I just checked the box scores in the Sunday paper and saw where we had 23,238 at Thompson-Boling to cheer on to victory a team that had lost three in a row (kudos to fellow Volnationers that went). This was second only to Kentucky's home attendance of 24,284.

In contrast, Florida, which in my opinion has an absolutely great team had only12,431 in their game vs. Ole Miss. Arkansas had 19,302 which is probably capacity and Bama had 15,316 which was respectable for them. Miss State had below 10,000 at their game.

My point is this; If Florida can only attract 12,000 fans to see one of college's best teams to come along in the last 25 years, what is to keep Donavan from packing his bags to go to a real basketball school? I know I would if I were in his shoes!

Don't be surprised if he doesn't stalk the sidelines in Lexington real soon.

The problem is that some of these smaller arenas or arenas that don't fill up as much as ours still make alot more noise than ours. Support is more than just showing up at the game.

Yeah you can't just point at numbers and say there isn't support. You have to look at capacity and percentages.

There were at least 2,000 open seats at Thompson Boling last night. The thing is just too big for us.

The Dean Dome has a capacity of 21,000; while Cameron Indoor Stadium doesn't even hold 10,000 and it is listed as the toughest place in college basketball to play.

So don't be so smug when talking about numbers, because 9,000 loud students are a lot better than the 23,000 people sitting on their hands in Knoxville.

The Dean Dome holds far more than that. Yesterday during the telecast on ESPN they said it was a sellout crowd of around 21,000.

I found this interesting:
Top 10 Largest NCAA Basketball Arenas
1 Carrier Dome 33,000 Syracuse
2 Thompson-Boling Arena 24,535 Tennessee
3 Rupp Arena 23,500 Kentucky
4 Marriott Center 22,700 BYU
5 Dean Smith Center 21,750 N. Carolina
6 MCI Center 20,674 Georgetown*
7 Continental Airlines Arena 20,049 Seton Hall
8 Savvis Center 20,000 Saint Louis
9 The Rose Garden 19,980 Portland St.*
10 RBC Center 19,722 N.C. State
*indicates part time home court
I knew TBA was big but I didn't know it was #2. Isn't the Carrier Dome Syracuse's Football Stadium too? Does that still count?

I mean its great if we've got the second biggest capacity but when they aren't loud, it just makes the place seem cavernous and not intimidating.

I had the priviledge of being at the TN/FL game at TBA last year and, believe me, it was LOUD. It was also the best basketball game I've ever personally witnessed.

I have never been to a UT basketball game that blew me away with the noise. It seemed like most people just sat down and clapped.

Yeah it was great, I was there too and rushed the court, but the 12,000 UF fans were all over Ole Miss yesterday but we weren't at all on USC. We had 11,000 more fans and were a lot less loud. It can't just be the biggest games of the season...

something that came to mind last night at the game... as the fans were spelling out V-O-L-S as loud as they could for the chance at a free t-shirt, it is very obvious that TBA can be loud - it just ISN'T most of the time! The architecture of some arenas are just better at making a few sound very loud. Take for instance, Memorial in Nashville... The low, angled ceilings direct alot of noise down to the court - where is should be. TBA is built as a multi-purpose arena... I hope the changes they make over the off-season takes sound-levels into account.

I think we are getting there. Those 23,000+ were paying fans, unlike some of the crowds in the past for the Lady Vols, where everyone with a last name that begin with a letter from A-Y gets in free. Think about it, that many fans show up to see a sorry South Carolina team vs a slumping UT team.

Does anyone remember the pitiful crowds that we had with Houston, O'neil, Green and Peterson as coaches. We absolutely must keep Pearl as our coach.

It did get quiet while Ole Miss was rallying. I kept hearing, "Are you kidding me?" over and over.

We all agree.
