SDS Asks: What is Napier Doing?

I missed where I mentioned Dooley, let alone compared him to Mullen.

Just pointed out what led to Mullen’s firing.
That’s the quote you entered the discussion over. Odd for you to argue in a vacuum.

I think I was the one that compared Mullen to Dooley, at least indirectly by saying that Napier inherited a disjointed, patch-work team missing fundamental talent at fundamental positions.

Regardless of the aptness of the comparison of the situations the fact is that Napier will have at least 2 more years to get us pointed in the right direction. One can argue based on NIL and portal that he ought to get two weeks, not two years.

The flip side of that is that, because of those same factors, we are likely going to see even more stratification between the haves and the have nots in college football in the next 5 to 10 years and teams like UT and Florida are right in the middle, stuck between ascending to "regularly competitive" on the one hand and descending to "SEC bottom dweller" on the other.

Honestly not sure which either of us will go.

There was a time when a UF football coach longed for an endorsement the most from one of two entities: Sonny's Bar BQ, or CJ's.

@Lawrence Wright knows what I'm talking about.

Hayes: What in the world is Billy Napier doing?

It’s a good look at all of the questionable decisions Sunbelt Billy has made. Predictions don’t mean much but I think Florida might be in for a Butch Jones level of hurt if this trend continues.

To be frank, I never thought much of the Napier higher so this mess hasn’t exactly been surprising but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy being on the other side of it for once.
Napier is a football coach and Butch isn't.

As much as people are down on Napier, I actually think he can be a good coach.

I would be more concerned about all the shenanigans going on with recruiting, though. The 'backing-out-of-the-NIL-deal' with that QB was a very bad look. And that was after they basically threw their previously committed QB under the bus, exaggerating what he did to cut him (he said the n-word while rapping along to a song --- stupid --- but no one seriously thinks he's a racist). All that stuff would worry me is I was a potential recruit to Florida.

Napier wasn't dealt a great hand considering Mullen decided recruiting wasn't all that important but he's the head coach now so it's on him to fix it. We don't give coaches very long leashes at UF so he either turns it around within the next couple years or we'll be looking for a new HC again. Next year is going to be rough considering we don't have a single QB on the roster that is SEC caliber.

He was always an odd choice anyway (Napier) since he really didn't have the "flash" I expected from Florida for their hire after the Mullen disaster.

Maybe he turns it around and I give him mad props for looking closer to home for recruits. But something went wrong with that team this last year. He definitely needs to instill a snap and clear mentality before next year.

I mean, losing to Vandy? C'mon Man!

I don't think it's all that big a mystery what went wrong in hindsight. The defense had barely any decent players and sucked all year (we can blame that 75% on Mullen), and Richardson ended up being even way more raw than people expected. I would be surprised if he ever learns to read an NFL defense. He also didn't have any weapons to throw to. In retrospect I don't even know how we beat Utah.

Butch could coach at the CINCY/Central MI level.
Napier could coach at the LA level.

Napier is 10x the football coach Butch turned out to be. While talent+coaching is most of the equation, there is an intangible factor that pushes teams to achieve more and play harder and beyond themselves at the SEC level.
Heupel turned out to have it. Can Napier accomplish that? Time will tell.

It remains to be seen if Nape is better than Butch...

Yeah, I think we better wait on that. He may be smarter than he looks, but he sure looks dumb. Time will tell.

One of their QBs was sharing kiddie porn. At least Florida cut him. Bammer brings a gun to a gun fight and gets Player of the Year.
