Second season success for Dooley?

I can't help but wonder how Coach Dooley will do during his second season in Knoxville even given all the circumstances our team has yet to overcome.

Our conference has had almost a "tradition" of second season success for new coaches.

For example:

Mark Richt, 2nd season won SEC
Les Miles, 2nd season finished 10-2
Nick Saban, 2nd season at LSU won SEC
Nick Saban, 2nd season at Alabama went to BCS game.
Gene Chizik, 2nd season won SEC and National title
Urban Meyer, 2nd season won SEC and National title
Dan Mullen, 2nd season finished with 9 wins
Houston Nutt, 2nd season at Ole Miss finished with 9 wins

I guess only time will tell when and if Coach Dooley will be on this list.

none of those coaches had the depth and experience problem that Dooley inherited. so no dooley wont win the SEC or the natl championship this year. but next year is a whole another story.

I'm bias but I feel this years squad has something very special about them. I for one feel they will be the breakout team of the year.

Dooley has an outside shot at a year two breakthrough to win the SEC East, but I don't think we have the depth and experience to go beyond that, even in the best case scenario.

Dooley wasn't totally wrong when he said that last year was year zero and this year one. Some of the factors behind the year two jump, like knowledge of the system, will be present this year, but the standard infusion of talent to put an average roster over the top is only an infusion of talent to turn a terrible roster into an average one, albeit an average one with potential.

Well, this year is just considered year one by the coaches, with last year being year zero. So by that, next year we should expect big things.

Actually, Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, and Miss. State, like USC under Carroll, OU under Stoops & Texas under Mack Brown, had far worse prior five-year performances of those programs they inherited than Dooley.

Because we all know that performance over the previous five years is the leading indicator of depth and experience.

Dooley has always said that he considers last year Year Zero, so by that measure, his second season won't happen until next year.

That's a copout. This is year two. There's no getting around it.

Ftr, I am not expecting anything more than an improved team that is competitive.

Dooley inherited both Hambone and Kiffin disasters. It is a credit to him he's salvaged the first class (actually found more contributors).

We may have an improved team that is still 6 - 6.

If we get some help on the front seven I would like to think this could be the case. I don't really do predictions but I think this team has something special about them... one more year of experience will do them well.

While I do agree you will be better I still see UT a year away. As I have done the last 3 years, I come on here in good faith not to stir the pot, but have productive, good sportsmanship post/comments. Last year I saw a team come together at the end of the year. A few missed plays here and there could have made for a better year, but that comes with maturity. I think UT is a year away because I see opposing defense understanding the strength of the QB and are now more able to plan for that strength. I hope you win all but one game this year, RTR, and we meet again in Atlanta, but I just do not think the experience will be there this year. Good luck, see ya in October. ROLL TIDE

I think there's going to be some games we take this year we aren't supposed to win. We got close last year on a few games, and most notably, with the LSU game. While no one likes to think of LSU and NC, the fact remains I think the coaching staff and the players learned some lessons. I think this year those kind of stupid mistakes disappear.

I've heard over and over from folks about some of the teams we are facing this year and how we have no chance to win this one or that one.

But this is the SEC and I know for some outside the Volnation this doesn't mean much, but we are still the Vols.

These kids didn't come to UT to roll over and be patsies and wait until next year. On top of it, I have a feeling these kids, being young, don't know they aren't supposed to win those games.

I think Dooley has more success and I think Dooley has a better team now to do it.

Could this be the "Big Kahuna---Nope, I used to post under TNBAMAFAN,but I could not remember my pass word and I changed email accounts so that threw everything into the wind. But anyway, as I have said in the past, the SEC needs a strong UT. It helps in all areas. I just think UT is another year away. RTR.

Just trying to have some good rival football talk. I am peaceful so I would appreciate it in return. Just talkin' football, no crap on this end...
