SEC Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2015 | AthlonSports.com

I think Butch Jones and those guys have done a great job with the young talent, putting them in some positions to succeed but not overloading them. They stayed really, really simple.”

“Even though Mike Bajakian left (for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) right when they were starting to figure things out offensively, I know they feel really good about Josh Dobbs and the direction they’re going to go. Stylistically, I think they’ll probably be a lot like Auburn with Nick Marshall, a guy who can put pressure on the defense with the way he runs it.”

“Their wide receivers are big-time. They can run and they’re long.”

“Jalen Hurd, that dude is going to be a stud. They have a ton of skill coming back.”

“My question is can they run the football well enough outside of the quarterback? They had to overhaul the offensive line last year and they need some more consistency there to take the next step.”

“A.J. Johnson was their best defensive player in my opinion. He was really good and I don’t know if they can replace everything he did.”

“Cam Sutton is an excellent cornerback. He finds ways to make plays on the ball.”

“They’ve upgraded their talent level overall, but I just don’t know if they have a bunch of difference-makers on defense.”

“The next couple years, I think if they can keep some guys healthy and win a close game or two it wouldn’t surprise me to see them at nine wins.

In a couple years we might have 9 wins? That was a backhanded compliment if I ever saw one. - I'm positive that was Steve Spurrier.

Agreed. The last one was Spurrier.

I think the second-to-last one was Mason. Clueless as ever.

Third-from last (about Cam) was Malzahn.

Fourth-from-last (about AJ) was either Saban or Stoops.

Fifth-from-last (questioning running game) sounds like Pinkel.

Sixth-from-last (about Hurd) has the Bielema feel.

Seventh-from-last (about WR corps) could be Richt, or maybe Stoops.

The one at the top sounds like McElwain.

The second quote is the one I'm most curious about ... asked to give a comment on the Vols, this guy zeroes in on Bajakian's departure. Which SEC coach has worked with Bajakian in the past? That's probably who it is.

Agree with the Spurrier comment. Most of the comments were on the under-impressed side. I think that'll change as the year rolls on. AJ was great, but we've got talent all over the D and "difference-makers" on both sides of the ball.

Someone's going to be surprised this year.

These aren't necessarily head coaches. And I don't think the thing about nine wins was really that much of a dig, either. I didn't take it as "in a couple of years" we may have a 9 win season, more that we had the potential to be 9-win teams over the next couple of years.

9 wins in next couple of years sounds about right. Hope sooner but let's be realistic here.

I doubt a single head coach in the SEC bothered to comment to Athlon. I'm guessing these are the opinions of Special Teams Assistant Coaches and GAs. Their collective lack of knowledge about a lot of teams is glaring.

We should keep in mind when reading things like this, that even anonymously, opposing coaches will be careful to give us too much credit. For an SEC East coach to predict more than 9 wins for us would be to admit that we will probably beat them or have a shot at the SECCG and nobody wants to do that. They are competitors after all.. Though that quote is exactly how Steve speaks and he only gives compliments that are backhanded and smirky.

Realistic? Lol this is VN.

I love playing bama and the best teams every year, but having to do so is almost a sure loss. Here's the deal. We play a top 15 OOC team and Bama every single year. We are likely to lose one or both. Our chances at getting to those 9 wins is a little lower than a lot of teams because of it.

Fwiw, I think 8-4 is realistic for 2015 and with a favorable draw in a bowl (say VT or GT in the Peach?) we could end up with 9 wins. No reason to sell ourselves short either.

I think they're pretty much all head coaches. Maybe a coordinator or two standing in when a HC didn't want to play.

And yes, the lack of knowledge by a few of them is glaring, but not surprising. They don't spend the off-season looking hard at the other 13 teams in the SEC...they save that for the week or three leading up to that game.

Sounds like to me the SEC are taking the Vols seriously for the first time in a long time. After 9-10 wins this season, they are going to start feeling a little worried.

Would you take a 9 win season on average if it meant beating Bama and Florida periodically? Like beat them every other year? I would personally take beating Bama every year but still going 7-6. I despise that school

Bingo. SIDs of each school said this......trust me, offensive coaches know about Barnett, Maggitt and Sutton.

Agree it was ignorant so I'm thinking someone from the West who doesn't play UT and has no real reason to pay attention- Mullin? Miles?

Yeah, that's a possibility for sure. I was thinking that they'd get quotes mostly about teams the coaches would face this year, so focused my guesses mostly on them. But you could absolutely be right.

Personally relieved that this wasn't super hype. Our team has something to prove.

Any coach who doesn't have the cojones to identify himself should never be quoted.

And you can quote me on that.

Lol that sounds dead on. I think you've pegged them all correctly.
