Searching for a “Nico”

If you are critical of Nico and how he left. Wouldn't you feel the same about someone the Vols "poached" QB they bought?. Both QB's leaving for money and "themselves" both would be putting money ahead of character integrity realtionships and "promises"/ social contracts
Exactly! I was proud of CJH and our administration for taking a stand and I would personally rather roll with what we have than continue the cycle. I understand we need a 3rd QB on the roster. Getting a QB out of the portal that went there on his on accord searching for a better opportunity is very different than coaxing someone in to “Nicoing” his team.

Assuming we poach a starter from another school, how can our fan base rally behind him? I understand the circumstances would be different but the sentiment would be the same. We would be taking someone willing to leave their current team high and dry for a better situation for himself. I understand the whole “this is the current landscape” but it doesn’t excuse us looking like the biggest hypocrites in the world. The media had our backs on telling Nico to kick rocks. Watch how quickly that turns when we take another “Nico”. I think that are teed up and ready to swing and I can’t rightfully disagree.

Right or wrong, if we pull any decent starting QB away from a team right now just after Spring, the media will turn on us and make it a PR nightmare.
Thats crazy unless said QB left before his spring scrimmage game and before portal opened, unless said QB started to sit out a playoff game for leverage and unless said QB had a history of missing NIL autograph sessions leaving kids with empty auto books. If these don't align totally different situation and the media and you should know this if you follw UT football.

As Syracuse coach Fred Brown stated; players need to worry about making plays and getting better, and I'll worry about the coaching stuff such as recruiting and scheme. "When they start trying to do your job, you (they) got to go."

100%. Even if the Nico camp actually was standing on recruiting/scheme and not money (hardy har har!) - "you got to go" and take your hostage-holding, head coach usurping mentality with you.

I don't think Nico was getting $4M under any circumstance, but his camp inserting themselves into coaching and holding out on the O&W game, going radio silence....well, you just can't have it. As far as JH and DW were concerned, Nico was out on two counts, either of them enough by itself to divorce Nico.

There won't be any media backlash when we take a guy from the portal.

I don't think there are any starter in this portal. Only players looking for playing time. I would stick with what we have and get another qb as backup

I get that but my argument is this…if your girlfriend left you for another dude that knew she was in a relationship with you, would you go try to find a new girlfriend that was in a relationship or would you seek to find a single girl. I have no problem with us going and getting a qb that left his school without any involvement from us. Us poaching someone else’s starter is a different thing though
Apples and oranges.

We'll see

But I hope we get a dude who willingly went into the portal and then chooses us.

Because it sucks to pluck a guy a whole nother program is depending on

Cheer for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back of the jersey
It's getting harder to do though. I still do, but when the whole team is only a bunch of one-and-done mercenaries, I might not be able.
