I think Faizon is going to be extremely good but it's very hard to be an SEC starter as a true freshman. Yes, I know, I know, there are examples but it's not the norm.

As for Joey, he lacked the crap excuse of a "missed medical redshirt" Chambliss used and had to go with "JUCO just shouldn't count" which was a harder row to hoe. If Chambliss had used the same "JUCO just shouldn't count" argument, I'll bet he loses too.

It's one thing for a judge to essentially overturn a single NCAA "denied medical redshirt" for one player but an entirely different thing for a judge to rule "JUCO shouldn't count" which would've opened the door for lots of players to ask for another year. I know Joey tried to frame his case as "just for this one player named Joey A" but there was no way his argument wasn't about JUCO not counting for any JUCO player.
Only they did it for Diego the year prior...

They also rememberwhat they want to remember. The playcalling was terrible on the 2 plays prior to the pick 6 and on that play. Who calls a play action pass with no legitimate receivers on the GL, when everyone knows you have to pass?
Oh no argument there. Bad playcall, compounded by a bad decision and a terrible result.

I stated Dak was Mr. Get Hurt and that he started every game. QB's get hurt but I bet more start and play the whole season than not, I haven't looked so I cold be wrongšŸ˜Ž
Nah for sure. This is a very unique situation. I hope whoever gets the job, holds onto it and excels. I also think if Faizon happens to start, GMac would bounce āœŒšŸ¾ especially as the older player. Idk if Faizon would leave if he was the backup.

I want what’s best for the team but I do think Faizon has more upside based on his physical traits and only being 17. If the competition is close, idk what Coach Heupel will do.

I’ve been more critical of Matthews than anyone. He had way more than 6 drops. I stopped counting at 10. You can always look it up in game summary of each game and then Talley.

With that said, Mike is beast at blocking and he’s tough. Big play waiting to happen with him. He loves Tennessee.

This is a big year for he and Staley. Hes had inconsistent hands since HS. That’s in the past now, and hopefully he can continue to raise his level of consistency. Nobody is perfect. And we all want Mike to maximize his talent.
- 90 yards in 2024
- 800 yards in 2025

You have to like that trajectory.
Sorry but Mike had 6 drops. Not more than 10. You like to count every pass that goes his direction as a drop if he doesn’t catch it because it serves your diatribe.

I'm trying to get back on the G-Mac track but I became concerned when UT/Heupel seemed to have serious interest in Leavitt and likely a discussion with Ty Simpson also.

When Heupel was flirting with other SEC starters while having G-Mac and Faizon at home, I'm nervous that his faith in them might be less than 100%. If you're 100% all in on your QBs you probably don't need to take a visit from the eventual LSU starting QB and you certainly don't need to extend that visit by a day.

I'm trying to get behind G-Mac but hearing that Faizon is pushing him, and Faizon is still just a HS QB at this point in the Spring, is not making it easy.
I think I may have to eat crow when I said GMac would be the day 1 starter and it was up to him to keep it.

Reading these notes and seeing Price and Hobbs saying GMac isn't running away with that it's pretty much even has about changed my mind to just starting Faizon and yes it's just a limited sampling but my thoughts are this and in no particular order but

1. I expected GMac to be far enough ahead at least during Spring practice seeing how he had 1 year in the system GMac would be the favored QB1 at least until Fall camp where I would think the gap would shrink but he would still have a slight edge and start but seeing how it's being said it's even now, by Fall Faizon may be clearly ahead. Figured Faizon would push GMac but to be even 😬

2. CJH is probably going to be run heavy seeing how neither QB has any real CFB playing experience, Faizon can hand off a ball just like GMac can and Faizon frame already looks good, so think about what it's going to be like at Fall camp. If either had to run, I think I rather have the guy thats more filled out.

3. If a 5* Freshman QB can come in and be even with a 5* QB that's had one year in the system by Spring practice then I go with the higher up side 5* Freshman and him getting that 1 yr playing time under his belt so year 2 he's even more ready to go. Yes that means GMac probably would leave but in this new era meh, do you really want to worry about a QB that let a freshman beat him out and has more upside, portal in a back up QB and keep moving forward.

If I'm Coach and it's close. I'm starting Faizon.

I think G-Mac has the advantage in fundamentals and mechanics from some of the early Spring practice notes. It's been commented that Faizon was being schooled on his footwork and getting set up to throw more efficiently. That's part of the difference between HS and SEC level coaching and expectations, I'm sure. That Faizon is polishing up quickly is a very good sign for his future.

I think we were going to be run heavy from the start unless we got a gunslinger from the portal. My hope is that we aren't so run heavy that our talented WRs look elsewhere next year when the portal opens. Or perhaps they will see that Faizon is going to be special in 2027.

G-Mac has strong Tennessee roots so hitting the portal would be hard but if he went home to Nashville, VN will turn on him in seconds. Sadly, he might fit well at Vandy but ewwwww.

I was at the scrimmage today.
Gmac would be the starter if the season started today. Brandon could catch him but made A LOT of freshman mistakes (holding ball too long, horrible pick, several ā€œsacksā€). Neither look like world beaters at this point but they have absolute cannons. Brandon will be a monster once he puts it all together.

WRs looked solid, didn’t get a ton of opportunities but boy are they big and athletic.

Bishop (looks like an tank) and dude from Tulane looked good though Bishop don’t get a lot of PT.

The defense absolutely dominated. Dline played like rampaging gorillas and blew up at least 30-40% of plays. Carter was out but linebackers looked okay. DBs seem much improved from last year and are absolutely faster.

On a bad note, the kicker looked terrible. And I mean terrible.

I have 2 major concerns from this:

1. Interior Oline struggles. Pendleton AND the Guards but especially Center struggled last year badly against teams with big, strong DTackles and it killed our offense. See: OK, Bama, somewhat Vandy and Bowlgame. The defense was able to blow up the Center of our Oline and win at the point of attack. Gilliam has been dominating them apparently this spring and now Robinson is too. We cant get exposed again in the trenches...and thats all over film from last year so opposing defenses WILL attack Pendleton and make us prove we fixed the issue from day 1.

2. The kicker. The freaking kicker man. Cost us 2 or 3 ballgames last year especially the UGA game. We HAVE to have reliable kicking this year or it will cost us ballgames again

Most of Staley’s drops were in the Mississippi State game, got his **** together after that, Mike Matthews had a critical drop in the Georgia game, critical touchdown drop in the Vandy game, and a touchdown drop in the bowl game. Staley was a player who would mess up but he would redeem himself when the time came, Matthews is a front runner, played amazing when we were winning but when the moment got too big (Georgia game) or we were losing (Vandy, Illinois) he messed up when we needed him

^^^ this is correct. Matthews had a great season and some big grabs. He dropped 3 or 4TDs last year though that he got hands on. Passes that you expect to be caught every time.
