Scrimmage Stats 8/13

With Poole, Neal, Lane and Smith, we are loaded at RB. The freshmen need to learn the pass blocking responsibilities, but if they can handle that, they should be able to contribute this season. Going forward, Rajon may move to WR if Marlin and Tom produce in accordance with their potential. Combined with a young, large and athletic offensive line, Vols running game future is bright indeed.

The Vols are always at their best when they can threaten any and all teams with the running game first.

So unless I'm missing something, 17 of our 22 starters are likely to be freshman or sophmores with the 5that aren't being M Jackson (Sr), J Jackson (Jr), Lathers (Jr), Teague (Jr), Poole (Sr).

Of those 5, only 3 will likely depart after this season and only 2 will be significant losses.. Jackson and Jackson.

I'm getting excited about 2011 but I'm getting REALLY excited about 2012. We should be very VERY good.

Austin Johnson.

Don't forget Milton. He had a good day. It is really good to see him improve. It would be great if he could really get it together and get out on the field. With his size and speed he could be a great target. Especially when we get close to the end zone he and Hunter on each end going for the corner jump ball.

Maggitt looks like an all American freshman right now! I hope he keeps it up. His numbers are unreal today 5 TfL and 2 sacs. Our defense may surprise people this year. GBO

UT was a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals, with sophomore placekicker Michael Palardy responsible for four. Palardy displayed range, connecting on a 52-yarder. His 33-yard field goal wrapped up an impressive and lengthy drive that saw freshman tailback Marlin Lane break a 13-yard run and catch a 12-yard pass on third down. Bray also found Hunter for 18 yards on an earlier third down during that possession.

Palardy got better.

on the RB's

With Tennessee’s two-deep tailbacks Tauren Poole and Rajion Neal sidelined with minor injuries Saturday, Lane and Smith took advantage of their opportunities to shine. Applying different rushing styles, the duo provided a one-two punch that combined for 122 yards on 19 carries (6.4 YPC).

“Marlin (Lane) is a little more elusive kind of guy, change of direction,” Dooley said. “Tom is a little more of a hammer-knocker. He’s a physical guy. He came from a Wing-T offense. They just teach you in the Wing-T to run straight and you don’t even look up. You just run. Whoever hits you, you just go. We have to teach them that if there’s a defender there, you’re allowed to do a little (juke) and get on the edge. He hasn’t learned that yet, but he hits and he pushes forward.

“I think they’re going to complement each other very well. I’m going to tell you what they both have. They’re tough. And that’s a starting point at running back.”

What's the word on Prentiss Waggner? I figured he'd be somewhere in the starting lineup...or at least the immediate two-deep.

wow! very impressive work by Maggitt. Kid is going to be one hell of a LB for us.
Like seeing Palardy make a 52 yarder, and also covnerting on the closer FG's

I am a little concerned about Bray, but I will wait until the real games start to make a final judgement.
I am expecting big things from Justin Hunter this year!!!!!

Thought I caught where DD said he had a big play negated due to offensive interference. If true since penalties counted today that would be another stat that almost made it in and that he's playing aggressively.

Oh my bad, just remembered it was someone battling for that 3rd spot. I'm just glad new receivers and backs were getting more action today.

Practice man we talking about practice lol. Sorry I couldn't resist. I watching the video where they was talking to Bray and they ask him was it hard for him to get in the mind set because this was not real game. He said we treated this like it was a game today and the tempo was alot better. MO Is when game day comes everything going to be alright.

I saw every yard Tom Smith ran for in high school, so I know him fairly well. He is definitely a power back, but he can cut and juke, as well. He doesn't have flat-out great speed, but he rarely got caught from behind.

Tom has pretty good hands, but he played in a single-wing offense (not Wing-T as Dooley said), so there weren't a lot of chances to catch the ball. The head coach at Apopka believes as Woody Hayes did when it comes to passing the ball. But, Tom does have good hands. However, he'll definitely have to learn pass blocking. On the few pass plays that were called, he was a receiver out of the backfield on a screen or a wheel route. Tom even threw a handful of passes out of the single wing, but I would be surprised to see him throwing the ball from the TB slot when wearing the Big Orange.

From my perspective, Tom has a chance to be a solid back for the Vols. I am very happy to see him get a chance to run the ball in the scrimmage and doubly happy to see him be so productive.

wow palardy nice. Glad to hear the LBs looked good, we need some linebacker dominance again.

Nice to see the three obvious standouts from todays scrimmage are all from Florida.

Maggitt, T. Smith and Palardy not to mention Marlin. I sure their are more but nice to see these guys having success. Hopefully they will erase the legacy Nu'Keese left.

Nu'Keese who??

I'll take the bait.

What's the problem with offensive line? Its supposed to be our strength, but they can't put a hat on some freshman out of position long enough to keep him from wrecking havok in the backfield. Right now Alabama's prepping for a title run and we can't block a kid fresh out of high school with no SEC game experience.

The punting was awful, two highly rated punters and niether could average 40 yards a punt.

The third string quaterback was awful. 3 - 8.

The Jackson's, the two "best" defensive players showed nothing.

I can keep going if you want. Its two in the morning, and I can't sleep.

Yeah, but there's high percentage and there's 50%. He should be above the latter mark.

50% is relative...Is he completing 50% of dink and dunk 2 to 5 yard passes or is he completing 50% while attempting a high percentage of down field passes? History shows that Dooley isn't going to simply dink and dunk down the field with Bray. Coupled with the fact that Bray is a gunslinger, he isn't going to be a high percentage passer.

I think some fans have gotten so used to the dink and dunk style of play they can't fathom a good passing game where a QB is just above the 50% mark. Personally, I'd rather have big, explosive plays and so would Dooley. He's even said as much...

Per GVX, Dooley's post Saturday scrimmage comments: Derek Dooley says Tyler Bray showed signs of maturity GoVolsXtra

"We were a little off in the throwing game — we missed a lot of big plays, and we're going to try to be a big-play, explosive pass game."
