Scrimmage 2 Notes (Spring 2026)

I was at the scrimmage today.
Gmac would be the starter if the season started today. Brandon could catch him but made A LOT of freshman mistakes (holding ball too long, horrible pick, several “sacks”). Neither look like world beaters at this point but they have absolute cannons. Brandon will be a monster once he puts it all together.

WRs looked solid, didn’t get a ton of opportunities but boy are they big and athletic.

Bishop (looks like an tank) and dude from Tulane looked good though Bishop don’t get a lot of PT.

The defense absolutely dominated. Dline played like rampaging gorillas and blew up at least 30-40% of plays. Carter was out but linebackers looked okay. DBs seem much improved from last year and are absolutely faster.

On a bad note, the kicker looked terrible. And I mean terrible.
Hopefully the kicker just had a bad day. He was pretty good at Louisville. All
Conference kicker.

We’ve heard this song before! I’m not saying… I’m just saying.

I heard Matthews was held out today.

On a side note, is there a player this fanbase hates more than Mike Matthews even though he’s a really good player? Bizarre.
He hasn't lived up to his hype. Too many critical drops and not enough tough catches made. It's not bizarre, it's a fan base with expectations of a guy that demanded more money.

Matthews had 6 drops last season per PFF. You know who else had 6 drops per PFF? Braylon Staley. They both had really good seasons last year.

I think you’ve got hate confused with distrust, all the drama he drew up last year just to have lots of drops in critical moments. I don’t trust him.

Most of Staley’s drops were in the Mississippi State game, got his **** together after that, Mike Matthews had a critical drop in the Georgia game, critical touchdown drop in the Vandy game, and a touchdown drop in the bowl game. Staley was a player who would mess up but he would redeem himself when the time came, Matthews is a front runner, played amazing when we were winning but when the moment got too big (Georgia game) or we were losing (Vandy, Illinois) he messed up when we needed him

Like you said Staley had a lot of drops in that one game but to my knowledge he wasn't making a big deal about money so people while upset aren't going to hold too much against him.

But when you demand money, people demand results when the game is on the line.

Last year we kept hearing defense was way ahead of the offense. We saw how that worked out (Banks fired), the offense carried us. Im going to wait before jumping to any conclusions. CJH is going to score points regardless of QB, if the defense is top half of the SEC we will have a good year.

We really need George to run away with the job. Doesn’t sound like he’s going to though
I starting to think I was wrong saying Brandon won't be the starter. If what was said is true in those screen caps I posted and watch this other video then GMac may still be the day1 starter but his leash is going to be very short

Not looking forward to seeing this offense but, I’m ready for this defense.. I’m fired up about them
I do understand, but when had our offense been absolutely awful? We have had some slow moments, but overall the offense has produced. If we have a solid defense, 1/3 of our offense from the past few years could be sufficient enough 🤞🏻

Like I have always said no one eats their own like Tennessee fans. Matthews needs to clean up the drops but he had a really good season last year. Great blocker as well. If he left, every school in the country would want him.

Every player on the roster asks for money after the season.

We need iron to sharpen iron. He needs to earn the job. And we also need Faizon to get better and learn from his mistakes. Kid is still 17. I couldn’t imagine figuring out this offense at 17 while missing a lot of his senior year of HS 🏈

Reality is, we’re going to see both guys this season and both are just going to have to manage the game and make 3-5 key throws a game. Also, need our run game to pop and take pressure off the QBs.

less than half of the 13 drops that Alabama's Ryan Williams had.
We notice the drops for our guys because we are watching them every week, but our drops weren't as bad as people make them seem.

Drops are like turnovers. We remember the ones that have the biggest impact. Let’s say Joey threw a pick on a Hail Mary against Bama at the end of the half…no big deal. But a goal line pick six…that changed the entire game.

A drop on first and 10 isn’t ideal but when Matthews dropped that slant on 3rd down against Vandy, that was a major turning point in the game.
