he wasn't on the right side of the ball to help us win ball games if he's SOOOO good at CB like Fulmer would have you to believe. Its 4 games into the season and we still haven't evaluated our talent yet. Hopefully he will contribute Saturday on D and lets keep him over there instead of playing red rover with him.
