SEC football coaches ranked

I think this is more a reflection of the programs and not the particular coach. If you can separate the two. The last three have never coached in the SEC. And neither has Harsin. But Auburn is a better program at this point, at least on paper. So he gets a nod, or a hunch, as the reporter states.

How I would rank them:

1. Saban
2-5: I think you can argue Smart, Fisher, Mullen, and Orgeron in any order. I'd choose Fisher, Mullen, Smart, O
6: Harsin
7: Stoops
8. Lane
9. Leach
10. Drinkwitz
11. Heupel
12. Pittman
13. Lea
14. Beamer

This list is, in my mind, the top 3 and everybody else. Could that include Orgeron as the fourth? I'm not sold on him yet.

So the real question is, can Josh Heupel make a big enough splash in SEC football to get himself up there with the top three? Sure hoping so.
It won't happen in one year, though. If he climbs up to the 5-9 range by the end of 2021, that would be a pretty awesome first season.

Go Vols!

I’m sold on Stoops and not on Ed O. I would have Stoops 4th or 5th on this list. Ky doesn’t get many top ranked players so he wins with Xs & Os and development. Coach O didn’t do so well at Ole Miss and he is in his natural environment in talent rich LSU. Time will tell. Probably take Mullen over Kirby because he can change with the times and talent available, although the state of Ga consistently produces great running backs and he uses them. Fisher is clear #2 to me with several years of proven success. Kiffin is hard to rate because of his failure at USCw but what he did at Tenn with no OL and an unproven QB were pretty impressive. Leach has never been at a school where he gets top talent so he is kind of an unknown at this point. The rest will probably change in their ranking from year to year. Hoping CJH is in the top 5 in a few years.

There will be huge changes after a couple of years. He will be in the top 4-5 within 3-4 years.

I always have hope and dreams. It makes for a very pleasant life. Maybe you should try it sometime. You might be a better person if you did; at least a more content person. It has worked for me for 83 years.

The difference being that you are trying to base your prognostications of 3-4 years out on hopes and dreams that you've already established before Heupel has coached a single game at UT.

Didn't learn anything over the last decade plus did you?

I debated that one but they still did go 3-7 with wins over an incompetent HC (Pruitt) and the two MS teams. I very slightly lean JH over Pittman but I understand the opposing argument.
Pittman I think continues to rise in the rankings. Hiring good coordinators Is step one to be successful as a HC, he hit a HR on both. Expectations was zero wins in his first year, being competitive was considered a win. Not only winning 3 he shouldn’t have (*4 actually), he competed in all but 3 games.
*4 Arkansas/AU game that was a win for Arkansas.

Definitely written with a skewed perspective.

As we will probably finish 5th in the SEC East this season, the ranking sounds about right. As we get better (hopefully), his ranking should improve.

I would put Heupel at 9 followed by Leach at 10 and Drinkwitz at 11.

Auburn is the luckiest program by far I’ve ever seen. And I’m not talking big play for a TD luck or kids not getting penalties luck. I’m talking game-winning luck. We’ve seen it over and over whether it be a bounce of the ball, a call that wasn’t made and should have been, time given that shouldn’t have been, or something else entirely. I’ve never seen anything close to the luck that program has continuously enjoyed.
