I dont understand the scholarships situation that we are in I know we are way low on scholarship players but why cant we go after a bunch this recruiting cycle and fill those needs and make it to 84 or do half this year and half next year? How are we gonna catch up to the rest of the college football teams that have the 84 player teams.

There is a 25 scholarship/year limit. So it will take a couple years to get back up to the Max number of scholarship players. Just a rule. Believe it is a NCAA rule.

A lot depends on which class the recruit is considered part of. "Back" signing can increase the annual total but can also put pressure on future years. One way of doing it is happening now -- scholarships to walk-ons (even PWO).

We are currently at 79 scholarships including the 3 PWOs that were added a couple days ago and we only have 10 seniors on the roster that are leaving after this year.

So 79 (current scholarship players) - 10 (seniors) + 25 (2020 signees) = 94

So to get down to 85 for next Fall we have to lose an addition 9 players besides the 10 seniors to bring in a full class of 25 for the 2020 class.

He can. There are ways around the 25 limit.

They did. It hurts rebuilding teams. I think schools should get consideration for transfers and Medicals.
Say for example, you have two players transfer and one medically retire you should get a revised signing limit of 28. Grad transfers should also not count against the 25.

Trey Smith will probably leave early to enter the draft
Buchanan may have to medically retire
Most people believe at least 1 of the QBs will transfer
The other 6 are anybody's guess on who else may transfer due to lack of playing time.

Remember that we only need to be down to 85 by next Fall .. so most everyone could still go through Spring practice and choose to transfer after the Spring.

It is my understanding that Saban and others would sign huge freshman classes and would cut several of them off scholarships that did not develop as much as others their sophomore or junior years. The 25 scholarship was designed to stop this overstocking and then cutting players when they were halfway through their schooling.
