SEC: Video Review was Incorrect

Dear UT Fans, It's Not You, It's the Refs
I want to be very clear that my rantings about the play that should never have been reviewed, and the whistle that was ignored, has nothing to do with Tennessee fans and is not designed to take anything away from the Volunteers' win. They won a hard-fought, if sloppy, game. Vanderbilt fans fell burned. That it happened against Tennessee makes it a little worse, but ultimately about Commodore fans feeling they've got to beat their oppoent and the officials.

source - Vanderbilt Sports Line

hahah, Vandy whining about a call that should not have been made, a bad call that was reversed -

"On the last play of the Vanderbilt-Tennessee game, in overtime, the Tennessee defender intercepted the pass, his knee did not touch the ground and he returned the interception for a touchdown. During the play, the head linesman incorrectly ruled that the Tennessee player's knee was down when he intercepted the pass by blowing his whistle and giving the dead ball signal. The play was reviewed as if there was no whistle on the field and as a result, overturned the incorrect ruling. By rule, if there was a whistle blown, the play is not reviewable."

Overturned the incorrect ruling. case closed.

So this is what it comes down to? We have to cheat to win against Vandy at home. Sad day for TN football.

The official on the field said there was no whistle, so maybe the official who blew the whistle said he didn't blow the whistle. Not sure that the replay booth has sound...would assume so, but who knows.

boo-hoo, we were do this even if it was a mistake by the officials. It was our time. This was a big win for these players, they needed a game like this. A lot of character and confidence was likely built this evening.

We didn't cheat. The right result happened. There was an interception return and a score. We won. No knee. No fumble.

Cheat? Come on... get real. All we are guilty of is finally not getting hosed by the refs. Was the call blown? Yes... technically.... but was it really blown? H3ll no... that pick 6 did happen and should have counted.

If you ignore everything but the play on the field, we win cleanly no doubt. SEC needs to craft some new rules pertaining to acts of idiocy / lunacy committed by the refs.

Seriously, if Vandy had just sat down on the play due to a whistle being clearly blown they would have a legitimate complaint to lodge. Hate refs making calls that muddy the water.

There would have been an apology from the SEC regardless of whether it was reviewed or not. It would have just been apologizing to UT for blowing the call in saying EG's knee was down. At least this way the right call ended up counting.

I don't remember whether it was a NFL or College game I was watching last week, but it was mentioned that they didn't have audio, just videos for the replays. So it's possible.

When the ref calls an interception a fumble he is obviously on another planet. Why even have reviews, which exist only to correct wrong calls by the officials, if you aren't going to review a game changing play. It is ridiculous that all plays for scores aren't automatically reviewed as they do in the NFL. To whine that it shouldn't be reviewable misses the obvious...they blew it big time and are trying to save face!

The SEC says they screwed up the call initially. Then they screwed up by letting it be reviewed. Any sane person would call that a push. The Vandy nimrods will howl about it for the next 10 years, because that's the closest they'll be to beating us in 10 more years.

Looked like TN was celebrating during the run back before the TD. Under the new rule, I thought there was a penalty that nullified the score?

2 players hold an arm up when Gordon is a few yards away from scoring. Yeah , they should have taken the TD off the board.

Sorry we won. Looks like it ruined your night.

Chris Low on ESPN is saying that Vandy "got the short end of the stick." WTF?! Eric Gordon cleanly intercepted the ball and ran it for a touchdown while the entire Vandy squad tried to chase him down. No one on the field heard the whistle or thought the play was blown dead, including all of the other refs. It was only after the touchdown that the officials THEN came out and said, contrary to what 90k people just saw, "ball was fumbled and recovered by UT but player was down by contact." That ruling was so incredibly wrong and inane that it seemed premeditated. The fact that anyone would claim Vandy deserved to have that TERRIBLE call stand just shows that people are willing to defend absurd rules regardless of the terribly inequitable result and in flat contradiction to the basic facts of what happened. I mean, isn't the point of 'replay' to fix, not uphold, mistakes made by refs??? Common sense is dead. :banghead:

Didn't Franklin challenge a penalty on that FG attempt? I didn't know you could do that either. And basically, any ref can now just blow the whistle to stop the play dead. It's the Ref's fault and as a result, Gordon should not be penalized. That was a pick 6 and won the game. To call it back because some ref blew the whistle prematurely would hurt the game a bit.
