SEC Rankings: Defensive Backs, Vols 9th

This is the first one of these rankings I have disagreed with this year... we are definately better especially if Janzen is back

We may end up solid at DB, but most of it is unproven. 9th probably seems about right, starting out. Hard to project first year talent.

I definitely do not agree with this one...I can see Vandy possibly being slightly better than us...perhaps we should be 7th.

I understand the low ranking but don't necessarily agree with it. I know UF lost Jenkins but 8th, interesting.

So....if Janzen is back, how high does he push us?7th? 6th?

It pushes into the top half of the SEC, without question. But i'm not totally against our ranking simply because they can't project how good first year players will be, i.e., Moore and Lanier.

Postseason rankings will probably have us in the top half barring injuries.

This is the one spot I thought we'd be in the top 5 or 6

Even without Janzen I still think the secondary will be ok

This was my thought exactly until I saw multiple pre-season magazines having Jadaveon Clowney on the first team All-Sec preseason team, and ranked as a top 3 DE in the SEC already. Granted, that dude is a FREAK, but in my previous experiences with rankings, you have to wait until they do something to justify them getting the spot. So, if they can't rank us higher for "potential" with Secondary, then they can't rank Jadaveon #1 :p

This is the first one I've disagreed with, except maybe the individual WR Rankings...

I disagree.

It was God-awful last year with Janzen until Brewer started to figure out what was going on the last 4 or 5 games.

Moore should be an immediate improvement over every CB on the roster.

Coleman is one of the most talented CBs Tennessee has brought in the past 10 years.

Lanier should help out too.

The CBs that played for Tennessee last year, with the exception of flashes from Gordon and Waggner, were terrible.

9th is about right, based on last year. We'll be much improved by the end of the season, and probably be top 5.

It was god awful last year, however I'm talking about the upcoming year. We have more talent than last year. It will be improved

The list has Prentiss Waggner as the 6th best corner in the league.

No way is Waggner a top-10 corner. He had some picks last year from being in the right places at the right times, but other than that he wasn't very good.

Honestly, sometimes it scares me when Waggner's on the field.

Agree. But that list ranks individual cornerbacks. This list is taking the entire defensive backfield into account.

I've enjoyed all these threads, just wish we were ranked higher. If I recall, the best ranking we had was 5th place, but don't remember the category. Could be wrong. If an overall ranking were compiled, where do you think we'd fall. Maybe 6th or 7th? We certainly need our new guys to perform well and early if we hope to hit 8 wins in the regular season as many on this board are projecting. I'd take 7-5 + a bowl win to go 8-5. Anything over that would be super IMO.

If Janzen is back, we'll be ahead of South Carolina. First of all, we did get better over the course of the season, and we return every meaningful contributor. Also, we pick up Moore, who will immediately become the best corner on our roster. And while Waggner and Teague might've been a little scary as #1 and #2 CBs, they're a pretty strong combo as #2 CB and nickel back.

If Janzen doesn't come back, #9 is probably a fair ranking, but I wouldn't be shocked if we ended up more like #7.

Considering that they're not assuming Janzen is gone, this ranking is too low. They probably should've split the difference between the two rankings and put us around #7.
