I think if you just use simple logic, you can figure out who the next probable coach will be......
For example, here is my logic:

1. 1st tier coaches are not interested - Gruden, Cowher, Lovie Smith

2. 2nd tier coaches - Spurrier, Butch Davis, Leach

3. 3rd tier coaches - Kelly, Kiffin, Peterson, Patterson

So, if the "dream" or 1st tier coaches are a fantasy, and the 2nd tier coaches are either too old (Spurrier), too content with no pressure (Davis), or will engage their school in a bidding war against UT (Leach), and the result will cost us over 3 million a year.........then that leaves the 3rd tier............

The most likely are Kelly and Kiffin..........If you are comparing them, the safest coach with the most HC experience is Kelly........since Kiffin also went on an interview with Clemson, then he is not the guy, in all probability.........plus, Kelly would be the cheapest, and UT can get some of the money back that they paid to get rid of Fulmer........

So by deductive reasoning = Kelly is the new coach!! haha!!

If you have another sound logical answer, please share.....

Great logic - but I don't like the conclusion.

I would rather Hamilton bring Fulmer back with a new 25 year contract than hire Kelly.

I would rather hire George Quarles than Kelly - at least he runs a bigger program at Maryville than Kelly does at Cincy.

I would rather start watching soccer than hiring Kelly.

I would rather hire - God help me - Butch Davis than Kelly.

Seriously.

I prefer any of these options over a Kelly hire.

I don't care how "fiery" he is, nor how "well-respected" he is - if the University of Tennessee is hiring a new head coach from outside of the family in 31 years and we come back with the Cincy head coach, honestly, it's just time to go to the house.

The fact that he's even a seriously mentioned candidate is depressing enough.

Sorry, didn't mean to depress you, I'm just trying to reason this out, from the viewpoint of the UTAD.......We all know how they think by this point.....I'm almost 100% certain it will be between Leach, Kelly, and Kiffin......Leach will not budge for under 3 million, bc/ he will get a raise I believe......So that leaves Kelly and Kiffin......a coinflip.......If they go for recruiting, then it's Kiffin......If they go for HC experience they go for Kelly.......

Am I wrong here?? Please tell me if you think it'll be someone else.....

Yes this coaching search is getting the better of me. With all of the names that are being thrown around and those who claim they know who it is,there is one certainty; all of us will know in a few weeks. So if you are going crazy and getting impatient beyond the realm of sanity, I have a solution. Okay here it is, say it with me;

"Gooooooooos fra ba".

Repeat as needed.:)

Now that some of these guys are in the mix for the HC of my Vols I've been watching a few of their games. I've gotta say, Kelly looked entirely like a jerk on national television the other night. Even the commentators were noticing what a jerk he was being. The thought that crossed my mind was "perhaps he's stressed over a call from his agent?" I don't know, but I would rather show up to the dance alone that with a girl so ugly or hateful that I was ashamed to call her mine. If he's a jerk, someone else can have him.

First off, your post was great - and it does make sense. Nothing I said was intended to knock it.

Leach wants out of Lubbock, Texas. He will leave at the end of this season - unless Tech beats an offer by a considerable amount of money, and even then, I think he sees that he's taken the team as high as it can go, and he may still move on.

If he beats Oklahoma next Saturday - watch how quickly he becomes the top target for UT. They're watching him now, but want to be sold. Bob Stoops is well known and widely respected around here - and he's still considered a defensive guru. If Leach can beat him - with all that's on the line, in a hostile stadium - it'll instantly legitimize his candidacy, and you'll hear a lot less about how much he likes pirates, too.

If he loses to Oklahoma, the blue bloods at UT have a sigh of relief, and you likely never hear his name again.
Leach's interview - the one that matters - will be next week when the final gun sounds in Norman.

Great post, I just can't believe that we'd go the Kelly route - but your logic appears painfully sound.

Thanks.....I believe that if we all work together, then we will KNOW who it is likely to be, not who we WANT it to be. If that was the case, then it would be Gruden.

But assuming the Butch Davis declines UT's 3-3.5 million offer, then it's up to Leach, to decline a 2.5-3 million offer. However, If TT antes up to 2.5 million, then UT would be forced to go to 3.5 million level, which I don't think they will do....Then they are down to Kelly and Kiffin.....a coinflip......

If Hamy pulls out the COIN and goes BALZ out for Leach at 3.5 milllion, then even though it will be a contraversial move, it will involve excitment, something Hamy wants.........Question is, will Hamy really ante up like that at a conservative school for a weirdo coach???

My guess is - NO.........Do u think differently??

Seriously Seriously,

You really are being sarcastic with the option of bringing Fulmer back being on your list. Any breathing individual would be an upgrade from Fulmer and his cancerous staff. If the new coaches did nothing at all and let the players run things, we might be in better shape than continually moving backwards under Fulmer.

Also, what is wrong with Butch Davis? He's was my favorite from day one and seems to be the perfect fit for our team right now. He's proved that he can recruit. He's proved that he can make something with a little. He's proved that he can make a bottom dweller a conference title contender in a short period of time. He's proved that he can take over a program full of thugs and police records and instill discipline and character into its players. He's also proved that he can take over a program that was once great and restore them and get them back on track while working with fewer scholarships due to sanctions against team. See North Carolina on the first three of those and Miami on the last two.If Davis would have passed on the Browns coaching job, Miami would have won a National Championship under him and not Larry Coker. Butch built the team that Larry won a NC with. If it's his age that bothers you then look no further than Saban. He's about the same age. I'd really like to know why you don't like Butch as our next coach.

What on earth is so bad about Kelly that you would rather consider all of those options you spoke about than hire him as our next coach? He seems to be a hot, young coaching prospect that will wind up at some big school in the near future. He's done pretty well at Cincy, which is not really known for the pigskin. Believe me, he's not my first choice either but he seems like a better gamble than Gruden or Kiffin and looks way better than the options you spoke about. Let me know why you don't like this guy.If there is something that I've missed out on about Kelly, I'd like to know and will be open minded.

Yes, agreed......They will offer the stars and moon to Butch Davis, for obvious reasons, outside of the "dream" coaches, he's our #1 candidate.....But I think he'll say NO, bc/ he's already very rich, and very settled in NC, and under ZERO pressure there, but we'll see......

If that's the case, then UT goes after Leach......but I"m not convinced the UT alum will go for such a weirdo, in such a conservative climate like Knoxville......Pearl is outrageous, but well-mannered, and a good guy.

But Leach is genuinely bizarre, like an insane offensive genius.

If Leach is not the deal, then it's down to the 3rd tier......Can anyone really picture Leach in K-ville??
