SEC Power Rankings entering Week 0

3. Tennessee

I’m really high on the Vols this year. I love the continuity on offense, with QB Hendon Hooker, RB Jabari Small and WR Cedric Tillman all returning to Rocky Top. The coaching staff is also largely intact, with Josh Heupel and both the coordinators coming back for 2022.

That matters. So does having one of the most dynamic offenses in all of college football. The defense has some holes, but the schedule is manageable and the momentum is there for the Vols to challenge for 10 wins in 2022.

I'm a little shocked we are that high. It feels good.

It looks like we will have a good team this year. Anything is possible when you have a good team. I expect we get the player’s best and win some that we aren’t “supposed” to.

I’m looking forward to finding out how great this year’s Vols will be.

If Tennessee were to go 10-2, losing only to Bama and Georgia, not only does that set UT up to close the recruiting class with some studs, but it puts UT squarely in contention for the SEC East going into 2023. Yes, some will say, “but we lose Hooker and Tillman.” Don’t care. Heupel will have a QB and WRs ready. The defense will keep improving. One more year of added athletes and development. It would also make UT far more appealing to portal transfers, so we could plug holes that way.

Tennessee could jump back into the nation’s elite sooner than later.

Hold on now, I thought Kentucky was going 11-1 with their only loss being us, yet them beating UGA??

I'm with you DD - shocked he has us this at 3rd.
Can we challenge for 10 wins? - YES, I believe we can.

However, the BVD and pessimist in me thinks we trip up or face some injury issues and 8-4 is more likely.
But at 8-4 (9-4 with bowl game) that is still a marked improvement and sets us up nicely for 2023.

Yeah I read that Merrill and Holiday are both looking the part. If we have 3 solid wideouts and perhaps get McCoy in, we should be in good shape on the outside. We plan to use our Tight ends more this year from what I read somewhere, which is surprising that was shared considering the quietness of this group, so that should take a little off the receiver but we still need some production there. Apparently they are still feeling Velus' void there. However, Hyatt seems dedicated and who knows when Squirrel. I am beginning to feel better about this position. I didn't like we promoted am assistant to fulfill some NFL coaching calibur shoes, but my thoughts were we will see. Just didn't leave me thinking YES we are set at coaching up the unproven talent we have around Tillman and Hooker. Having Small is big, but he wasn't Evans. Evans had some enormous runs last year. Apparently the only guy we have that has that ability is a Freshman. We have had and seen many successful Freshman RBs in this conference, however. So, I am less concerned there than I am with WR and OL. I think Garner showed he will have our DL ready. Sure Butler is a huge loss, but a lot of guys in year #2 under that man. Young looks to be himself and I think Baron are looking good on the ends. Adding Juwan Mitchell should be very helpful to the LB group and apparently, the two behind them are no slacks. I think it's Beasley and Herring, but I could be wrong. Big ? Is our DBs. Haden has been out a bit and frankly he hasn't proven to be a successor of someone like Taylor. Apparently there is buzz around someone at the stat position. But who else? There are plenty of bodies that are here in year 2 of Martinez. So, I think this is a year where he could prove a lot about his coaching ability. Of course, he has already proven a lot, but if we come out with a bunch of no names and have a lock down secondary, that will be huge. I still think our biggest years are yet to come and are most likely in two years. I see us 8-5 with a bowl win dropping some hard fought close games but playing everyone close. Next year really depends on what Milton or one of these others look like after this year and perhaps Spring Ball, as well as our receivers and OL. We should have some serious depth next year. But a ? At QB leaves me wondering. We should win 10+ games by Huepel's 4th year. So, back to this year, lots of promising things in the media, lots of potential but too many unknowns for me to expect a season better than last year after losing 7 NFL calibur guys, our WR Coach. Can Tillman, Hooker, Young, Banks and Wright play like stars this year? Will Small reach stardom this year? That still only a few guys to do something that 12 NFL calibur players last year could not do. That said those guys were definitely robbed in Pitt, Ole Miss and Purdue games. Could have been 10-3. So much could happen but what should happen is we are least do as well as we did last year but show a lot more depth. I'm calling 8-5 this year, I hope we shock the world.
