Scott Frost or Dan Mullen??

Mullen would be our version of Les Miles. Really good but never good enough, and he wouldn’t have a roster of Saban players to win a NC with. He’d lose 2-3 games a year, but one would be to whoever FU hires.

if that's the case then you're saying he's basically going to do the same thing here that he did at MSU..."just good enough".

i think that's a little harsh, considering that he's brought MSU up to a place (regularly winning and going to bowls) that they haven't been.

i think if Mullen came here we'd get back to the point where our season would be defined by GA, FL and Bama....and really, that's how it should be.

i'd say if you're going 9-3 regularly, you're good enough to get to 10/11 wins a lot more regularly than we have over the last 10 years.....

so, while im out in front of the Scott Frost train....i really wouldn't be upset at all if we got Mullen. i think he's a much better coach than some are giving credit here. and that's fine...i get it. but the guy can develop a roster, he's a fantastic QB developer, and he knows what good football looks like too.

i'd sleep pretty easy with Frost or Mullen at the helm in other words. tifwiw.

Right now I would say Dan Mullen- he is a proven SEC coach and he coaches in the west. At least dif now the west is far more difficult to win in than the east.

I struggle to buy the narrative that Tennessee suddenly elevates his game. With the way television covers CFB today, is he really that disadvantaged at MSU? Is he really that disadvantaged in the West? Georgia is pretty strong right now and Florida isn’t going to stay down. The east may mean a win or two, but you still have to beat Alabama to win the conference.

well, Bama has won 4 national titles, LSU 1, played for another, Auburn 1, played for another. Ole Miss has been to places they haven't been in 40 years while he's been there, aTm went thru their up swing with Sumlin on Mullen's watch....

yeah, i think the west alone is enough to say "well done". :hi: MSU was a disaster when croom left, not competitive in any way shape or form.

mullen has built MSU in to what they are right now.

and again, i don't necessarily think that he should be considered for the HOF for it or anything.

but put him in the East, with his ability, and the resource and recruiting advantages UT has over MSU, and you get a guy that has MSU over achieving, relative to their history, and i think his floor is 9, 8 becomes a bad year again. the ceiling?? well.......not gonna lie, i don't know how high it is. i do think Frosts ceiling is higher.

If UT hired Mullen, l wouldn’t be heart broken, but I’d be skeptical. It’d be a “we’ll see” attitude. Would have to manage my expectations. If Jones was a 6 when he came on board, Mullen would be a 7 orc7.5.

i think skepticism is warranted for any candidate right now. how much skepticism....varies.

i think you're being kind to Butch with a 6 when hired.

for a week i thought we hired Butch Davis. i'd give him maybe a 4 based on what we knew at the time....skepticism was warranted the minute he inked his deal. and was a total wait and see.

i'd put mullen at an 8, and perception wise, i think just on that alone, would give TN a bump just because it would at least appear that we went out and got a guy that we actually wanted.

something we haven't been able to do the past couple times out.

Maybe I’m just jaded after 3 coaches but I’d prefer Mullen over Frost for 2 reasons. He’s already had success in the SEC West and he did it with Quite possibly the worst SEC spot.
Just scared to try another up and comer and may be proven totally wrong on Frost, but that’s just where I’m at after the lost decade.

Mullen is my Top Choice. He's a proven winner from the best division in the best conference in football. He would compete for SEC East every single year & I would love 10 win seasons as the "average year" in Knoxville.

Frost would be a 2nd or 3rd choice, i don't like his offense, but he's a winner.

I wouldn't touch Chip Kelly or Jon Gruden with a 10 foot pole. One if them has a show cause and the other one hasn't coached a lick in 10 years and isn't ready for grind of college. (Yes, i said it - i'm the 1 guy on VolNation who does not want Jon Gruden)

I'm not a Mullen guy, but when Butch came he was like a 3-4 for me......and compared to that Mullen would be at least an 8 prob a 9.

For me Chip, Patterson, Gruden (only from a name and staff he could bring) would be a 10

Frost would be a 9+

Mullen 8+

Anyone else prob 5 or lower (except for names like Petersen 10, Fuente 9+, Gundy 8+, .....which are prob less likely).

I’m a Pollyanna at heart. Until the guy UT hires proves unworthy, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. But, he may still suck.

thats fair. i think you look at a guy like James Franklin and see what he did at Vandy, and now what he's done at PSU...and you have to wonder, why couldn't he do something similar at UT?

his offense leads the country in scoring....just sayin'.

as for Kelly and Gruden, you have to find out about both. and Kelly's show cause really isn't that big a deal.

i don't think either will wind up here though.

Why do people say he's a proven winner? He has had 1 season with a winning SEC record.

When hired, butch and Dooley were both around a 4. Didnt know a thing about Dooley and all I knew about butch was he got smoked by dooley. Mullen is about 7 for me. Frost an 8. Kelly 10.

Word is "a private jet owned by the State of Nebraska has left the state and is headed for Orlando." Hope it's not over just yet; but I don't think anyone would be surprised if he ended up there.

I get Frost might go home to Nebraska, but I would still pursue. Also, if he picks us, he has probably already told NE no, so I don't worry about him leaving.

Frost-rumor:

John Currie flew to Cincinnati on October 7th to talk to Scott Frost. UCF playing Cincinnati. This is the week after the TN-Georgia game. I want to believe John Currie is ahead of the curve on this coaching change. He realizes he has to get this right.

Surely, Currie early in the process has gauged Gruden's interest.

Still think Tennessee is a much better job than Florida or Nebraska and believe Tennessee can offer more money.

Going out on a limb and think Currie surprises everyone and hires Scott Frost. Presser to name new coach November 27th.

Interesting? Serious vetting during Tennessee's bye week after Georgia game.

SCOTT FROST
According to a source, Tennessee AD John Currie attended UCF’s game at Cincinnati on October 7 to scout Frost. Tennessee’s bye week provided Currie the opportunity to travel. Other Knoxville outlets have reported the same.

Frost’s team won 51-23 that day and hasn’t lost yet this season. Central Florida is in line for a New Year’s Six bowl game primarily because of its offense – the team has scored more than 31 points in each game. Remember when Oregon hung a 59 spot on Florida State? Frost’s doing.

Clearly, he’s being linked to Nebraska and Florida’s job, too. While many have wondered what Currie’s been up to for the last month instead of making a coaching change, it appears he was quietly starting to look.
