Scouting report on the ,"Cuse". Not very optimistic

I figure we all expect Syracuse to load the box early to take away our always productive running game, and see what our passing game is up to.

I would also expect on definite passing downs early in the game that they'll blitz--with the idea of forcing our receivers into their checkdown blitz routes, and planning from the start to jump the key route and get a turnover.
1) They've got nothing to lose by being aggressive, and
2) they'll have had all off-season to study and prepare for us.

Should be an exciting game and a worthy opponent!

Does his walker come with those split tennis balls on it...just askin'

Angeli gives a little concern at QB. Coming from ND and being in a big time program for a year or so, he likely learned a few things about the college game and Syracuse my just be the place for him to show out...don't overlook him.
Fran Brown comes from the Kirby / Saban tree and I can't think of a coach that has come from that tree that couldn't coach...that said, if it comes to a coaching decision / game management type game, I like our guy better, but make no mistake Brown can coach and will have his guys ready.

My friends who are UGA fans all have a saying..Fran Brown don’t **** around “……

They went 9-3 last year and beat Miami. We have a brand new QB (so do they). They won’t roll over. Take Syracuse and the points in the first half. We finish the game strong.

What they did last year is irrelevant. NONE of those players on offense are back and their defense was 78th allowing a robust 6.18 yards per play which was tied with Eastern Michigan.

Syracuse, like many other mid-tier Power 4 programs (looking at you, Pitt and Iowa and Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and West Virginia), can make some noise from time to time. They can have a good year. Once in a while, they get a special player (Jim Brown, Donovan McNabb) who bumps them into the upper tier as long as he's on campus. But short of That Guy on the roster, they're not gonna string multiple good years together into anything approaching a championship run. This is not gonna be another 10-win season for them. And it will start with an L.

I don't wanna overlook the Orangemen. But I don't wanna falsely inflate their risk, either. This should be a comfortable game for the lads wearing the RIGHT color orange, safely in hand by halftime or shortly after, and perhaps a 2 to 3 touchdown difference by the end.

Go Vols!
Your point is well taken but I went to the 66 Gator Bowl when we played them and they had TWO pretty good rbs; Floyd Little and Larry Csonka.:)

They have a guy at linebacker who is in his 8th year of college football. 8 years. Unbelievable

Can't help but wonder if Fran Brown's agent is keeping a close eye on the coaching situation at Auburn...
Can totally see it. Fran's one of the best recruiters in the country. Would hate to get in a recruiting battle with him, but I definitely think he’s the best bet for Barn at this point.

You do make some good points ... but "all off-season" which of our QBs have they been preparing for? 🤔

ESPN college football analyst Cole Cubelic was on the SEC Network on Tuesday during SEC Media Days, and the team of analysts on the broadcast were discussing Tennessee and their 2025 schedule. Cubelic preached caution about the opener for the Vols.

"Be careful," Cubelic said. "Be very careful. Steve Angeli, the quarterback at Notre Dame who came in the playoffs last year and looked exception in the Orange Bowl, is going to be the starting quarterback for the Orange, and he is a ballplayer. And that's a coach that just sat right there with Kirby Smart for a couple of years on his staff, Fran Brown, that knows how to get his young men ready to play."
Can't throw it if you're on your butt. We'll control the lines of scrimmage easily barring injuries in practice.

Yeah, I’m not scared of Cuse, but I think our fans are just assuming this is your typical awful Cuse team that will just roll over to anybody with a pulse. I’m not so sure about that. Fran Brown seems to have completely shifted the culture up there, and he looks like he’s a hell of a coach in his own right. But I think the big question is: how much of their success last year was McCord, and how much of it was Brown? I’m of the mind it was both, but who knows.

I think we win for sure, probably by 10+, but the first half is probably going to be pretty close imo. Feels to me like a game that we pull away from late.
Feels like ‘98.

We run the same offense. Our hot routes will stay the same, just that each QB will get plays called to his execution & comfort zone.

And surely Fran's staff knows by now that the best scouting report will be found in the postings on volnation.com ;)

I read where the early line was Tennessee -13. Shouldn't be a problem.........
I would think by now our fans would learn to not overlook anybody. Epecially with our ability to lose atleast 1 game a year that we have no business losing. It's not a matter of if, it's to who Untill proven otherwise. I'd feel much better if it was a home game. We have no clue what we have at QB yet, we could be minus a few secondary starters, our WR's are talented, but unproven, LB is far from a strength. We've got tons of questions and have no business assuming wins. That's bitten us in the ass atleast once every year under CJH. Hopefully that changes this year

Our last matchup with Syracuse was '01. That game had a slow start, if I remember. This game may resemble that one to some extent, with JH leaning on the running game often to help the new QB out.

Q. How excited is the team with playing a big game against Tennessee in the opener in Atlanta?

FRAN BROWN: We’re blessed to be able to play in such a prestigious venue against the Blue Blood of college football. They’ve been doing well for years. I’ve got a cousin that played there, all the way back to Reggie White. So we get a chance to go and play against Tennessee.

We’re just thankful to be able to play in that venue. We’re extremely happy to get a chance to go and play against Tennessee. They do a real good job. Our team is excited and thankful, but the main thing is the main thing. We’re trying to focus on, like, today. They’re back there, they want to focus on the skull session, right? And then they want to focus on the workout they’ll have today. So that way we can be ready for that big stage.

I mentioned something to a coach when he was leaving to go to another program. He felt like that was a big stage, a big program. I told him, stages are created by the people on them. Like, you put the work in, and it will come to you. Don’t ever run somewhere thinking I’m going to run to this stage now, this is where I belong at. I’m like, no, they’re created by the daily grind, the daily work. If it’s meant for you to go get what you’re supposed to get when you hit that spot, then just be ready for it.

Mental toughness; these dudes are trying to be who they are, and we’re just working. We’re just working daily. Tennessee is a good program, they have a good team, they play in the playoffs. We get a chance to go out and compete against them, we want to make sure how we’re supposed to look when you play against a team of that caliber because they usually blow everybody out in the beginning of the year and do those things. We’re just blessed to have an opportunity to play against them.

Q. Talking more about that game against Tennessee, you played Tennessee several times as a Georgia defensive back coach. How is it playing against Tennessee yet again in Atlanta, a place you played multiple times?

FRAN BROWN: It’s an honor. I’m thankful. I think Coach Heupel is one of the best coaches in college football. His offense does an amazing job. His defense is rolling. What happened at Georgia don’t have anything to do with Syracuse.

I’m just focused on my mental toughness. I’m going to be where my feet are. We’re locked on the day so we can be ready for that big stage. It’s a big venue, so we’ve got to make sure we’re ready when the time comes.
