Scrubbing the Roster -- January 2016 Edition

Didn't Dillon Bates redshirt this past year?

I think Dillon's redshirt year was 2014.

EDIT: Yep, was 2014 (his first year in the program). Dillon tore his labrum after just 4 games. NCAA approved the medical redshirt. So this year, 2015, he was already a RS freshman, and played in all 13 games (mostly on Special Teams). Now he's going into his RS sophomore year, 2016.

Awesome! So how many can we sign this coming class?

Sorry, man, that is one thing I don't track, schollys vs walk-ons. I could guess at most of the scholarship players, but am clueless along the margins. Case in point: the discussion about Trevor Daniels, above.

Cool excellent work!

Not 100% sure, but by my count, we can sign 22 (21 if Zach Stewart enrolls).

This assumes Daniel stays on scholarship (sometimes walk-ons will receive a scholarship on a semester-by-semester basis). He was too important and impressive all year that I doubt they would not renew his.

Do we expect jancek to stay on or not?

I hope so. Hoping Butch told Jancek that, no matter how their parting went, he would take care of Zac. They've been family friends long enough that maybe the friendship, or at least trust, can survive the parting of ways.

Gleaned a lot of information from a scrub of the team roster this morning. Here it is, broken down by category:

20 Redshirts from 2015 Campaign -- After all the dust settled, we had 20 players redshirt the 2015 season:
-- 3 Medical: Andrew Butcher (DL), Rashaan Gaulden (DB), Vincent Perry (WR)
-- 8 Non-Medical Offense: Zac Jancek (QB), Venzell Boulware (OL), Drew Richmond (OL), Clay Keaton (OL), Joe Keeler (OL), Eli Wolf (TE), Will Jumper (TE), Michael Lacey (WR)
-- 4 Non-Medical Defense: Darrell Taylor (DL), Landon Knoll (LB), DaJour Maddox (LB), MaLeik Gatewood (DB)
-- 5 Non-Medical Special Teams: Tommy Townsend (P), Holden Foster (K), Laszlo Toser (K), Alex Jones (K), Riley Lovingood (LS)

8 New Additions to the roster so far (4 Early Entry, 4 walk-ons during or at end of 2015 season):
-- Jeff George (WR), RS Jr, JUCO transfer - EE
-- DJ Henderson (DB), Jr, JUCO transfer - EE
-- Alexis Johnson (DL), Jr, JUCO transfer - EE
-- Marquil Osborne (DB), Fr - EE
-- Parker Henry (DB), RS Soph, walk-on
-- Ben Bates (LB), RS Jr, walk-on
-- Elijah Medford (LS), RS Soph, walk-on
-- Thomas Orradre (WR), RS Soph, walk-on

Team 120 Stats as of right now:
-- Awaiting National Signing Day surge, Team 120 currently consists of 17 seniors, 34 Juniors, 27 Sophomores, and 19 Freshmen (all but 1 of them redshirts...the 1 true freshman is early entry Marquil Osborne (DB)
-- Just over half of present-day Team 120 have redshirted (53 of 97).
-- 41% of the team are from Tennessee; this is a drop of about 3% from Team 119.
-- North Carolina has surpassed Florida as the Vols' third-highest source of recruits. Tennessee and Georgia are still #1 and #2. At present, Team 120 has 8 North Carolinians, and only 5 Floridians.
-- There are no current Vols from these SEC states: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Missouri.
-- We presently have more team members from Ohio (4), Virginia (3) and California (3) than we do from SEC states Texas, Alabama, or South Carolina (2 from each).
-- Offensive position densities: current roster includes 17 offensive linemen, 6 tight ends, 14 wide receivers, 5 running backs, and 3 QBs. Dividing those by the highest routine number of each position on the field at a given time, that comes out to 3.4 OL per position requirement, 6 TEs per requirement, 4.7 WRs per need, 2.5 RBs per requirement, and 3 QBs per need. From that, one might conclude that RB is the position of greatest need offensively from NSD.
-- Defensive position densities: roster shows 15 defensive linemen (3.8 per position requirement), 13 linebackers (4.3 per need), and 15 defensive backs (3.0 per requirement). From that, DB seems the defensive position of greatest need for the upcoming NSD.
-- Special Teams densities: roster has 4 kickers, 2 punters, and 3 long snappers (no holders, but one might assume walk-on QB Zac Jancek might take that spot). Possibly look for a punter in the 2016 signing class....

2 Possible Errors in the on-line roster:
-- Roster lists walk-on Devin Williams (DB) as a RS Senior, though he was a RS Sophomore last fall
-- Roster lists walk-on Jaye Rochell (WR) as a RS Senior, though he was a RS Sophomore last fall

4 Shoes Still Expected to Drop:
-- Roster still lists Marquez North, though he is widely reported to have left the program, signed an agent, and put in his NFL draft packet.
-- As already posted elsewhere, Paul Bain not on current roster … admin error, or something else?
-- Will Zach Stewart join the team in the spring/summer?
-- And the biggest shoe of all, of course: national signing day, in about two weeks.

And that's it. Will update the Stats again once NSD is in the books and the official on-line roster updated.

Go Vols!

p.s. No position shifts yet -- Jauan Jennings and Jason Croom still listed at WR (not S or TE), etc. If any of those are destined to happen, will have to wait to see them at the Spring Camp roster update....

p.p.s. Thanks for the kind comments. :hi:

I know Ben Bates uncle. Ben practiced with scout team this past season but was never listed on the UT roster online. they have several kids like that each year..

I suspected something like this was happening, LWS, because you'll see walk-on players appear on the roster, stay on a few months, then disappear for a few months, then appear again. Figured there was some grey area at the fringes of the actual roster, for young men who just want to contribute however they can. Thanks for confirming this!

Yeah, I scratched my head for a long time until I talked with someone in sports information. There are always glitches in that roster. they don't spend enough time keeping it up.

You do an excellent job getting up with what they do out on there..

I found out similar issues with the participation report in games. They use students that work in the SI office to help track participation in games. Those jokers are talking and not paying attention half the game. Then with the duplicate numbers, its easy for them to say Hurd played and McKenzie didn't. They see one on Defense and look at chart which says its Hurd and he is already checked off. Real joke how they keep up with it.

I've called them on participation errors before

For a kicker to be a 5* he has to be able to nail a 100 yard field goal...Although, you could make the argument that Trevor Daniel played like a 5* this year. That dude was a game changer.

Great year. Those golf style drop shots against UGA and NU were works of art. He is a weapon.

We don't know each other but you did such great work I was wondering if I could slide a little bit my office work your way? I've been having trouble with my TPS reports.

JK....awesome breakdown.

Thanks for all that information. Now my question is, how many of those at each position are top quality? I know we have signed a lot of bodies over the last three years let's just hope a lot if them wasn't just to fill a roster spot but to contribute in a plus manner.

Butch generally doesn't bring in guys just to take up a roster spot.
