SEC Channel UT-VT Replay Observations

Watching the replay of the BoB game on SEC network. This time, I am watching nothing but the offensive line. What is painfully obvious is when VT's DL stunts, they get into the backfield. Not once, not twice, but every time. How do we know if our OL is capable when they don't know how to handle a stunt? The O. Lineman who is in front of the stunt man is left with no one to block while the DL stunter goes clean into the backfield. This has happened every time they have done this thus far in the game and I am now watching early 4th quarter. Dobbs is crafty enough to get away most of the time, but the confusion of the OL regarding stunts is painful to watch. We almost need a fullback just to stand back there and protect Dobbs, or the runner. Or maybe a quick slant inside would overcome this. If anyone has a chance, watch the replay and just watch the offensive line. Make sure you are drinking something while you are doing it.

It's hard to believe that our offensive linemen are so dense that they can't communicate when a stunt occurs or be sufficiently aware to pick up a stunting lineman--are we're talking about experienced linemen. Pathetic.

It's almost like they zero in on their own little area of the line without looking up and getting a perspective of what is going on over the whole defensive line. Why can't the O Lineman with the stunter in front of him simply follow him over to the path he is taking. Or yelling something to another lineman, or something. I can see where a stunt can work some of the time, but not every time. You can bet Florida has its eyes all over this.

I agree with the OP that a full back would be nice to help in pass blocking.

spot on...if it keeps up definitely have to go to two-back backfield...can only throw so many quick slants...if not fixed Gators will kill us...:whistling:

That's because your center should be your leader and pointing out coverages and generally handling all communications and ours is just trying to get the ball snapped without falling over.

This is the basis of why most people on this site say Dobbs can't throw. No time equals short passes. The UT Demi-god Peyton himself would look like Ginger or the Worm Burner behind this makeshift OLine.

This is definitely a makeshift offensive line. The problem is this staff has had for years to build it.

I have been wanting to see more slants for years! But we will never see them in this offense. We believe in not going with what actually works but instead run the same exact play back to back times to opposite sides of the field. When we ran the swing play to Kamara to the left, I told my friend that I bet we run the exact same play to other side of the field. Wouldn't you know it, I'm a freaking psychic! Any receiver can run the slant and it's a simple throw for the QB. It's one of the best routes to run if you are having problems with pressure on the QB. This offense doesn't believe in attacking the middle of the field, except on obvious running downs where we run the same dive play that everyone has seen 1000 times. Maybe Debord really isn't going to open up the playbook until UF. I'm just glad we haven't lost a game because of it yet.

No Peyton would be able to coach up the OL and would audible into his own plays based on what he sees out of the defense. The problem is they don't truly trust Dobbs to throw the ball even though he has hit on 2 long pass plays in back to back games. All we need to do is get Malone in a one on one and let him work down the field.

That has some truth, but I wouldn't say that makes Dobbs anything but slightly above average as a passer.

This year so far, when given time Dobbs has been good. We had like one long ball all last year (Malone vs KY) that I could remember. He's got 2 in 2 games. Give him time and I think he'd do great things.

Not to mention he's not allowed to audible to a diff play, too many times he looks to sideline gets play D stacks box and we run right into it for no gain, too predictable

Re-watching the Va Tech game.

Rough first quarter all around but the D was on the field the entire quarter practically. Offense looked bad only because the O line literally could not block inside. (Changing the interior up was the smartest move Butch has made yet, since probably naming Dobbs the starting QB).

Start of the 2nd quarter was great timing! The fumble recovery was not just good luck, a lot of guys around the fumble flying around. Granted sometimes you need Lady Luck. It was the only "lucky" fumble that truly impacted the outcome of the game and it was a big one. Most of the other turnovers were from Va Tech trying to make plays (or not playing smart and our d being opportunistic).

I think the second scoring drive was the most impressive this season. 90 yard drive (not off a turnover lol) finished with that impressive touchdown to Malone. After that drive both offense and defense looked solid. It was the O line change right before that drive that made a huge difference. Defense also cleaned up some of the mistakes.

Also We were sharp on special teams all game especially with that recovery of a football that bounced off our player. Va Tech could have recovered it. Sutton played it smart by directing guys to the ball! Contrast that with Va Techs own muffed punt the returner never once motioned his guy away (also one of our guys actively shoved a Va Tech player into the the returners way - that is a forced fumble in my book coupled with a dumb mistake by the return man).

2nd quarter has been the best we've looked this season. Play like this all year, no one can stop us.

O line still needs to clean some stuff up but it has been day and night since making the change.

Next week if like to see vs a inferior opponent more consistency through the whole game on O. Also playing Ohio rather then Florida this week is good timing for our Defense who is without Kirkland. Hopefully this will give the defense enough to work out some kinks without him (who had a great game vs Tech).

Re-watching the game has given more confidence in this team, taking the emotion out of it and seeing that despite the Rocky start this team has a ton of potential.

Va Tech game it took 1 quarter

Come out vs Ohio balls to the walls and I'll be happy.

Florida we comin'!

I haven't watched it again but plan to. My first impression was that the OL handled stunts and blitzes better once they took Richmond out in favor of Jones and moved the other guys around.

Richmond doesn't appear to be ready mentally or physically. He looked confused at times. At other times, he just got manhandled.

That's really hard to say.

Going all the way back to Worley, Jones said that some plays that look like zone read options aren't. They're specifically blocked for the hand off with the QB being a decoy only.

If you are correct then Dobbs did misread several times. If you aren't.... then he should have been given a run option much more than he was.

Who was playing which positions after the OL change you reference?

We have heard since Mahoney has been here that he likes guys that can play mutiple positions... I would be happy with just 1

moved senior Dylan Wiesman from right guard to center, replacing junior Coleman Thomas. Sophomore Jack Jones replaced Wiesman at guard.
