SEC "Conference Loyalty"

I wish nothing but the worst every time Bama, UGA and Florida play. Whomever is playing these people, I'm hoping that they will win.

Shoot, I used to wish that Peyton Manning would get his leg broken when he played for the Colts, because it would have helped the Titans.

How does everyone feel about this. Something different to discuss Do you pull for certain other SEC teams when they are not playing UT? I used to, but every other fanbase in the conference has done nothing but kick us while we are down constantly the last ten years. Certain fans even seem to relish UT fans misery as much or more than their own team's success. There is no SEC Brotherhood to me. Maybe there used to be. They can all go to hell as far as I'm concerned. What are your thoughts?

We're no better. In our hey days we mocked and spewed hate at other SEC teams too. Even in our brief success under Butch some of our fans got snotty to other SEC fanbases. Worse was seeing some of our worst people going to OOC websites and spouting disdain and other snarkiness on THEIR website. Now the flip side. When we were beating up on Iowa, Northwestern, and Nebraska I saw some Florida (yeah that Florida), Bama, and Georgia fans talking about how Tennessee owned the BIG conference. Obviously a case, even if gurdgingly, of SEC pride.

Yeah I guess a lot of it is anecdotal. It's just whom you read and whom you are around. What I see is very one-sided mean spiritedness against UT. The internet/social media wasnt as prevalent or even non existent during UT's heyday, so I dont see how it could have been as pervasive.

and once we're good again, and it matters that the teams we've beaten need to look good the rest of way, i'll be back on board with the SEC chanting.

until then, screw all of you.
:)

Yep, when UT was on the 9 yr streak vs UGA, it was easy for a UT fan to pull for UGA to beat a Big 10 team in a bowl or a SEC west team in conference play. As a UGA fan, I wanted UT to lose games because it would make it easier for us to catch up if UT started slipping a bit.

exactly. i've no shame in admitting that. when we used to beat UGA and Bama regularly, yeah, i wanted ya'll to to great....especially for SOS purposes with the BCS.

Oh you'll see a lot of brotherhood of the SEC the next few weeks. 50+ leads and still passing the ball will become commonplace. Enjoy that giant sucking brotherhood sound. As for me and mine we pull for Tennessee.

If it's a popularity contest (and I agree that it is), then that is all the more reason to want SEC teams to win OOC matchups. The popularity contest is often determined by the reputation of the conference the team is in.

For example in 2004 an undefeated, SEC champ Auburn team was left out of the national title game. Why? In 2004 the SEC and Auburn didn't quite have the reputation it has today. Meanwhile USC was in the middle of a dynasty and had a Heisman winner, and Oklahoma was not far removed from the glory of a 2000 championship with the Big 12 probably being perceived as the better conference.

The reputation has changed today...can you imagine an undefeated SEC team being left out of the playoff, or the national title game if we still had the BCS?

As we like to kick around the what if scenarios, there is never going to come a time when all of the P5 conferences have an undefeated champion. It's not going to happen. If it comes down to give 1 loss teams that's where the popularity contest comes into play. The committee doesn't care about getting necessarily the 4 best teams. It's all about viewers. You talk about them keeping an SEC team out of the playoff. That will never happen as long as the champion is Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee. But now if we somehow ever get a 1 loss Kentucky or Mississippi State to win the SEC just watch the mental gymnastics they use to justify keeping them out. We all remember a few years ago when Baylor and TCU tied for the Big 12 championship with one loss and they both missed the playoff. That had more to do with who they were than strength of conference. If that had been Texas/OU you can pretty much guarantee one of them would've been in. But since it was TCU/Baylor they get into strength of schedule or the "eye test", whatever that's supposed to mean.

I guess most are too young to remember when the national media slobbered all over the Big 10, Notre Dame and the Pac 10 and considered the SEC a weaker conference. Before the BCS and playoff era the SEC teams would get shafted in the rankings on a regular basis.

The last time this really affected UT was when Peyton was screwed out of the Heisman by the love affair the media had for a showboating kick returner. Heck, even in 98, if there were 3 undefeated teams at the end of the year there would have been a good chance UT would have been left out of the championship.

But after 20 years of the SEC dominating the playoff picture and ESPN getting a network dedicated to the conference, the perception has changed.

I still try to root for the SEC with that ingrained conference pride but it's not like it used to be.

What if pulling for that SEC team helps UT win the East, or make the playoff?

Still dumb?

Well obvious there’s expections of course such as those. But. We get into bowl season and you cheer for the other SEC teams? It’s weird. You’re supposed to not like the other teams in your conference.

If there was a way for all 13 teams to go 0-12 that would be my goal. Too many years of Battered Vol Syndrome. We've been abused for much too long. I grew up loving college football and I can't even enjoy the game any more.

I used to pull for all the SEC schools when they didn’t play UT. Now, after years of ridicule from most of the fan bases, I don’t. I hate UGA and Florida with the fire of a thousand suns. When they play in Jacksonville every year I hope for a 0-0 tie. The other schools it really depends on who they are playing.

If it isnt UT I dont care.. 4 teams I want to lose EVERY time they step on the field are BAMA, UF, Ohio State and ND.. If I pulled for any other SEC school it would be Miss St
If we are going to lose a football game, I want to lose to a SEC team than any team outside the SEC. I never want ND, OSU, Clemson, Miami, USC, Michigan, Oregon, etc. to beat any SEC team.

I love the brotherhood of the SEC. Yes, even with Bama and Florida and Vandy. I like the pageantry, the traditions, the love-hate relationships all over the place. I like the Machiavellian intrigue that can occur among the teams vying for position. I guess I'd say yes, I am an SEC fan.

But I'm still first, last, foremost, and always a Volunteer fan.

I don’t like UGA, and I tolerate Bama.

That said, I’d rather they keep the SEC’s reputation going while UF, LSU, UT and others get their ship together.

I don’t want the Big 12, ACC or some other conference taking our second seat at the playoff table because my team currently sucks.

The only time I ever pulled for the gators in the 90s was 97 again FSU. We needed FSU to lose that game so we could move up in the AP poll and get in the Orange Bowl. I remember me and my dad had a rather animated discussion about it. I tried to explain to him that I wasn't pulling for the gators, but we needed an FSU loss. He wasn't having any of it. To him, being a UT fan meant 2 things. You always cheer for the Vols and you always cheer for whoever is playing against the gators and the tide. No matter what

Other than the Big Orange, I don't root for anyone from the SEC East.

The only SEC West teams I can tolerate are LSU and Auburn.
