SEC official's take on last night

So you must be an official or related to one. What I have found is that most officials are huge defenders and apologists for and of all other officials and contend that their brothers have never missed a call no matter what the circumstance. This included Goode. The refs in this game "raced" to allow an additional play - did not stand over the ball to allow the defense to get set and both are outside the normal procedures -- to the benefit of North Carolina and the detriment of Tennessee.

Had it been handled in a normal fashion -- time runs out and it would have been an additional five seconds or so before the ball could have been snapped.

I am an official in several different sports on the high school level and have several friends who do either major college football or basketball. For the most part we do try and stick together but when a rule is obviously not enforced or a mistake is made like was in this game we usually admit it, except of course the crew that actually fd up, they will usually never admit fault or wrongdoing. I have a friend who is a white hat for an SEC crew who I absolutely can't wait to talk to about this trash that happened and see what his point of view is!

Does it matter? as per the head guy it's all lip service anyway. I say next year we play no rules football.

Check this out (sorry if already posted):
'SEC official says different play calls may have changed Music City Bowl outcome'

..."We had probably seven officials in the room, watching the game, and we're all scratching our heads, saying, 'wait a minute, guys,'" he said.

The major question focused on UNC's snap in the final seconds of regular play.

There was confusion on the field as the kicking team began running out to attempt a field goal. Meanwhile, the offense was quickly trying to set itself to snap the ball and spike it.

"Here's what the rule says, when the offense substitutes a player, then the umpire is supposed to cover the ball and not let the ball be snapped until the defense has an opportunity to react to the substitution, so, by rule, technically, the ball probably should have never gotten snapped," Goode said. "So, is that an error, well, it could be."

Well, at least the SEC Refs are standing up for us, even if Hamilton and Slive won't.

Might as well let it go. Nothing is getting changed and they gave us the shaft twice this year. Anything happens like that again next year i might blow a gasket. It's ironic we got burned by the same rule twice, but it happened. Dooley not subbing because they lost the LSU game that way. If they had ran subs onto the field the other night, then the ref would have stood over the ball, no snap and the game would have ended. It's just about laughable or you can cry which ever one makes you feel better.

Snakebrown13: they wont stick up for us, or can't? If you think the answer is won't, then I'm interested to hear the existing and appropriate vehicle for protest they should use. As per my understanding, there is no existing way to appeal the outcome of a game.

Weird is the only way to describe our fortunes this season. It's over but will leave a scar for most of us and on the seniors. I hate it for them, especially. You have to like the forcast for next year. I know we lose some valuable players but new ones will emerge. We really need to get back to fast linebackers, imo. Are the two players who suffered the Achilles injuries coming back? I haven't heard them mentioned lately.

GO VOLS!!

Instead of dwelling on the past, I'm going to focus on the future state of our football program. The future of football in Knoxville is brighter than the orange on our jerseys.

A family full of officials and Mom who ran, booked, billed and paid the sports officials in our organization. :p

Some do, some will throw you under the bus albeit in private. Goode is out of line and if he was in Mom's org, he would be getting zippo assignments.

AshG: IMHO, won't - They CAN stand up and verbally defend the team against the situation; although it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things and will not reverse the situation. For them to give voice to an objection at least gives it more weight of credibility in the eyes of the MSM. By not objecting, they agree by default.

What I still want explained is, if they had made a pass on the play it would have been called back due to the penalty, so why was the spike allowed to stand and stop the clock when they had a penalty on the play for too many men on the field. This just doesn't add up, and nobody is addressing why the spike was allowed to stop the clock. The spike never happened and the clock ran out! WE WIN anyway you look at it.

You freely admit this? The state of officiating at all levels today is beyond atrocious. Been personally burned by too many incompetent 'officials' to mention.

The rule basically says he can't. Once he declares the game over, it's over, period. It seems like it always just us (and Kansas State) that gets screwed by the refs. I just can't believe it's happened twice this year. TWICE!!!

Well, look at it this way....We are 6-2 in games that we won.

IF the refs made the right call and held the ball, due to new offensive players running into the formation- it doesn't matter that lincon missed the PAT.

I would rather have had a delay of game penalty than run up the middle three straight and turn the ball over to NC with 30 seconds left to play in the fourth quarter...why didnt they tell bray to hold the ball and let the game clock beat the play clock rather than just punt it away?? Did anyone else think that was stupid? Did anyone else also disagree with taking a knee with 22 seconds left in the first half? Bray was hot then and we could have probably at least got a field goal out of 22 seconds before the half???

It's over and time to move on. We had multiple opportunities to win this game...missed field goal, allowing a long pass play, personal foul call, etc. I wouldn't have wanted to win this game like that anyway. It sucks, but it's a new year and time to move forward.

Keep your heads up. UT deserved to win that game. Unfortunantely, every team eventually gets hosed. I can remember all of the games we stiffed (i.e. F$U Swindle, UT 2004) but cannot remember the ones that went our way.

Here's a hint for one that went your way: Jabar Gaffney

I'm sure the officials also would have agreed that Thompson's hit on Jones should have been called a personal foul - late hit, as well... It is what it is... unfortunately

If they had thrown the ball down field incomplete the clock would have ran out because it would have use at least 1 second; game over.
If they throw a completed pass, time still runs out, play is wiped off; game over.
In this case they say he spiked it, stopping the clock, with 1 second left; game NOT over.

Wrong.

It was not a late hit, and the fact the official standing 6 feet away from the hit didn't call it speaks volumes compared to what the talking heads are claiming.

That was one call the officials actually got correct in the midst of their officiating meltdown.
