Season predictions . . . for every game

Yeah. I just see a demoralized UT sitting at 2-2 after the Marshall game headed off to play a highly motivated likely bowl team in Memphis with many of our own players looking ahead to UGA the following week. I guess I should add Memphis as a possible loss. Heck, we had to come from behind to beat them in 4th quarter last year in Knoxville.

OK, you've bottomed out....and it didn't take long...go home, pop in "decade of dominance" and feel better, even if only for a little while.... :ill_h4h:

'Billy's a good guy, doesn't mean to drag the party down.
He's just got those anticipation blues that sometimes overwhelm a fella.
His disposition will brighten after a solid performance against the bad news bears...

Better days are coming folks!!!!! :dance2:

I agree with you Rocky Rod, This seems more reasonable than most of the posts I have seen. I think in general the scores will be lower but could be wrong. I also hope the season is better than this but don't count on it.

I had to stop reading about halfway through the thread as it was both too sickening and too humorous to finish. I know everyone's got an agenda, but within the first page we have predictions for an undefeated National Title run and 6-6 with a BLOWOUT LOSS to USC.

Sure, I'll be at the BCS game should we make it, but to predict such coming off the worst season in memory, with a new assortment of assistant coaches, lots of rebuilding to do, and serious QB questions is nothing short of crazy.

We will NOT go 6-6. We will NOT get blown out by USC. No Vol fan can "predict" those misfortunes with a clear conscience.

Honestly, I think 10-2 or 9-3, one game out of the SECCG sounds about right. . . .and acceptable for this season. Anything less and I'll become an official member of the "Time For A Change Committee," anything more and I'll be "tickled orange."

I don't know if some of you are blind or just smoking Marion County Meth. TN was 5-6 last year, 5-6. They have been beaten by double digits to teams in the Top Ten like 9 out of the last 10 times. Cutcliff this , Cutliff that, when he was there the last time everybody complained about him, what has changed over 5 yrs. Eric Ainge has the happiest feet I've ever seen. This ain't 1998. When Coach Garner went to GA, and Coach Barry went to NC State, that's when TN started their descent. Garner recruited the talent to TN, Barry coached 'em. With a dominant O-line you can do anything. Cal, GA, Florida & LSU wins, maybe Bama. If TN loses the first game to Cal (which is very good, please get out of the South once in your lifetime) things could go bad again. Just an outside observation.

I can't really disagree with your observation that 5-6 teams generally do not bounce back into conference championship contenders the next year. We have no idea what to expect. Some, like myself, are expecting the worst and hoping for the best. Others are taking to heart the homer philosophy of all games are wins until proven otherwise on the field. Will we get the Ainge of 2004 or 2005? Will the recievers be able to hang on to a few more passes than last year? Will the O-line be any better after all we have heard about off season conditioning and slimming down for speed? Can Arian Foster produce yardage the way we all expected Riggs to last year? With a more experienced backfield and an allegedly reloaded D-line will this year's defense be better than last year's? Then there are the turnovers. So many questions to answer and it is not completely unreasonable to think that a lot of them will be answered in the Vols favor this year if half the stuff we are hearing from the coaching staff is true. Add to that the fact that our top division rivals have serious questions to answer on offense, QB for UGA and RB for UF, and things just get hazier. IMO the only teams we play this year who SHOULD beat UT on paper are Cal and LSU. If, somehow, those are our only losses this year we will be in Altanta.

As for the rest of it, there has been some legitimate debate about how many recruits Garner actually got us from the now mythic GA connection (I think it was only 4-5 total although Jamal, Cosey Coleman and Deion Grant were huge). Also, I think most of us agree that the O-line just got too big which is a coaching issue but it seems that Fulmer has finally faced the fact that the monster-sized hogs cannot keep up with SEC defensive speed and that is being addressed.

Verrrrrrrrrrrry good!

They have been beaten by double digits to teams in the Top Ten like 9 out of the last 10 times.

Here are the last 9 top 10 teams Tennessee has played and the outcome:

2005 -]With a dominant O-line you can do anything.

Kind of like Notre Dame last year producing only 3.6 yards per carry and still winning 9 games? Or ND in 2002 who carved out 3.4 ypc and won 10 games? Awesome, glad to know you're wrong again. Don't get me wrong, I feel OL play is the most important aspect in college football, but you can win tons of games without being dominant.

Cal, GA, Florida win

Funny, all 3 of these teams have major major offensive line questions. Contradictory on your behalf.

please get out of the South once in your lifetime

Funny you should mention something like this. Especially when Notre Dame was 6-5 in 2004, the season before going 9-2. You should also remember that Notre Dame went 5-6 in 2001, the season before they went 10-2. Maybe some Southern footballs fans don't pay attention to the entire national scope of things, but a ton of us do. There are hundreds of posters here who probably know more about ND football than you, considering your post. Am I saying Tennessee is going to be National Title contenders? No, but 10 or 11 wins is NOT impossible, but neither is 6. I think 10-2, 9-3 is right around where UT will be. But please, before you begin insulting our people, at least get your facts REMOTELY CLOSE.

just an outside observation.

No, it wasn't. You stated things as facts which were 100% incorrect. We like observations, we like opinions, but only when thought through and have some sort of factual foundation. And remember, Tennessee could have been 8-3 (or even 4-7) just as easily as we were 5-6. Kind of live how ND could have been 7-4 or even 11-0.

The end.

Here are the last 9 top 10 teams Tennessee has played and the outcome:

2005 - @ Notre Dame - 20 point loss (you got one!)
2005 - @ Alabama - 3 point loss
2005 - Georgia - 13 point loss (another!)
2005 - @ LSU - 3 point win
2005 - @ Florida - 9 point loss
2004 - Auburn - 10 point loss (another one, against the 2nd best team in the country that season)
2004 - @ Georgia - 5 point win
2004 - Auburn - 24 point loss (yeah, awful)
2004 - Florida - 2 point win
2003 - Miami - 4 point win

So, UT is 4-6 in their last 10 games against top 10 opponents, with 4 being double digits. Am I happy we're just 4-6? Hell no, but this proves you have no idea what you're talking about.

Oh, there's more?

California- 27 Tennessee-35 W
Tennessee comes out firing on all cylinders on O, but the D struggles to find an answer to Cal's offensive variation. Good game to open the season for Ainge (2 TDs, 1 INT) and Foster (25 carries for 125 yds, 3 TDs)

Air Force- 16 Tennessee-42 W
Air Force scores 2 quick TDs in the first before the VOLS D finally shows up to block an extra point and then SHUT EM DOWN! Meachem and Ainge connect for 2 TDs, Brett Smith also a TD, and Stanley Asumnu gets a TD late in the 4th. Crompton sees his first action of the season and looks good after Ainge is pulled late in the 3rd (Cut doesn't want him injured before UF) and Foster rushes for 2TDs and his 2nd 100+ yard performance.

Florida- 16 Tennessee-21 W
In a battle of wills in the rain, Foster carries the ball 37 times for 175 yds and 2 TDs. Florida settles for an early TD and then settles for FGs in the 2nd and 3rd. In the 4th, they take a 16-14 lead on another FG half way thru. Foster takes the ball 12 times for 55 yds and helps melt 5 minutes off the clock before Anderson scores over the top from 3 yds. to put the Vols on top. A late INT of Leak ends all hope of a comeback and Ainge and Hardesty runs the clock out with draws up the middle.

Marshall- 10 Tennessee- 27 W
Foster runs for 200 yds and 2 TDs. Anderson gets another from 3 yds out. Ainge throws for 200 yds and 1 TD. Marshall scores a TD late and recovers the onsides kick. Hits a big completion before settling for a FG and the Vols run out the clock.

Memphis- 10 Tennessee- 38 W
Ainge has his first 300 yd game of the season as Memphis stacks the line. Foster still manages to break 100 yds and score a TD. Ainge hooks up with Meachem, Swain, and Smith for TDs. Hardesty gets a TD on the Vols last series.

Georgia- 14 Tennessee- 17 W
Vols take out UGAs starting QB and force them to play Tereshinski for the first time since their opener. Defense and RBs carry the load for both teams. Foster 35 carries 105 yds, 1 TD. Ainge hooks up with Anderson on a PA swing pass to score with 2 minutes to go.

Alabama- 6 Tennessee- 21 W
Alabama scores six again, but this time it's not enough to beat the Vols. Ainge throws 2 TDs (Swain, Foster). Foster ruses for 110 yds on 20 carries. Hardesty scores a TD and rushes for 95 yds on 13 carries.

S. Carolina- 10 Tennessee - 13 W
Spurrier is coming up with zingers for the post game victory PC while watching his team lead the Vols again 10-6 with 5 minutes to go and driving for a score before a big hit from Rico McCoy knocks down Blake Mitchell forcing a fumble on the UT 35. The Vols recover and Fulmer tells Cut to call the Flea Flicker. Ainge throws it to a wide open Robert Meachem. The D intercepts Mitchell, Spurrier throws the visor, and Ainge kneels to end the game Fulmer then meets Spurrier at mid-field and proceeds to :moon2: and say "kiss my @$$ Steve!" Foster is held under 100 yds and without a TD for the first time all season.

LSU- 28 Tennessee- 27 L
This one comes down to the last minute. LSU drives the length of the field and delivers the pay back from last season. Ainge has a good day 227 yds, 2 TDs/1 INT, as does Foster 25 carries 107 yds 1 TD, but the Tigers O owns the D.

Arkansas- 14 Tennessee- 20 W
Tough game as rain makes it nearly impossible to throw. Ainge throws for 75 yds. Foster runs for 118yds, 1 TD, Hardesty for 92 yds and 1 TD. Anderson finishes the scoring with a 2 yd TD run with 10 minutes to go in the 4th.

Vanderbilt- 0 Tennessee- 54 W
Last year's W was embarassing. The Vols get payback as Fulmer runs up the score. Ainge throws for 452 yds and 5 TDs. Meachem has 2, Swain has 2, and Asumnu gets one in the 4th. Meachem hauls in 7 catches for 180 yds. Swain has 9 for 120. Foster runs wild and has 210 yds. 2 TDs rushing and 4 catches for 27 yds. Anderson has 5 catches for 75 yds (one for 52 yds and a TD). The D has 8 sacks, 2 INTs, and 2 fumble recoveries.

Kentucky- 14 Tennessee- 49 W
The Vols continue the annual dragging of UK up and down the field. Foster plays only the first half and has 200 yds rushing and 3 TDs. Hardesty rushes for 150 yds. and 2 TDs. Ainge throws for 2 more and 300 yds. The D adds an INT return for a TD.

Final Regular Season Record: 11-1

SEC Championship Tennessee 27 LSU 14 W
In a re-match, the Vols D figures out LSUs O and holds them to 1 TD. Ainge throws 1INT that is returned for a TD. The Vols continue to run the ball all over opponents. Ainge has 200 yds passing and 1 TD. Foster runs himself into contention for the Heisman(but doesnt win... SNUBBED a la Peyton Manning) with a 225 yd, 2 TD day.

Sugar Bowl Tennessee 33 Louisville 10 W
The Vols finish 3rd in the BCS and are obviously upset, but a nice win and Foster shows his dis-approval for not winning the Heisman another 200yd performance and 2 TDs. Ainge finishes up a solid season with 275 yds and 2 TDs.

Final Overall Record: 13-1.
All of Vol Nation is satisfied, as last year's debacle is firmly placed in history as a fluke, order is restored and Fulmer is back in good graces with everyone.

This may seem to be overly optimistic to some... Is it realisticand acheivable? yes, we've done it before (the last time Cut called the plays). I don't put it past Cheif and Cut to do as they always have and put a quality D and O on the field, with talent capable of GREAT things. It is the expectation of every Tennessee supporter that we go out, compete, and win the games we are supposed to win. This year, I firmly believe we're supposed to win most of them. I don't expect perfection, but I do expect as close to it as we can possibly get. I'll be happy with 8-4 or 9-3 for the regular season and a bowl victory, but I won't be satisfied until we're back in the upper eschelon of College Football. That is somewhere we really havent been the past 3 years. Like everyone else, I can't wait until the season starts, all the predictions are over, and IT'S FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!!!

GO VOLS!
that is a wonderful work of fiction....one of the best stories i've read in a while.

here's to hoping it turns in to Non Ficton by Early January.....

This is not criticism. Just observation. But, Foster is going to run for 100+ yards against the defenses of California, Georgia, Alambama and the then run up against the "stout" front 7 of South Carolina and he is going to be held under 100 for the first time all season? Not saying it couldnt happen, certainly possible. USC defense is not the teams strong suit.

A few things...

1. It's already been said, but the odds are more than stacked against us of getting 10 wins before the SEC title game. I think we can get a lot closer to said game, as others have noted... Georgia and Florida are both lacking at key positions, whereas we are not. In fact, I'd go so far as to say Auburn and LSU are the only two teams in the entire conference with at least serviceable enough talent to get into a BCS game.

2. But on the note of LSU... I think you guys are giving them way too much credit. Even the guys that have us getting 13 wins total on the season, the one loss seems to come from LSU. Why? The talent Saban left in the cabinet for Les Miles worked alright last season, but the seams are coming undone. Miles is just not a good coach, I see LSU exhibiting the same sort of apathy they played with most of last season.

3. And the game against Arkansas? Where is all the hype for this team coming from? They're not going to win their division, and it seems they're getting pumped over a good runningback and maybe Mitch Mustain? Who knows. If halfbacks made teams better by themselves, then the Detroit Lions would have been the team to beat in the 90's.
