I just wish people would be more realistic.
You mean we're adding Chuck Webb and Carl Pickens this season? Personnel additions are the reason for the improvement from '88 to '89. The schedule also dictated what happened in '88. If you flipped the schedule, UT would have won their first 5 and finished the season with 6 straight losses.(allvol @ Aug 4 said:In 1988, the Vols started 0-5 and were getting blown out by teams. Majors fired defensive coordinator Donohue and made a few more changes. The Vols finished the remainder of the schedule 5-1. The following season, 1989, the Vols finished 11-1... co-SEC Champions and ranked 5th in the final polls.
So, from a historical perspective, change happened overnight and continued through one off season.

Are you talking about the Washington State team that beat #1 UCLA the later in the season and 1988 ACC champion Duke? That UT team stunk, pure and simple. Given that neither Webb or Pickens were true freshmen, I'm not going to go into that portion of your post right now. There was one other key personnel move, now that I think about it. The graduation of Jeff Francis probably helped almost as much as the addition of Pickens and Webb. Ask Penn State how much difference true freshmen can make on offense. Their record in '05 compared to their performance in '04 answers that question.(allvol @ Aug 4 said:Adding Chuck Webb and Carl Pickens was a definite help. But as good as Webb was, Cobb was playing better (before he got kicked off the team). While splitting time at tailback, Cobb rushed for 616 yards in 5 games with 6 TDs and a healthy 6.8 yards-per-carry average. Even had a nice picture of him in SI with a caption reading that he Cobb was playing in your face football against Auburn. However, do you seriously think 2 true freshmen players can make a huge difference like going from 5-6 to 11-1.
Arian Foster did tie a record held by Webb by rushing for over 100 yards in his first five starts.
Regarding the schedule in '88, of the first 5 losses, they included unranked Duke and unranked Washington State. And only the Duke game were the Vols even close to winning... losing by 3 points. The coaching changes definately helped as the Vols defense gave up 28-31-34-38-52 points in the first 5 games. Make the changes and the Vols lose a tough game to #20 Alabama by a score of 20-28, just 1 game after getting pasted by unranked Washington State 24-52. The defense in the final 5 games gave up 25-7-12-24-7.

There were no losses that could be considered major upsets for the '88 Vols because they were pathetic.(Vol423 @ Aug 4 said:Yes. Duke was the ACC champ in 1988, but they still sucked. That was before Florida State joined the ACC, and the ACC was a MUCH weaker conference back then. Spurrier, as I'm sure you're aware, was the head coach at Duke and they threw the ball all over the field. That Duke team won games on nothing more than brilliant coaching by Spurrier. The talent level of the players on the team was poor. While UT wasn't a great team that year, it was still considered a major upset to lose to Duke, and it was a very embarassing loss.
